UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Choreographing Politics, Dancing Modernity: Ballet and Modern Dance in the Construction of Modern México (1919-1940) A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Culture and Performance by Jose Luis Reynoso 2012 © Copyright by Jose Luis Reynoso 2012 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Choreographing Politics, Dancing Modernity: Ballet and Modern Dance in the Construction of Modern México (1919-1940) by Jose Luis Reynoso Doctor of Philosophy in Culture and Performance University of California, Los Angeles, 2012 Professor Susan Leigh Foster, Chair In this dissertation, I analyze the pivotal role that ballet and modern dance played in the construction of modern México during the development of its post-revolutionary history and culture from 1919 to 1940. In this doctoral research, I approach dance as a means of knowledge production that contributes to shaping the cultural contexts in which individual and collective identities are produced while perpetuating systems of sociopolitical and economic domination and/or offering alternatives to restructure unequal power relations. As an organizing principle, this dissertation presupposes that dances always enact, explicitly and/or implicitly, sets of political assumptions that affect the bodies that participate by dancing or by watching dance. In other words, I examine how dance represents race, class, gender, and sexuality; how corporeal ii difference is arranged in space; what does the dance say about human relations; and how subjectivity is constructed through dance training and performing on stage. I also consider whose worldview, values and interests are enacted on stage and thereby normalized beyond the stage. -
Beginning Ballet History
Intermediate Ballet History Definition: (From History of the Dance in Art and Education by Richard Kraus and Sarah Chapman) “The term ‘ballet’ came to mean a form of theatrical storytelling through dance. The Encyclopedia of Diderot, published in France about 1772 says, ‘Ballet is action explained by a dance…specifically theatrical, spectacular, and done to be seen…” Characteristics of ballet include rotation or turnout, a lifted, high center of gravity, and little floor work, if any. Brief History: Ballet is the oldest form of western dance art that exists today. The strict rules and movement patterns of ballet are derived from the Italian court dances of the 15th and 16th centuries. The courts of Europe were swept with the creation of new musical forms. The creation of the new music insured new forms of entertainment beyond the traditional court dances, thus the rise of ballet in France. Historians credit the “Ballet Comique de la Reine” as the first ballet performed in 1581. It was an elaborate production depicting the celebration of the marriage between the mother queen, Catherine de Medici, and Henry II. In 1661, because of his tremendous love for dance, King Louis XIV, affectionately known as “The Sun King,” asked his ballet master to establish rules for the study of ballet. Some of what we recognize today as the positions of the feet and arms, as well as other movement patterns, are a result of those rules. At this time, King Louis XIV also began the Academie Royale de Danse as the first formal ballet school in one of the rooms of the Louvre. -

Kevin O'hare Director of the Royal Ballet
Kevin O’Hare Director of The Royal Ballet Approved, OK to use Kevin O’Hare was born in Yorkshire. Having started dancing at an early age, he trained at The Royal Ballet School from the age of 11 and, through an exchange programme, Royal Danish Ballet. On graduating he joined Sadler’s Wells Royal Ballet under the direction of Peter Wright and was promoted to Principal in 1990 at the same time as the company relocated to Birmingham, becoming Birmingham Royal Ballet. Performing across the UK and worldwide, he danced all the leading classical roles including Siegfried, Florimund, Albrecht and Romeo (in the first performance of Kenneth MacMillan’s new production of Romeo and Juliet for BRB), and created the role of Amynta in David Bintley’s full-length Sylvia. He also danced in major works by Ashton, Balanchine, Cranko, MacMillan, Van Manen, Tharp and Tudor. During his performing career he worked with Ashton, De Valois, MacMillan, Bintley and Wright, among others, as well as creating many roles. He has made guest appearances with companies all over the world, and produced many galas and choreographic evenings. He retired from dancing in 2000 to work with the RSC, training in company management. He returned to BRB as Company Manager in 2001 and joined The Royal Ballet as Company Manager in 2004. He was appointed Administrative Director in 2009 and Director in July 2012. Since then, in addition to presenting the Company’s heritage repertory, he has demonstrated his commitment to new work by commissioning many one-act and five full-length ballets. -

SMITH, AMY C., M.A. Deconstructing the Staged Death in 20Th and 21St Century Concert Dance: a Phenomenological Investigation of Choreographic Potentiality
SMITH, AMY C., M.A. Deconstructing the Staged Death in 20th and 21st Century Concert Dance: A Phenomenological Investigation of Choreographic Potentiality. (2014) Directed by Dr. Larry Lavender. 62 pp. This study investigates choreographic and performance decisions and philosophies of performing death onstage in four distinct concert dance works: Michel Fokine’s The Dying Swan, Vaslav Nijinsky’s The Rite of Spring (and other recreations), Angelin Preljocaj’s Blanche Neige, and Maureen Fleming’s Nude Descending Stairs. I analyze the imagistic and symbolic representations and embodiment of death presented in all of these works through personal observations as well as research of choreographic intention and critical and scholarly reviews. My experiences with these distinct choreographies unearth five perpetuating themes related to philosophical and psychological interpretations of death’s social and physical presence: the dramatic death; becoming and transformation with a focus on a shared performance experience; the life/death/rebirth cycle; sacrifice; and gendered portrayals of death. To gain further knowledge of these themes, I created my own performance of death in a piece titled Elementary Cycles, which directly involves choreographic ideas and symbols previously explored by other choreographers. This phenomenological approach to danced death not only gives me greater bodily knowledge of the five themes but also reveals the choreographic potentialities, or future choreographic possibilities of staging a dying body, imbedded in this study -
