2:06 PM Ah, thank you! I missed that.

2:06 PM So hard to categorize and shelve...especially graphic memoirs, adult and children's NF works in graphic novel form...

2:06 PM What is a graphic novel? https://dw-wp.com/resources/what-is-a-graphic-novel

2:06 PM Hi from Ohio!

2:06 PM Hello from New York!

2:07 PM Hi from Massachusetts!

2:07 PM can you use the works "comic" and "Graphic" interchangeably?

2:07 PM Hello from Vermont!

2:07 PM what's the difference between comics and graphic novels?

2:07 PM And where does manga fit in the GN universe?

2:07 PM Hi from Hamilton, Ontario!

2:07 PM Thanks for sending your questions along in the chat, I will pass them along to the panelists and they will address some of the questions at the end during a Q&A session.

2:08 PM I wonder if people will get into this, but how do you relate graphic novels to manga? Would manga be considered its own genre or do you include it as a subset of graphic novels now?

2:08 PM Comics are usually single issues in a floppy zine format where as graphic novels are typically collections of multiple issues

2:08 PM manga is basically a japanese graphic novel Crash Course in Graphic Novels Webinar Chat Transcript page 12

2:08 PM Right next door to that in Oakville :)

2:08 PM No static here.

2:08 PM Another term you may encounter is visual novel.

2:08 PM Hi from Burnaby British Columbia

2:09 PM The lower comic is "The Yellow Kid."

2:10 PM Manwha is Korean graphic novels. Another term you may come across.

2:10 PM Manga is written, anime is animated.

2:10 PM I saw a video on the Yellow Kid on the wonderful ComicTropes YouTube channel.

2:10 PM Anime is animated, many times adapted from manga

2:11 PM

2:12 PM @Laurel Jones https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACyj5eLedno This is a great video on the Yellow Kid era

2:12 PM sorry to see that American Born Chinese is not included. ??

2:19 PM Pizza Dog!!

2:19 PM How did we get from "comics" to "graphic novels"?

2:19 PM Expanding a universe is another reason. Much of the story between Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra (a 70 year span) is told in comics and graphic novels

2:20 PM Ice Cream Man had a palendrome issue

2:20 PM My dyslexic daughter loves them -- visual clues to help her and she feels super successful when she speeds through one.

2:20 PM as someone who is into poetry and graphic novels I wholeheartedly agree

2:21 PM Sometimes "comics" and "graphic novel" is interchangable

2:21 PM Also could be true with illustrators or colorists of graphic novels if you like the style.

2:22 PM Totally agree Lynn. Need to know a bit to help patrons

2:22 PM Comics is usually for small issues, but it is used for both sometimes.

2:23 PM My son watches Riverdale tv program. Is this meant to follow old Archie comics?? Does not seem like those comics I remember growing up.

2:23 PM based on "inspired by"

2:23 PM NYT GN & manga monthly bestseller list: https://www.nytimes.com/books/best-sellers/graphic-books-and- manga/

2:23 PM Takes the characters, brings them into modern times/story lines, I think. (re: Riverdale)

2:28 PM Heard not great things about the tv series of Snowpiercer

2:28 PM Snow Piercer was a really good movie

2:28 PM Y: The Last Man is the single greatest graphic novel. But all of the other ones are okay.

2:28 PM MFTIM is hefty but the art is fantastic

2:28 PM My Favorite Thing is Monsters is one of the most beautiful GNs Crash Course in Graphic Novels Webinar Chat Transcript page 18

2:28 PM My Favorite Thing is Monsters is AMAZING

2:28 PM Torso by Brian Michael Bendis is a great choice for Crime too

2:28 PM Where will we be able to access the chat transcrpt?

2:29 PM Yes Natalie, all of these are not elementary

2:29 PM I loved My Favorite Thing of Monsters, but it was too emotionally heavy to get through for me

2:29 PM sin city is on the left

2:29 PM It is very heavy

2:29 PM thanks

2:29 PM really want to read my favorite thing is monsters

2:29 PM Is there a difference between comics and graphic novels?

2:29 PM Ed Brubaker & Sean Phillips are such a great team!

2:29 PM Yes, she was ill.

2:29 PM What's the title of the first GN?

2:29 PM Debra - yes

2:29 PM symantics

2:29 PM She's working on a sequel I think

2:29 PM Debra - graphic novels are a complete story in one book. Comics are usually single-issue, then they can be combined into a graphic novel in trade paperbcks

2:29 PM debatable

2:29 PM The chat transcript will be posted on our website tomorrow along with the recording.

2:30 PM Graphic novels are *usually* a collection of comics Crash Course in Graphic Novels Webinar Chat Transcript page 19

2:30 PM Isn't the difference that comics come in issues and get released into volumes later, whereas GNs are just by volume?

2:30 PM oh berlin is an incredible work

2:30 PM YES LISA HANAWALT

2:30 PM Thank you!

2:30 PM That's one hefty book

2:30 PM so glad that tuca and bertie got another chance

2:30 PM Thanks Alex.

2:31 PM Thanks

2:31 PM recommendations for a graphic novels for someone who does not like graphic novels??

2:31 PM Yes, the chat transcript, the slides, and recording will be available at: https://bit.ly/3eXoV22

2:31 PM MARCH is a great historical graphic novel series, 3 parts. Civil Rights Movement, told through the perspective of civil rights leader and U.S. Congressman John Lewis.

2:31 PM Nancy: what age group?

2:31 PM i remember feeling that way about Asterios Polyp -- it was so NOVELLY. Felt like reading fiction to me.

2:31 PM Do the authors do their own artwork, or are they partners?

2:31 PM adult

2:31 PM Emma has been on my TBR forever and I am still ashamed I haven't gotten to it yet. lol.

2:31 PM Nancy - I would probably recommend some graphic memoirs

2:31 PM Nancyyyyyy hahaha Crash Course in Graphic Novels Webinar Chat Transcript page 20

2:31 PM I find giving people biographies is a good start if they don't like graphic novels. such a s persepolis

2:31 PM I also love March by John Lewis. We have them under Biographical Graphic Novels.

2:31 PM Love Emma!

2:32 PM Nancy is an old comic strip

2:32 PM I always go with Sandman by Gaiman. Usually seems to hooko folks.

2:32 PM Strange Planet is so funny.

2:32 PM Sluggo is LIT

2:32 PM The March series was one of the first graphic novels that our library purchased. It is such a great series!

2:32 PM On a Sunbeam!!

2:32 PM Sandman might need a lot of TW these days

2:32 PM on a sunbeam is GORGEOUS. I read it lately and cried

2:32 PM My library has Pride and Prejudice and recommend it

2:32 PM The Best we could do - Thi Bui,

2:32 PM I loved On a Sunbeam!!!

2:32 PM TW?

2:32 PM Craig Thompson's graphic novel Habibi (2011)

2:32 PM idk if anyone has read heartbreakers but its a GREAT lgbt comic

2:32 PM Ah.

2:33 PM Some of my favorite humerous GNs are Sarah Anderson's "Sarah Scribbles" series

2:33 PM Ah, my comfort zone.

2:33 PM Andersen*

2:33 PM pronounced "Mon" like "yeah mon!"

2:33 PM And yeah, I think with adults who don't like GNs, you need to know what they don't like about them before giving a specific reommendation? Crash Course in Graphic Novels Webinar Chat Transcript page 21

2:33 PM yes manga time

2:33 PM Manga is very popular here.

2:33 PM oooooh

2:34 PM translated

2:34 PM usually translated

2:34 PM translated

2:34 PM They're usually translated.

2:34 PM A student once asked me, "Mr. Arzac, where are the backwards books?" I had no idea what she was talking about. A few hours later, it occurred to me "OHHHHHHHHH, manga."

2:34 PM The Best We Could Do is incredible

2:34 PM I LOVE graphic nonfiction.

2:34 PM so glad I randomly found exquiste corpse on our shelfs.

2:34 PM Yen+ magazine used to have american, japanese, korean, vietnamese, chinese comics. half the book was left to right, and the other half right to left

2:34 PM Thanks for recs. will read through this chat later, going by way too fast!

2:34 PM LOVE The Best We Could Do!

2:34 PM YES THEY THEM PRONOUNS

2:34 PM These are great to start for non-graphic novel readers Nancy

2:34 PM The Best We Could Do was AMAZING

2:34 PM Manga as of late has attracted a large following in other countries where artists draw in the manga style, but the stories originate in the artist's mother language

2:34 PM cause when I'm reading them online they are ALWAYS begging for translators

2:34 PM Love Good Talk by Mira Jacob

2:34 PM especially The Best We Could Do...so moving and heartfelt Crash Course in Graphic Novels Webinar Chat Transcript page 22

2:35 PM Hey there! Writing From NJ. I wanted to know whether it is helpful to include manga, manhua, and manhwa with Western comics since there are cultural differences that might need more context to make recommendations (IE knowing Shojou from Shonen manga)

2:35 PM Good Talk was so powerful.

2:35 PM Box Brown did a history of Tetris which was interesting

2:35 PM I recommend "They Called Us Enemy" by George Takei

2:35 PM Yeah I'm definitely gonna advocate the quick and easy guides to some of my libraries

2:35 PM I love "The best we could do"

2:35 PM Elizabeth - I shelve them separately from comics if that's what you're talking about

2:35 PM I loved the way that Good Talk felt like clip art, but also unique. Distilled such complicated messages.

2:35 PM Good question, Elizabeth! I think about that too since my library has recently combined them all in one Graphic Novels section, and I'm not sure I agree.

2:35 PM One that's recent that I love is Open Borders

2:35 PM The thing about manga, manhwa and manhua is that those just show ehere they came from. within those categories you find the same genre range you would find with other books

2:36 PM I love Beastars, The Girl from the Other Side, and a Silent Voice

2:36 PM A quick & easy guide is fantastic.

2:36 PM Beastars is great!

2:36 PM We need a whole webinar about shelving graphic novels!

2:36 PM Do you house these collections sepapartely and do you consider Nonfiction a Graphic *Novel*?

2:36 PM Eternaut!

2:36 PM Ack, my bad. Open Borders: the science and ethics of immigration

2:36 PM I put the nonfiction graphic novels in nonfiction

2:36 PM Is there a publisher of graphic novels in Spanish or Haitian-Creole?

2:36 PM big proponent of foreign comics transtated into english. Carthago was interesting Crash Course in Graphic Novels Webinar Chat Transcript page 23

2:37 PM We file nonfiction graphic novels with the other graphic novels. We put them after the fiction

2:37 PM Where to find Graphic novel recommendations for K-4?

2:37 PM We have a graphic novel section for fiction and nonfiction and a manga collection both for adult and teen.

2:37 PM We catalog them under Graphic Novels.

2:37 PM just ordered the first Rose of Versailles for our system

2:37 PM We just separated our Manga & GNs. They're shelved next to each other but not interfiled. We found readers treating them like different formats rather than different genres.

2:37 PM We also catalog nonfiction gns in the GN section

2:37 PM I love translations. help my kids see how global some issues are

2:37 PM IDW Comics has a new Spanish line

2:37 PM cloven was interesting. Doesn't sound like it would be great, but it is

2:37 PM Fantagraphics does a lot of reprints and translations for older European and some Spanish language stuff

2:37 PM the Ta-Nehisi Coates run of Black Panther is GREAT

2:38 PM Whaaaat. I need that.

2:38 PM Scholastic has done some Spanish publications of popular GN's like Guts, Smile, Drama by Telgemeier.

2:38 PM Ah, BookCon had them

2:38 PM Black panther was pretty good, but a dense read for people just getting started on the genre.

2:38 PM Joe Hill!

2:38 PM K-4 recs: try noflyingnocapes.com (or .org, can't remember)

2:43 PM I think "Fence" is a LGBT comic too

2:43 PM Have you read his adaptation of No Longer Human?

2:43 PM I only know Jujji Ito from his comic Spiral

2:44 PM Cat Diary was AWESOME!!!!

2:44 PM Ito just put out a new art book Crash Course in Graphic Novels Webinar Chat Transcript page 26

2:44 PM i didn't enjoy fence tbh

2:44 PM thank you for the hyperlinks!

2:44 PM he is the master of disturbing

2:44 PM No Longer Human I've heard is ok but it's an adaptation of a heavy novella

2:44 PM but I know a lot of ppl do so it's still a good recommendation for patrons

2:44 PM His many short story collections are a good starting point

2:44 PM Dwayne McDuffie <3 Creator of Static Shock and head writer on Justice League Unlimited. He is also Keegan Michael Key's half brother!

2:45 PM will slides be sent with the recording? (I hope)

2:45 PM exactly. things look so normal...until they're not

2:45 PM Selene, yes they will!

2:45 PM You can download the slides for today's webinar at:hhttps://bit.ly/3eXoV22

2:45 PM the YALSA best graphic fiction of the year for young adults is really good if you are new to GF and are looking to improve your youth RA skills

2:46 PM YALSA has some really great recommendations for graphic novels

2:46 PM Any recommendations for GN in Spanish?

2:46 PM http://www.ala.org/yalsa/great-graphic-novels

2:46 PM Is there a good place to look for books to get patrons started if they've never read a graphic novel? Thinking I should create a booklist patrons can refer to

2:46 PM Awards for K-8 GN?

2:46 PM Anyone dealt with any censorship or "community/parental" concern issues concerning graphic novels in public libraries?

2:46 PM What are some good resources to help with GN RA for youth, especially children?

2:47 PM the link for slides didn't seem to work? Crash Course in Graphic Novels Webinar Chat Transcript page 27

2:47 PM Sorry here is the link again that should work: Download the slides and certificate for this presentation at: https://bit.ly/3eXoV22

2:47 PM Debbie, there's a section "Best Publication for Kids" here:

2:47 PM https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Eisner_Award_winners

2:48 PM by age group too

2:48 PM Thanks for your questions. I am passing along the questions to the panelists for a Q&A session at the end.

2:48 PM That also sounds awesome, Liz.

2:49 PM Thank you Sergio! I meant to say award websites aren't always easy to navigate, so Wikipedia/Google/NoveList can often be a better resource

2:49 PM will this info be emailed to us when it is archived? WFH, and need this reference on work pc.

2:49 PM I agree with Liz about that kind of webinar!

2:49 PM Would you include GN in a regular RA list?

2:49 PM That link for the slides didn't work--even with the extra H removed

2:49 PM https://bit.ly/3eXoV22

2:49 PM The slides and the chat will be available here: https://bit.ly/3eXoV22

2:49 PM Johnny Wander!

2:50 PM I've heard a lot about that series, and have been eager to read it.

2:50 PM Jill, good to know. I have it, so now I'm really anticipating it.

2:50 PM Really? It works for me. Already downloaded the slides. You'll have to scroll down teh page a bit to find the link.

2:51 PM Is there a "starter set" for those of us who work with teens and tweens? My middle schoolers love GN, but I have to be careful about content.

2:51 PM I have a bit of a big question: Is there any kind of authoritative comprehensive core list that has been developed or is in the process of being developed for graphic novels? The field seems to be lacking with that sort of level of collection development resources for librarians which I think would be incredibly helpful to librarians who are not graphics experts or readers. I think a graphic novel specific database would be very useful to patrons too. Crash Course in Graphic Novels Webinar Chat Transcript page 28

2:52 PM !! Yes

2:52 PM @ Becky There are Spanish translations of popular GN's by Raina Telgemeier: Smile (Sonrie!), Drama (Drama), Sisters (Hermanas), Guts (Agallas), Ghosts (Fantasmas).

2:52 PM YAASSSS

2:52 PM Monster is amazing!!!

2:52 PM It's an excellent anime series as welll

2:52 PM Monster is a classic

2:52 PM Monster is incredible and the anime was excellent

2:52 PM Monster is amazing!!!

2:52 PM Alex, yes. 21st Century Boys was nice too.

2:52 PM GOt it.

2:52 PM Thanks, Sergio

2:53 PM NIcholas - that would be great, but I don't know of anything that has been developed. Disparate sites trying to fill that hole right now, like noflyingnotights.com, and I have age ratings on my reviews on my blog graphiclibrary.org, but I don't know of anything big

2:53 PM yea it just seems to need to happen

2:53 PM becuase the genre grows so exponentially

2:53 PM Like this, Stitches by David Small...

2:53 PM So you're looking for something that's like, these are the basics you MUST have in your graphic novel section?

2:53 PM Are any ot these appropriate for high school libraries?

2:53 PM Kind of reminds me of the title Deafo for younger readers

2:54 PM El Deafo

2:54 PM Darla - I have Monster in my high school lilbrary

2:54 PM great book

2:54 PM Thank you! Crash Course in Graphic Novels Webinar Chat Transcript page 29

2:54 PM I'll check the all out...

2:54 PM I have been looking for something similar, Nicholar and Sara, and have also come up short. It might be a cool thing that could be produced by the collaboration of librarians could produce?

2:54 PM Yay for Y!

2:54 PM huzzah for Y!

2:54 PM Oops, typoed that kinda majorly.

2:55 PM Hmm, that sounds good

2:55 PM How do we convince parents that graphic novels are legitimate forms of literature worth reading for their children? And how do we convince adult readers the same thing?

2:55 PM LOL eeeeee

2:55 PM Daughters of Ys is SO GOOD

2:55 PM Congratulations!

2:56 PM My TBR pile is getting higher and higher. LOL

2:56 PM Antonio - talk about the advance vocabulary, the visual literacy practice, the enjoyment, the classics to graphics

2:56 PM Same Jeanenne

2:56 PM *advanced

2:56 PM I like to focus on the multiple styples of learning. Images simply work for some better than words to build a love of reading and appreciation for literature in various styles

2:57 PM thank you for your replies/resources to my question

2:57 PM i also feel like the non-linear way that you learn to absorb the info/story mimics the non-linear way of absorbing for digital natives...

2:57 PM I'm just starting Giant Days! Good to know I won't hit a hiatus! Crash Course in Graphic Novels Webinar Chat Transcript page 30

2:57 PM Antonio - also the storytelling practice, the brain work that has to be done "between the panels"

2:59 PM Thanks so much. You have piqued my interest...

2:59 PM Thanks!

3:00 PM Oh--they're for everyone! An excellent gateway book for non-readers as well. They're an integral part of my high school library collection.

3:00 PM Hello from Florida, Ny. thank you, information was very helpful

3:00 PM Very informative! Thanks!

3:00 PM i often use graphic novels as palate cleansers between dense prose books.

3:00 PM I always rec graphic novels to reluctant readers.

3:00 PM Please excuse if this was discussed earlier, but I was ignoring the chat while watching the webinar because I know practically nothing about Graphic Novels... I think I'm in the wrong place because I signed up hoping to learn about literary fiction in GN format. I read "New Kid" by Jerry Craft a while back, so I know it's out there. Can anyone recommend some literary fiction with diverse characters?

3:00 PM Jeanette - a little of both. Go with what they want to be reading, and if it's older titles or new ones, buy them

3:00 PM I include them in displays

3:00 PM Great question! Thank you!!!

3:00 PM Is the chat going to be archived/included with the video?

3:00 PM TCAF showcase: https://www2.torontocomics.com/2020/05/27/announcing-the-tcaf-2020-digital-showcase/

3:00 PM I would love more webinars on this subject and some of the various subsets, especially for the international GN world.

3:00 PM Yeah that would be cool

3:00 PM Is there a name for graphic novels that are not part of a superheroes series. Individual stories....

3:00 PM Way to go, Roxanne!

3:00 PM I love suggesting GA for kids tha are reluctant readers. They get in the habit of reading a bit more and then move onto chapter books with a bit more "meat".

3:01 PM right?

3:01 PM Yes, the chat transcript will be made available along with the slides as well.

3:01 PM Mary Lou - I recommend Junji Ito's comic adaptation of No Longer Human by Osamu Dazai

3:01 PM Hi from Colorado! We have our GN collections of two floors. One is Kids and Teen (same room different areas) one is Adults (upstairs). They have sent us works from Teen that they fear are too adult to be near the kids' areas. But now I am housing a lot of teen GN up here. So teens and kids are coming up to browse the adult section and we do have everything up here in terms of topics and of course they are quite graphic. Any thoughts on working with families who are coming upstairs to browse? Thanks!
