District Population Statistics, 40-Lucknow , Uttar Pradesh II I Census of India, 1951 I I DISTRIct POPULATION STATISTICS UTTAR PRADESH 40-LUC'KNOW DISTRICT " 315.42 :"LAHABAD: ; AND STATIONERY, UTTAR PRADESH, INDIA 1951 1953 LUC CPS FOREWORD THE Uttar Pradesh Government asked me in March, 1952, to supply them for the purposes of elections· to local bodies population statistics with separation for scheduled castes (i) mohalla/ward-wise for urban areas, and (ii) village-wise for rural areas. The Census Tabulation Plan did not provide for sorting of scheduled castes population for areas smaller than a tehsil or urban tract and the request from the Uttar Pradesh Government came when the slip sorting had been finished and the Tabulation Offices closed. As the census slips are mixed up for the purposes of sorting in one lot for a tehsil or urban tract, collection of data regarding scheduled castes population by mohallas/wards and villages would have involved enormous labour and expense if sorting of the slips had been taken up afresh. Fortunately, however, a secondary census record, viz. the National Citizens' Register, in which each slip has been copied, was available. By singular foresight it had been pre pared mohalla/ward-wise for urban areas and village-wise for rural areas. The required information has, therefore, been extracted from this record. 2. In the above circumstances there is a slight difference in the figures of population as arrived at by an earlier sorting of the slips and as now determined by counting from the N adona! Citizens' Register. This difference has been accen tuated by an order passed by me during the later count from the National Register of Citizens as follows:- (i) Count Ahirwars of Farrukhabad District, Raidas and Bhagat as 'Chamars'. (ii) Count Bhangi, Khakrob, Sweepers, Harijan, Mehtar, Jamadar and Achhut as 'Balmikis), The fact) that some members of the scheduled castes had returned their caste by names which did not find place in the schedule a s notified under section 341. of the Constitution ofIndia, came to my notice during the course of the earlier sortin. but at too late a stage to enable me to pass definite and uniform orders. I have tried to rectify it by passing this order for the purpose of counting from the National Citizens) Register. The differences in the figures of the two counts have been clearly set out in the tables that follow. 3. The figures of total population of mohallas/wards have been arrived at by actual counting from the National Citizens) Register, while the figures of total population of villages are those determined by actual sorting of the slips and recorded in the Primary Census Abstract. 4. In the Summary of Urban Population the code number of each town has been given. The first element of the code gives the code number of the district, the second the code number of the tehsil (or towns of over one lakh population) and the third the code number of the town (other than a town of one lakh population). The key t6 the code numbers of tehsils will be .£bund in the Summary of Rural Population, ~ RAJESHW ARI PRASAD, LA.S., RAMPUR: Superintendent) Census Operations) July 23) 1952. Upreti Lichenology Laboratory, National Botanical Research Institute Rana Pratap Marg, Lucknow - 226 001 *Email : [email protected] Introduction monographic studies (Awasthi 1980, Akhtar & Awasthi 1980, Awasthi & Srivastava 1989, Joshi & Lichens are basically fungi that construct self sustainable composite thalli symbiotically in Upreti 2007, 2008, Pant & Upreti 1993, Singh & association with alga and or cyanobacteria. They are Upreti 1984, Upreti 1988, 1997, Upreti & Büdel included in the fungal Kingdom, but have members 1990). In the mean time, lichens growing over of other two kingdoms; Bacteria and Chromista monuments attracted the attention of lichenologists (Cavalier-Smith 2004). Lichens are ubiquitous, and they are studied from some major monuments sensitive indicators of air pollution, microclimate of of Uttar Pradesh (Ayub 2005, Chatterjee et al. 1996, region, anthropogenic disturbances, forest health and Saxena et al. 2004, Singh & Upreti 1991). More continuity, and constitute an important component recently, air pollution studies with the help of of terrestrial biodiversity. It is estimated that in the lichens are being conducted in Faizabad (Dubey et world, there are about 20,000 species (Sipman & al. 1999), Kanpur (Satya & Upreti 2009, 2011), Aptroot ,2001) and in India 2300 species (Singh & Lucknow (Bajpai et al. 2004, Mishra et al. 2003, Sinha 2010). Saxena 2004, Saxena et al. 2007, Upreti & Bajpai 2003), Rae Bareli (Bajpai et al. 2010a, b) districts of In India, most of the lichenological explorations Uttar Pradesh and regarding this some lichens have were under taken in lichen rich regions such as been collected.

This work could not have taken its current shape in the absence of their contributions. I thank them all. First and foremost, I owe my greatest debt of gratitude to my advisor Gail Minault for her guidance and assistance. I am grateful for her useful comments, sharp criticisms, and invaluable suggestions on the earlier drafts, and for her constant encouragement, support, and generous time throughout my doctoral work. I must add that it was her path breaking scholarship in South Asian Islam that inspired me to come to Austin, Texas all the way from New Delhi, India. While it brought me an opportunity to work under her supervision, I benefited myself further at the prospect of working with some of the finest scholars and excellent human beings I have ever known.

  • The Dominant Anopheles Vectors of Human Malaria in the Asia-Pacific
Sinka et al. Parasites & Vectors 2011, 4:89 http://www.parasitesandvectors.com/content/4/1/89 RESEARCH Open Access The dominant Anopheles vectors of human malaria in the Asia-Pacific region: occurrence data, distribution maps and bionomic précis Marianne E Sinka1*, Michael J Bangs2, Sylvie Manguin3, Theeraphap Chareonviriyaphap4, Anand P Patil1, William H Temperley1, Peter W Gething1, Iqbal RF Elyazar5, Caroline W Kabaria6, Ralph E Harbach7 and Simon I Hay1,6* Abstract Background: The final article in a series of three publications examining the global distribution of 41 dominant vector species (DVS) of malaria is presented here. The first publication examined the DVS from the Americas, with the second covering those species present in Africa, Europe and the Middle East. Here we discuss the 19 DVS of the Asian-Pacific region. This region experiences a high diversity of vector species, many occurring sympatrically, which, combined with the occurrence of a high number of species complexes and suspected species complexes, and behavioural plasticity of many of these major vectors, adds a level of entomological complexity not comparable elsewhere globally. To try and untangle the intricacy of the vectors of this region and to increase the effectiveness of vector control interventions, an understanding of the contemporary distribution of each species, combined with a synthesis of the current knowledge of their behaviour and ecology is needed. Results: Expert opinion (EO) range maps, created with the most up-to-date expert knowledge of each DVS distribution, were combined with a contemporary database of occurrence data and a suite of open access, environmental and climatic variables.
