Friday, July 19, 2019 Meeting Information This Week's Presenter Vacaville The Opera House Coach Dan Hawkins, UC Davis Football Thursday at 12:15 PM He has taken his family on vacation to Machu Picchu in Peru. He taught science, jumped out of airplanes, and coached football in 13 different countries. For Dan Hawkins, who was introduced as football's new Club Officers head coach on November 28, 2016, those aren�t simply items to cross off a bucket list, they have been opportunities to learn. It�s that thirst for learning, and application of that knowledge, that brought Hawkins, P.J. Goodson a 1984 UC Davis alumnus who played and coached with legendary head coach Jim Sochor, back to his President alma mater. Club Director Barton Brierley In 2018 he led the Aggies to their most successful season at the Division I level. He was named Big Sky President-Elect Coach of the Year. And following UC Davis' playoff run, Hawkins became UC Davis' inaugural recipient of Jan Crocker Larsen the Eddie Robinson Award, presented to the top head coach in the NCAA's Division I Football Secretary Championship Subdivision. Milton Steck Treasurer In addition to excelling inside the classroom at the fifth-ranked public school in the nation, football student- athletes also set a new precedent in the program's history: By moving spring practices to middle of the winter quarter, student-athletes Chris Motes can participate in internships, community service projects, or study abroad � opportunities available to students on campus that are Public Relations unheard of within a football program at any level across the nation. Thanks to the integration of Hawkins' core principals, new football Chair alums are now pursuing graduate degrees abroad � an uncommon opportunity for any UC Davis student. Cynthia M. Peffers Club Director Within two seasons, Hawkins successfully created a culture focused on providing a well-rounded college experience that combines elite Traci Perry academics with the opportunity to compete at the highest level of college athletics. Club Director International Service During Hawkins� first year at UC Davis, his team set 46 new Big Sky era records, faced more ranked teams (or teams receiving votes) Chair since joining the league, won five games against Division I competition� equal to the combined total from the previous three seasons, � Donna L. Scolaro and collected five Big Sky Player of the Week awards, matching the total from the last four years combined. Shelby Turned Boise State from a "school with the blue football turf" into a perennial national power as its head coach from 2001-05 Sergeant-at-Arms During the Hawkins era, the Broncos posted a 56-11 overall record, which included a 37-3 record and 31-game win streak in the S. Scott Reynolds Western Athletic Conference Club Programs Chair Boise State led the country in scoring (45.6) and total offense (501.5) in 2002 Bob Hampton Hawkins coached 20 All-WAC first-team selections, three All-Americans, and 10 players that played in the NFL Youth Services Chair Coach Hawkins led the Broncos to four WAC titles, collected Coach of the Year honors in 2002 and �04, and ended the 2004 season as a finalist for the Paul "Bear" Bryant College Football Coach of the Year Award Shawn Paschal Took over a rebuilding Colorado (2006-10) program and gained invaluable experience during his tenure with the Big XII iPast President Conference Rene Duddy Remained within the collegiate ranks after Colorado and served as a studio analyst at ESPN before returning to UC Davis Assistant Governor Also coached at Christian Brothers High School (1986-87), College of the Siskiyous (1988-91) and Sonoma State (1992) Led the U.S. National Football Team to a gold medal at the 2015 IFAF World Championship Membership Anniversaries P.J. Lopez Last week�s meeting attracted a record 10 guests. And who says there�s no such thing as a free lunch? July 3rd Perhaps it was because President PJ was gaveling her second meeting and everyone wanted to see if she Maria Martinucci continued her quest to be deemed the Iron Maiden, putting the non-compliant members in their place. And, July 4th of course, she tried. She found herself the first offender, however, when she attempted to announce Charles A. Crouse birthdays and anniversaries, but was quickly chastised and reminded she was out of time as the meeting July 6th �wandered� a bit earlier in the session. Theresa C. Hite The result: No finemaster, no Happy Dollars. Nonetheless, the meeting was adjourned 3 minutes early, July 7th restoring her popularity numbers. Walter A. Quinn July 9th John Carli STEPPING UP July 13th Helena Chung stepped in for absent greeter John Shelby and was doing double duty � Greeting and getting everyone to sign Jan Paul McGuire Larsen�s get-well card. After it was learned that the current sergeant-at-arms had to resign unexpectedly, Scott Reynolds quickly volunteered to fill the vacancy Suihkonen until a permanent replacement is found. July 31st Who will step up? GRATEFULNESS Our president presented past president Shawn Paschal with a plaque and his gavel. Initially, Shawn was wary of being called to the podium, thinking it might be another demotion ceremony. It was, of course, recognition of his ability to be a steady, calm and a valued leader. President PJ noted, �His family values were apparent and an inspiration to the club. It was fun watching the club grow as a stronger family unit.� Presentations by Foundation Director Bill Seiden (sporting Bill Powers shirt) included Katheryn Tuberty�s for her Paul Harris Fellowship, plus 4, contributions, as well as President PJ for her first, Jim Kellogg for his plus 2. Meanwhile, Will C. Wood Interact club officers were introduced by advisor Tim Healer and were presented an Interact feathered flag and tablecloth for use during all their upcoming events.
