The Department of Parks and Recreation strives to accommodate and surpass the recreational and athletic needs of our citizens and welcomed guests. Each year, we accomplish this goal by maintaining and improving the quality of our facilities and ensuring the highest levels of safety for our 55 parks, community centers and other recreational facilities across the city.

We also strive to go beyond sporting and recreational events to develop educational programs for our youth. Our After School, Spring Break and Summer Youth Enhancement programs were designed to stimulate the motor, social and academic skills of young individuals. Whether through our Harvey Johnson, Jr., Mayor academic programs, holiday festivals or sporting events, the City of Jackson, Mississippi city of Jackson continues to attract thousands of citizens and welcomed guests through an array of programs the entire family can enjoy.

2011 Gateway and Cornerstone Projects

 Reconstructed the flower bed at Pearl and Pascagoula.

The Park Maintenance Division oversees the lawn c are and maintenance of six (6) city of Jackson cemeteries yearly. The last available cemetery plot was sold in May, 2011.

*Greenwood Cemetery is the final resting place of seven (7) governors, fourteen (14) mayors, eight (8) judges, twenty-four (24) clergymen and six (6) confederate generals. On January 10, 2011, Mayor Harvey Johnson, Jr. along with the Greenw ood Cemetery Restoration Association, signed a proclamation in support of the designation of the “Governor A.M. Scott Monument.” The monument is located in the Greenwood Cemetery as a Mississippi landmark.

Mission Statement The mission of the Park Maintenance Division is to provide a quality experience for all park users by maintaining a safe, clean and aesthetically pleasing environment for all city of Jackson parks and designated green spaces; to maintain and preserve all park land for future generations and provide support for other division’s programmed activities.

Accomplishments

 Fondren Park (formerly named Cherokee Heights Park) –

Through a collaborative effort with the city of Jackson and Renaissance Group, the following features were added to Fondren Park: a walking trail with lighting; playground equipment (to include a rope climber); picnic tables were also installed, along with a water fountain for the handicap.

 Josh Halbert Gardens – Installed a new irrigation system and re -planted and mulched all flowerbeds at City Hall.

 V.A. Softball Complex – Installed new benches, built several ,new flowerbeds around softball areas; painted the Senior League field restrooms and put new tops on the existing dug outs and press box.

 Belhaven Heights – Installed a walking trail, benches and garbage receptacles.

 City Hall - Installed a new irrigation system.

PARK RANGERS

Mission Statement

The mission of the Park Rangers Unit is to ensure the highest levels of safety for welcomed guests that visit the city’s 55 parks and recreational facilities. Established in 1999, the Park Ranger Division consists of sworn, state and locally- certified police officers who work under the authority of the Chief of Police, Rebecca Coleman. The Park Rangers also dedicate their time and effort to provide a safe environment for a variety of special events throughout the year.

MYNELLE GARDENS

The Mynelle Gardnes Botanical Society Mission Statement

The purpose of this organization shall be to render support and assistance to the management and staff of Mynelle Gardens; to restore the gardens to the level of excellence originally visualized by Mrs. Hayward; to improve the quality of the cultural and social environment of our city through horticultural activities; and to develop programs at Mynelle Gardens with an educational purpose and to generate financial support for the gardens activities and development.

The Westbrook House which is located on the premises was recently renovated. During fall 2003, the city renovated the exterior of the Westbrook House. Currently, the city is in the process of restoring the interior as well.

SMITH-WILLS STADIUM

Smith-Wills Stadium is a beautiful facility which features many amenities and has a distinct, architectural appearance. The stadium is designed to create the ultimate game day experience for players, coaches, fans and the media.

From 1975 to 1990, Smith-Wills Stadium was home to the . The Jackson Mets was a AA affiliate of the . From 1991 to 1999, Smith- Wills Stadium also served as home to the Jackson Generals, a Texas League AA affiliate of the .

Several upgrades have been completed to the multi-purpose facility. In 2004, the city of Jackson installed a synthetic playing surface developed by Sprint Turf, Inc. The stadium also has 1,700 fixed seating and a 3,500 bleacher seating capacity.

Today, Smith-Wills Stadium continues to host professional baseball, football, soccer and other youth sporting events. The facility is also available for lease to entertain guests for concerts and birthday parties.

Session III Registration: The first day of registration is Monday, May 21, June 18 – June 22, 2012 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. T.B.A. 2012 at the Parks and Recreation Administrative Office, located in the Jackson Medical Mall. Advance registration is required. Session IV June 25 – June 29, 2012 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. T.B.A. Orientation: Regardless of which aquatic class you are registered for, the first day of class is designated for facility rules and skills Session V testing. July 2, 3, 5, 6, 2012 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. T.B.A. Swim Apparel: All students are required to wear swimsuits. Cut- Session VI offs, body suits or street clothing are not allowed. Attendance and Conduct: Attendance is vital to the success of your child’s learning experience and progression through the program. Important skill development and safety skills are covered in each class. Therefore, make-ups are not allowed for missed classes. If a child is unwilling to participate in the class, we may recommend that they attend another class session.

Health Conditions: If your child has any type of medical problems or physical concerns that need to be addressed such as asthma, limited joint movements, or seizures, please provide this information to the instructor prior to class.

THUNDERSTORM & LIGHTING CONDITIONS 1) When thunder and/or lighting is first noticed, pool staff will use the Flash to Bang (F-B) method to determine its rough distance and speed. 2) For each 5 seconds, from F-B, lightning is 1 mile away. Thus, 10 seconds = 2 miles, 15 seconds = 3 miles, and 20 seconds = 4 miles. 3) At a F-B count of 30, the pool should be evacuated. Patrons should be directed to a safe shelter nearby. 4) Pool activities should remain suspended until 30 minutes after the last thunder is heard. The distance from Strike A to Strike B to Strike C can be from 5 – 8 miles away, and it can strike much farther away.

1) All pool reservations are $40.00 per hour with a $20.00 non-refundable deposit, due the next business day after placing the reservation. All swimming pool reservations must be paid in full by cashier’s check or money order within (3) three business days of the reservation. All reservations are handled at the administrative office only, located in the Jackson Medical Mall. Reservations are determined by staff availability. The Department of Parks and Recreation reserves the right to refuse any rental at our facilities.

2) Reservations are available Monday through Saturday, between the hours of 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. All pools are closed on Sunday and City of Jackson observed holidays. No reservations will be accepted on these days due to pool closures.

3) Persons placing reservations must be of (21) twenty one years of age or older to rent a pool.

4) The city of Jackson’s Parks and Recreation Department will not be liable for any lost, stolen or damaged items during the course of the reservation time.

5) There will not be any swimming pool reservation before or after the regular summer season.

6) Park Rangers will patrol all park and pool facilities; however, security for events will be the responsibility of the renting party.

7) Each person MUST shower before entering the pool.

8) No smoking, alcoholic beverages, food, drink, glass containers, drugs, weapons, horseplay, gymnastic activities, profanity, improper behavior or vulgar language allowed in or outside the pool area. Any violations of these rules may be the grounds for the immediate cancellation of the rental agreement.

9) No diving in shallow or crowded areas. No floats are allowed in the pool unless approved by the pool manager.

10) Patrons with open sores or infectious diseases are not permitted in the pool area.

11) Pool area must be left clean after each use.

12) Proper swimming apparel must be worn during the reservation (no street wear, swimsuits only, no cut-offs).

13) The City of Jackson’s Department of Parks and Recreation provides professionally trained and certified pool managers and lifeguards for all swimming pool functions, but understand that you and your guests are swimming at your own risk.

14) Refusal to follow the direction of above mentioned personnel will result in the immediate termination of the reservation and disbursement of the guests.

15) No trespassing after swimming pool has been closed.
