LUNA’S STORY

As you are aware, Friends of AALA has awarded scholarships to LAUSD students for several years. Periodically, we share with you letters that recipients have sent to us, giving an update on their lives as they matriculate into college. Recently, we received a letter from Luna Gonzalez, a 2014 recipient, who received the Unit J scholarship for which those members had raised the funds. Luna graduated from Fairfax High School and enrolled into Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Below is her letter:

I'm sorry for writing this letter so late. I received one of your scholarships for LAUSD seniors in 2014 to go to MIT. I graduated this January, a semester early, with a B.S. in mathematics. I am writing to thank you for the scholarship and for helping me get started in my first semester.

During my time at MIT I learned more than I could have imagined within my field, and I also got to work in a lot of great places. For the past three years, I worked in a chemical biology lab on campus, the Shoulders Lab, doing math modeling and data analysis. I helped with a paper about viral evolution which is available for anyone to read here: "Host Proteostasis Modulates Influenza Evolution," https://elifesciences.org/articles/28652.

I was able to get two scholarships from my school to live and work in Mexico. Last summer, I worked at Unima Biotech, a company that makes low-cost blood tests for HIV and tuberculosis, and this spring, I'll be working at Kurago Biotek, also based in Guadalajara, on a probiotic that helps lower cholesterol. In Mexico, I got to know my aunts and uncles and learn a lot about the culture while doing science.

I also tutored students from the Boston area and TA'd for an MIT program helping prepare incoming freshmen. I enjoyed all these experiences and learned a lot. I haven't yet found a full time job for when I come back from working at Kurago Biotek, but I'm hoping to do math modeling or programming for a biology or environmental project, and maybe continue being involved in tutoring or teaching at the same time. Thank you again for the scholarship. It helped me get started in my first year and also encouraged me to apply for more scholarships along the way.

AALA 2018 ADMINISTRATORS OF THE YEAR

The five honorees below were selected by a committee of their peers for this honor. The recipients have received a $500 stipend that is to be used to help support an LAUSD student program/educational activity. The stipend is made possible through the generosity of the California Credit Union and Gloria Rogers, VP School & Community Development.

Adult Department Ellen Baker, Principal, North Valley Occupational Center A characteristic that Ms. Baker exemplifies is respect, as it is found in everything she does within her profession. She is an excellent role model, a fantastic principal and a great representative of administrators.

Elementary Department Celia Mata-Pacheco, Assistant Principal, Glassell Park Elementary School Ms. Mata Pacheco once shared that she discovered her “why” when she was working as an immigrant rights advocate. This experience helped her realize that in order to transform a community, we must first empower the children.

Secondary Department Nidia Castro, Principal, Northridge Academy High School Principal Castro empowers all members of Northridge Academy High School to reach their potential as educators and students. Ms. Castro is the most inspiring and empowering principal, and positively embraced by the school community.

School Support Administrators Dr. Jose Posada, Director, Local District Central Dr. Jose Posada leads by example and empowers his team of principals to do the same. Having a supportive Director makes all the difference to a school-site administrator with countless demands and limited resources. This is possible because Dr. Posada’s relationship with his principals is built on a foundation of trust.

Unit J Lorena Padilla-Melendez, Director, Community Outreach, Facilities Services Division Ms. Padilla-Melendez has distinguished herself for keenly understanding the ethnic, cultural, and socio• economic diversity of the populations served by the District which has enabled her to effectively work in conjunction with communications, public relations projects taking place with District management, community groups, and elected officials.
