Otahuhu College Newsletter

Friday 22 June 2018

From our Principal Today we begin three days of Assessments across the school. Year 9 and 10 students have 2‐hour Exams in their core subjects and Senior students a combination of Exams, Workshops and/or Assessments. Sitting school Exams as a Year 9 and 10 student allows students to begin to develop successful routines around setting goals, exam preparation, exam behaviour and self‐review. These routines can then be refined to improve student performance in externals when they reach the Senior school. It has been great to walk around the school this week and see students engaging in the goal setting and preparation phase with all of their teachers! Good luck to all concerned!

Over the next two weeks we will be promoting two exciting new events on the school Calendar. Firstly, on Thursday 5th July we have a University Evening here at the College where students and families can learn about the different programs available across Universities in . Secondly, during the school holidays, we have a University Week where students can experience what it is like to be in a lecture theatre here at school. All Year 11, 12 & 13 students would benefit greatly from attending these events.

It was with immense pride that we found out on Friday last week that Ms. Cornforth (HOD Science) has been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship. This scholarship allows highly accomplished New Zealand Secondary school teachers to participate in intensive professional development in the United States of America. Ms. Cornforth (middle of the back row) headed down to the Beehive in Wellington earlier this week to receive her award. The last College recipient was Mr. Owen Boscawen whom was Principal of the College from 1972‐1985! Well done Ms. Cornforth, well deserved!

Take a look of this clip from 1939 of an Sports Day! Times have definitely changed! https://ngataonga.org.nz/collections/catalogue/catalogue‐item?record_id=65898

Enjoy the weekend!

Kia Tamatane!

Mr. Roberts (Acting Principal).

Arts and Culture News MUSIC DEPARTMENT

The past two weeks have been eventful for the music department and we are very proud of our students achievements. On Friday 15 June, we had our Doubt it band (Paul Tautiaga, Barry Lemalu and Isaac Puna) featuring Bellatina Ekeroma and Basimi Kafoa on vocals, perform at the Rockquest Regional Finals at Auckland Girls Grammar against 13 other schools. We are honoured to have won the Best Vocals award. Then on Saturday 16 June, we had the heats for Tagata Beats, also held at Auckland Girls. Our Doubt it band featuring Demian Nemoa and Isaac Uelese on rap vocals performed their original piece entitled, 'Chip‐ins' which got them through to the Regional Finals which is on Saturday 23 July, again at Auckland Girls Grammar.

We have also started our rehearsals for the giant Otahuhu Music Festival featuring approximately 140 choir students from Otahuhu Intermediate, Otahuhu Primary, Panama Road, Fairburn Primary and St Joseph's school. Our band members lead by Mr Tapueluelu are our Doubt it band Paul Tautiaga, Barry Lemalu‐Nofoaiga and Isaac Puna and our conductor is Ms Harford. This event will take place in Week 10, Wednesday 4 July, 7pm at the Otahuhu College School Hall. Tickets can only be purchased from each of the Primary schools as there are no door sales.

The music department has also revived short lunchtime concerts, starting today. These will be every 2 or 3 weeks and feature 3 to 4 items each time from our music students at all year levels. For now, they will be a small gathering in S2, Mr Tapueluelu's room. Today we saw the talents of Y13 Latu Savelio performing, 'Budapest' on the trombone accompanied by Paul, Isaac, Conrad and Barry.
