See you after the holidays, in the new year! alqueriadelbasket.com 5 COACHES } lionel hollins } los angeles lakers ASSISTANT SPECIAL PLAYS for scoring a quick basket

ith the NBA’s 24 second rule, time is crucial and every team must have some high percentage plays in their offensive playbook to execute for a Wquick basket. Based on the rule, we know that the offensive player who starts the special play needs to get the ball as quickly as possible, so he can immedia- tely evaluate the situation, and create a play for himself or another team- mate. In the, NBA we use several FOR MORE offensive options in these plays THAN 30 YEARS from the pick and rolls, such as HE HAS BEEN high and middle screens, scre- en-the-screener, screens at the corners of the free-throw lane, ASSISTANT AND or the staggered screen, which HEAD COACH means two or three screens in a row.

Remember that you can fall in love with a special play, but you must always adapt this play to the skills of the players that you have on your roster. A special play, which has had great success for a winning coach, doesn’t guarantee success for your team that has different players. It also doesn’t mean that you can adopt it every , be- cause you may have different types of players from one season to the next. I personally prefer to call the majority of these plays during the flow of the game, but I will also let the call them.

I'll show you some of the special plays I adop- ted or were used by other NBA teams. Just re- member that every year you can face new special plays run by the NBA teams. I‘ll illustrate some plays run for all five court positions, from the point guard, to the . Of course, if a play is designated for a certain player and he can’t take the shot, then there must be a fall back option for another player or players to step up and score.

PREFACE This play can be adopted against any type of zone de- fense and used in different categories from professio- nal to youth teams. We can start with different sets, one with three perimeter and two inside players, and another one with four perimeter, and one inside player. But it is basic to adapt the offensive rules to the skills of our players.

MOTION 1 HE IS STARTING WITH A PASS Three perimeter and two inside players set. 1 NICKNAMED passes to 3, if open (above all, if 1 faces an even zone). Based on this pass, we will start THE ALCHEMIST the play “Motion 1”: 2 cuts in the lane, and 4 FOR APPROACHING gets to the high post (diagr. 1). Then 2 pops out, cutting shoulder to shoulder around 5, THE GAME IN A 3 passes to 1, then 3 fakes to cut in the lane, DIFFERENT WAY and goes on the opposite wing (diagr. 2). STARTING WITH A DRIBBLE If 1 cannot pass to 3, he will dribble toward 3 - a much faster way to begin the pla - and then 3 repla- ces 1, while 4 cuts to the high post position (diagr. 3). 1 has two passing options: to 4, or to swing the ball to 3 (diagr. 4).

BALL TO THE HIGH POST RULES We follow these rules, if the ball is passed to the high post 4, our the main target (diagr. 5). } The other post 5 cuts from box to box of the lane. } The wings, 1 and 2, slide to the deep corners. } 3 slides to the left or right side of the back of his defender X1. This situation can generate more advantages (diagr. 6): the 5’s cut forces X4 to follow the cut, and this opens the area in the corner for 1, who can receive from 4. If 1 cannot shoot right away, he could attack the close out of X2, who has slided down to guard him. 10 alqueriadelbasket.com 1 3 5

2 4 6 If 1 skips the ball to 3, and 3 to 2, with no inside player on the low post on 2’side, 4 slides down below the box, and 5 replaces him at the high post (diagr. 7). If 2 can pass to 5, we will follow the same rules.

BALL TO THE LOW POST RULES If the ball reaches the low post 4, we follow these rules (diagr. 8): } 5 cuts from the high post to the opposite low post spot. } 2 and 1 will set themselves above the free-throw line. 7 } The perimeter player in the middle, 3, faces his de- fender X1. } 2 passes to the low post 4. the ball at 1, the low post on the opposite side of the ball, If 4 drives to the baseline, 5 slides to the basket, 1 4, gets to the high post, and we start again our motion slides to the corner, and 3 replaces 1 on the wing offense (diagr. 11). If the ball is passed to 1, 3, start from a three - two set, with the aim of reaching or 2, the two inside players 4 and 5 wait for a second and a one-three-one set, the same of the “Motion 1”, but watch if the perimeter players can shot, attack the close with the ultimate goal to bring 4 outside the lane, with out, or split in the lane (diagr. 10). four players on the perimeter, with the second big man, NO OFFENSIVE SOLUTIONS ON THE CLOSE OUT RULE 5 away from the basket. The OVER 320 main goal is to pass to the high post 4, then we follow the rules of “Motion 1” of playing GAMES ON without the ball: 5 slides from box to box, 2 THE BENCH OF and 3 slide to the low corners, and 1 slides to the defender’s back, who is fronting him OBRADOIRO (diagr. 13).

4. TAKING ADVANTAGE OF DRIBBLE PENETRATION On dribble penetration the teammates without the ball must read the position of the ball handler, as well as all the defenders. Good reads can create a lot of scoring opportunities. When the defenders on the help side slide into an open stance on the dribble penetration, this increases the possibilities for the ball handler to pass the ball to his teammates in good scoring position.

Basic principles: }If the defender turns his head to look for the ball, the offensive player must move away, out of his field of vision.

}The players without the ball must rotate in from the opposite direction from the rota- tion of the defenders who help. (diagr. 31 to 40). 16 alqueriadelbasket.com 31 32 33

MIROTIC: SHINES IN ALL ASPECTS OF THE HIGH-LOW GAME

hile Nicola Mirotic had several options in the NBA, he chose a long-term contract in Europa. In his first months, he’s an important key to the successes Wof FC Barcelona. Especially in so-called “high-low situations” he’s extremely difficult to guard. In this video I break down all the aspects which makes it an unstoppable play for Mirotic. On the lowpost, is not an option for the defender to stay behind Mirotic. The cocktail of his size, mobility and shooting touch allows him to score easily with a fade-away, semi-hook or spin move. When the defense tries to deny the direct passing line to the ball, he’s very smart to seal-off the defender to open up another passing angle for a different teammate. His experience and basketball IQ make him also a lethal passer. Either from the lowpost or in feeding the “high-low pass” himself, keeping his cool and court vision under the defensive pressure. Unnecessary to add that you cannot give him any daylight behind the arc, making him one of the proto-types of a modern “stretch 4” that every coach would like to have on his roster.

Winning. When we put forth time and effort, we need something in return. It doesn’t always need to come back to us in terms of wins, but we must see and feel progress towards our goals. Additionally, in this profession if we aren’t demonstrating a level of progress, we will no longer be employed. Winning won’t occur without development and culture.

Sustained development and culture won’t happen without winning. It’s like Jim Collin’s “Fly Wheel” ex- ample from the book “Good to Great” (a book on busi- ness and companies, excellent for any type of job, editor’s note). Exceling in one category may slightly move the needle in favor of your organization’s suc- cess, but it won’t create long lasting sustained suc- cess. An organization needs all three categories op- erating together in harmony. As coaches, we need to create systems within each of these three catego- ries to organize ourselves and get everyone moving in the same direction together.
