Subway Flooding Is Not Only the MTA’s Problem By Jose Martinez THE CITY Even on a dry day, the MTA says it pumps 14 million gallons of water out of subway stations. But on Thursday, as a month’s worth of rain deluged the city inside of two hours, the vulner- ability of the subway went on full display in vid- eos of commuters wading waist-deep into pool- like stations. The garbage we schlepped was in steel cans. I don’t know why, but unlike today, when there are plastic rolling racks for the plastic bins, we dragged the cans to the curb, often scarring the driveway and cement along the way. Watching the garbage men was awe-inspiring. They’d hoist that can, carry it to the back of the garbage truck, then dump and bounce. The bounce was the smacking of the can against the lip of the crater into which the garbage went so they weren’t giving you back the same garbage you gave them. Not surprisingly, there were garbage strikes. Cans lined the streets in all the boroughs. The strikes were usually in hot weather, so it wasn’t long before the stench pervaded every nook and cranny of life. This was what usually brought a solution to the strike. And that was the sum total of it. Like robots on a certain day, we did our gar- bage routine and were met by people who took it away. Hosted by Queens Bully in Forest Hills, 718 Day — named in an homage to the local area code — will feature a day of live music, food and give- aways from businesses across the borough. “We’ve done a lot of charity work [with Co- rona-based sneaker shop All the Right] during COVID so we were thinking of why there isn’t any day to celebrate the borough of Queens,” said co-owner Rohan Aggarwal. “We decided to pull together our resources and network to hold an event to celebrate with… everything local.” “We have a lot of preparations underway,” he added. ”There’s a lot of people who have shifted away who are looking forward to it, like those who spent their childhoods here and maybe moved away are purchasing tickets.” Other participants include Queensboro FC, Blend, QNS Service, Queens Finest, Officially Threaded and Etto Espresso Bar. Tickets cost $10 and attendees will receive two $5 vouchers to use at the booths from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday. Beginning at Hover Manton Park, Assembly- member Daniel Rosental, members of Communi- ty Board 8, the Briarwood Civic Association and Friends of the Briarwood Library, the leaders as- sessed the needs of the local Briarwood commu- nity. What they found most was quality of life is- sues, which have persisted during the pandemic. “The COVID Pandemic has had crippling ef- fects on the daily operations of our city and com- munities,” Rosenthal said. “As we continue to reopen our city, it is vital to ensure every commu- nity’s needs are met, and that starts with hearing from the source what tools and aid is needed from their local governments.” The group found a need for park safety and cleanliness, updates to MTA bus stops, graffiti cleaning and a way to expedite stalled and incom- plete Department of Transportation projects, ac- cording to Rosenthal.
