3 CSI Softball works toward berth in NJCAA National Tournament behind strength of 7 sophomores With six returning hitters in the starting lineup, CSI head coach Nick Baumert expects the Golden Eagles to score a lot of runs this season. Add to that two very talented incoming pitchers and a returning pitcher and he believes this year’s team has a chance to make a run late in the season. “Hitting will definitely be our strength early in the year,” Baumert said. “But we are very excited about the po- tential of our incoming pitchers.” Leading the way at the plate will be sophomore Mikkel Griffin. The 5-6 second baseman .480 with 20 home runs as a freshman and earned All-American honors. Close behind her was shortstop Kelsey Bryant. Bryant earned second-team Region 18 honors by hitting .423 at the plate with 11 home runs. Other big swing- ing returners included DH Lyndi Miller (.337, 8 home runs) and third baseman Marina Groenewegen (.307, 11 doubles). Add to that returning speed kids Marie Williams (.335, 12 stolen bases) and Jessica Albertson (.278, 14 stolen bases) and the Golden Eagles begin the season with a potent arsenal. Albertson and Williams (first team Region 18 selection) will anchor the CSI outfield. They will be joined by Holly Ritz, Andrea Jorgensen and sophmore transfer Latieshia Webster. Webster hit five home runs last season for Colorado NW. “We are excited with the depth this season in the outfield,” Baumert said. “We will have quite a bit of speed but also have some outfielders with power.” The only infield spot without a returning starter was first base. Baumert said he expects freshman Nikki Brailsford to step in and contribute right away. Bryant, who played shortstop and pitched in 91 innings for CSI, will be asked to perform duty.

4 2011 Outlook “We expect to use Kelsey in a closer role in the circle for us,” Baumert said. “She has the best changeup of any pitcher we’ve had here at CSI and does a good job giving hitters a different look.” When Bryant is pitching, freshman TJ Surrage can step into play shortstop. Surrage also will be able to DH for CSI. Freshman Alyana Watson also gives Baumert a lot of versatility. The 5-4 infielder from Rathdrum can hit for power from the left side as well as slap. She is quick and could also see some time in the outfield. Miller, who caught some games last season for the Golden Eagles, will fill a similar role this season as a des- ignated hitter or catcher. Freshmen Kelsie Webster and Bailee Montgomery join CSI as catchers and Latieshia Webster also can catch. “We have four catchers that can swing it,” Baumert said. “It will give us quite a few options with the season being so long and grueling.” In the circle, Baumert will look to freshmen Jyl Eckstein and Jessi Duncan. Bryant will round out the pitching staff. “Jessi has a ton of potential and reminds me a lot of Generra when she first came to CSI, “Baumert said refer- ring to Generra Nielson, who was an All-American for the Golden Eagles last season. “Jyl has the ideal pitch- er’s body. Once she gains experience and realizes how good she can be, she could have a huge impact.” The Golden Eagles begin the season much like every team in the Scenic West Athletic Conference - with young pitching. The top teams in the league should be evenly matched early. “We believe we have a great shot at winning the region,” Baumert said. “Every team in the league graduated their experienced pitchers. We feel like we return the toughest hitting lineup.” Salt Lake CC, North Idaho, Southern Nevada and Snow College are always tough games. Colorado NW and Western Nevada should be improved over last season. “We will need to remember it is a marathon not a sprint,” Baumert said of the 48-game league schedule. “We will focus on taking one weekend series at a time and work toward our goal of returning to the national tourna- ment.”

5 Nick Baumert Head Coach 5th Season

Nick Baumert joined the Golden Eagles as the head softball coach in 2006. In the program’s first season, he earned 2007 Region 18 Coach of the Year. In 2008, Baumert led CSI to a Region 18 Championship and brought home a 7th-place finish at the NJCAA National Tournament. In 2009, the Golden Eagles placed second in the SWAC as well as the Region 18 Tournament, ending the season ranked 10th in the nation. 2010 mirrored 2009 as CSI placed second in the SWAC and Region 18 Tournament, finishing the year ranked 12th in the nation. During the first four seasons, the Golden Eagles have had five All- Americans, eight NFCA All-West selections, three NFCA All-Americans and nine NJCAA Academic All-Americans. The team has posted a high enough grade point average every year to reach Academic All-American team status. Prior to being hired to start a brand new program at CSI, Baumert coached high school softball. As the Twin Falls High School varsity coach for seven seasons, Baumert led the Bruins to a 159-46 record. He won the Region III title five times and placed fifth three times at the state tournament. Throughout his high school coaching career, he coached one high school All-American, six Region III Players of the Year and 29 Region III first team selections. He also helped 12 players continue their softball career at the college level. Baumert received coach of the year accolades five times for Region III, twice for the Times-News and seven times from the District IV coaches. Baumert was named Distinguished Softball Coach of the Year for Idaho in 2006. Baumert is married to Karen. They have two daughters, Katelynn and Kylie.

38 Southern Idaho Softball Camps

Twice a year, CSI Softball puts on a camp and brings in top notch clinicians. This winter the Golden Eagles welcomed U.S. Olympic third baseman Andrea Duran along with former U.S. National Team player Courtney Dale. Approximately 100 players from several states participated in the two-day camp at the CSI Expo Center. For more information on upcoming camps, visit www.csi.edu/athletics. Click on softball and select the camps link. As each camp is scheduled, new information will be updated.
