Of those that have been assessed on the IUCN Red List, 63% are considered threatened, and 10% are critically endangered, with ca. 42% of all known turtle species threatened. Without directed strategic conservation planning, a significant portion of turtle diversity could be lost over the next century. Toward that conservation effort, we compiled museum and literature occurrence records for all of the world’s tortoises and freshwater turtle species to determine their distributions and identify priority regions for conservation. -

Cotinga 22 A Brazilian Merganser Mergus octosetaceus nest in a rock crevice, with reproductive notes Ivana Reis Lamas and Jean Pierre Santos Cotinga 22 (2004): 38–41 Um ninho de pato-mergulhão Mergus octosetaceus foi encontrado em fenda de paredão rochoso no Parque Nacional da Serra da Canastra, estado de Minas Gerais, Brasil. Cerca de 20 dias após sua descoberta, o ninho foi visitado para medição e pesagem dos ovos e acompanhamento do comporta- mento parental. Nesta ocasião, os sete ovos estavam muito frios e a fêmea não foi localizada. A presença do macho chamando por ela toda manhã nos faz acreditar que ela possa ter morrido, e não abandonado o ninho. Até o presente, havia registro de apenas um ninho desta espécie, encontrado em cavidade de árvore na mata ciliar em Misiones, Argentina, em 1956. Sendo o único registro de ninho para a espécie, acreditava-se que o pato-mergulhão fosse dependente de mata ciliar com árvores de grande porte para sua reprodução. Natural History and Conservation of Brazilian Merganser Mergus Octosetaceus at Serra Da Canastra National Park, Minas Gerais, Brazil

BirdLife International 2001 Natural history and conservation of Brazilian Merganser Mergus octosetaceus at Serra da Canastra National Park, Minas Gerais, Brazil LUI´SFA´ BIO SILVEIRA and WOLF DIETER BARTMANN Summary Brazilian Merganser Mergus octosetaceus is considered to be one of the rarest and most threatened species in the Neotropical region, yet little is known about its distribution and life-history. We studied the population of Brazilian Merganser in and around Serra da Canastra National Park(SCNP) in Minas Gerais, Brazil, during 1996, with additional observations from 1997 to 2000. In this paper we report the sighting of previously undiscovered pairs and present some new behavioural data, including a description of calls performed by males and females, feeding behaviour, home ranges, parental care and population density. We also describe a previously unreported plumage of the young. A total of 39 individuals were recorded, comprising 12 adults (six pairs) and 27 young. Brood size ranged from two to four (mean 2.7), being smaller than in other Mergus spp. (e.g. Goosander Mergus merganser). Two pairs were located within the SCNP, and four on unprotected stretches of river outside. Home range was large compared with other Mergus spp., each pair using on average 9 km of river. Range size was thought to be related to the availability of suitable nesting and feeding sites. SCNP and its environs contain very little mature gallery forest with trees large enough to provide nest sites (most having been selectively logged in the past). There is also competition for nest sites with other birds and mammals. -

A landscape detective is defined as a species that helps determine how to manage landscapes and to design and manage protected area networks. Life history and behavioural features of jaguar make them potentially suitable as landscape species. The main aim of this study is to use the jaguar as a landscape detective to develop a network of core protected areas for the Upper Paraná Region, which lies in the highly threatened Atlantic Forest of Brazil. Information was collected on jaguar density and home range, which was combined with habitat requirements of the species and GIS-generated maps of land cover to develop a map of habitat suitability. This map was used to understand the spatial structure of the jaguar metapopulation, identifying habitat patches of high suitability where jaguar populations exist and are likely to survive over the long-term. Camera trapping and capture-recapture models were used to derive jaguar population size in Morro do Diabo State Park (MDSP). -

E-mail: [email protected] Dedicated to the late Janet Kear, a friend and colleague from afar, whose lifetime work enriched our knowledge and enjoyment of the world’s waterfowl. Abstract The last population of the merganser Mergus australis persisted at Auckland Islands in New Zealand’s Subantarctic until its extermination by specimen collectors in 1902. It is now represented by four duckling specimens, 23 skins of immatures and adults, three skeletons, and a partial cadaver stored in 11 museums. It was the smallest known Mergus, the males weighing c. 660 g and showing little plumage dimorphism from the smaller (c. 530 g) females. Only five published accounts report first-hand observations of its ecology, breeding or distribution. Most likely it occurred as year- round territorial pairs in the larger streams and along the coastal edge at the heads of Auckland Island’s eastern inlets and in Carnley Harbour and fed on both marine and fresh water foods. Its population probably never exceeded 20–30 pairs. The scant records suggest it had a typical summer breeding season. Although its keel area and wing skeleton were reduced relative to its sternum length it was well capable of flapping flight. Key words: Auckland Islands, Auckland Islands Merganser, Mergus australis. This paper is the fi rst of a series on the birds of the state of Tocantins, Brazil. We relate the results of rapid surveys in three areas in southeastern Tocantins (Palmeiras River valley, Tocantins-Paranã interfl uvium and Aurora do Tocantins) including cerrado, riparian habitats, seasonal forests and dry forests. A total of 308 species were recorded, with most species in Palmeiras River valley. Threatened species, including Penelope ochrogaster, Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus and Geositta poeciloptera, plus noteworthy records such as Phyllomyias reiseri are discussed. We emphasize the need to conserve signifi cant areas of dry forests, a special habitat harboring endemic or near-endemic species such as Pyrrhura pfrimeri and Knipolegus franciscanus. Some introduced species overcome environmental barriers and establish populations beyond the point of introduction, being therefore designated as invasive (Richardson et al. 2000). Biological invasions are one of the major threats to biological diversity and to human well‐being (Vilà and Hulme 2017) and considered one of the main drivers of global environmental change in the Anthropocene (Steffen et al. 2011; Capinha et al. 2015). Invasive alien species cause negative environmental impacts in natural ecosystems, with consequences to the conservation of biodiversity and human livelihoods in Brazil (Leão et al. 2011; Souza et al. 2018).
