    8. Representation Steven A. Riess Cultural historians study the change of human civilization over time. They focus on people’s beliefs, rituals, ideas, identity, social norms, institutions, and materials, with particular attention to the meanings of that culture’s elements (Hutton 1981). Cultural historians before World War II focused on high culture, but thereafter, because of the influence of cultural anthropology, they began to study popular culture, that include every day experiences and artifacts that express mass values and attitudes. Since the late 1960s, scholars have studied sport’s interaction with high and low culture, and also sport as an independent element of culture with s symbolic acts, representation, and struggle over meaning of sport’s myths and realities. American cultural historians have relied heavily on anthropologist Clifford Geertz’s concept of “thick description,” a process of studying and contextualizing human behavior. This was modeled by his analysis of the cultural significance of Balinese cock fighting which he called “deep play, ” that illuminated the network of social relationships in that traditional society (Geertz 1973). This process encouraged historians to study the sporting world and individual sports as cultural texts. A new trend that soon followed was an emphasis on memory as a cultural historical category, followed by the “linguistic turn” in the 1980s that emphasized the importance of language, a perspective in far greater vogue in Europe than the US. Cultural scholars outside North America are far more reliant on theory, particularly the polyschematic analyses of Michel Foucault, along with advocates of the visual and audio turns. Culturally minded sport historians employ cultural analysis as a window through which to understand the broader society.

EXECUTIVE SUITES > 2 Policies and Procedures Access Policy To access the Executive Suites, you may enter at Gate 21⁄2 on Madison Street (north side) or Gate 61⁄2 on Adams Street (south side). An Executive Suite (Lower, Club or Penthouse Level) ticket is needed to access the suite level. Adjacent to these gates are lobbies with private Executive Suite elevators and stairs which will take Executive Suite Holders and their guests directly up to the Lower, Club and Penthouse Levels.

    2013 NSLNC FIRST ROUND: Line Change GENERAL FACTS FOR BOTH TEAMS Since television and sports collided in the 1950’s, the value of professional sports franchises, advertising revenue, and player salaries have continued to skyrocket. In the last 20 years, many teams, leagues, and collegiate conferences have decided to start their own networks to capitalize off the money generated from advertising dollars. Other sports entities have instead sold the rights to the broadcast of games to the highest bidder. Chicago is the third largest television region in the United States and has numerous networks that cover sports. WGN, Fox, NBC, CBS, ABC, and Comcast SportsNet Chicago, are among the local station affiliates televising the Blackhawks, Cubs, White Sox, Bears, and Bulls. The Parties WGN WGN television is owned by the Tribune Company, which owns Chicago’s largest newspaper, the Times-Tribune, and received the WGN call letters from the Tribune’s slogan, “World’s Greatest Newspaper.” The local WGN network began over-the-air broadcasting in 1948, and moved to cable television in 1978, rebranding itself as “the Superstation.” WGN is available through most cable and satellite providers, including DirecTV and Dish Network, but remains unavailable on Comcast, RCN, WOW!, and AT&T U-verse in the Chicagoland area. Following the 2013-2014 NHL season, the Blackhawks television contract with both WGN and Comcast SportsNet are set to expire. Blackhawks officials are currently negotiating the broadcasting rights with interested parties. Under the expiring WGN deal signed in 2008, WGN had the right to televise 50 regular season games during the course of the deal that are not being televised nationally on either NBC or the NBC Sports Network.

Crucially, and especially for scholars of the contemporary era, it has also granted access to a rich catalogue of sources. Exemplary of such work is Bruce Kuklick’s graceful account of Philadelphia’s Shibe Park, as much a ‘story of urban America’ as one of baseball.1 A flush of recent books have offered similar perspectives, including Sean Dinces’ Bulls Markets, which focuses on the United Center, a multipurpose arena that opened in 1994 on the western flank of Chicago’s downtown.
