A mai Māzandarān középkori (majdnem) elnevezése, mely látszólag egy a sok közül, a mai Irán, Afganisztán és Közép-Ázsia történeti régióinak egyike. Disszertációm címe: Tabaristān lokális fejedelemségeinek története a mongol kor előtt az iszlám idején. Ebben a közel kétszáz oldalban arra vállalkozom, hogy megvizsgáljam ennek az észak-iráni régiónak a történelmét. Pontosabban, az itt egykor uralkodott négy dinasztiáét: A Dābūyidákét, a Qārinwandokét, a Bāwandidákét és végül a Bādūspānidákét. Mint minden írásnak, e dolgozatnak is határai vannak. Mivel a rendelkezésemre álló oldalszám adott volt, emiatt megfelelő korlátok közé próbáltam terelni munkámat. A kissé hosszúra nyúlt cím megpróbálja pontosan definiálni a dolgozatban vizsgált korszakot. Időben a Kr.u. 7. század derekától a Kr.u. 13. század elejéig terjed munkám. A kezdőpont a Sāsānida Birodalom bukása viszonylag könnyű választás, mivel innentől számíthatjuk a helyi dinasztiák önállóságát – egyáltalán, Tabaristān mint földrajzi és politikai térség súlyának megnövekedését. Annál nehezebb volt viszont a végpontot meghatározni. Mivel az egyes dinasztiák története elágazik és nem egyszerre ér véget, így - talán önkényesen - 13. század első évtizedét választottam. Ez az egyik lokális dinasztia, a Bāwandidák időleges bukásának pillanata, melyet a Khwārizmi Birodalom okoz. Mivel tudjuk, hogy alig tíz év múlva az Iránt elérő mongol hódítás alapvető változásokat idéz elő elsöpörve Khwārizmot is, emiatt történetileg ez a cezúra tűnt a legracionálisabbnak. Az olvasó talán felvetheti, hogy miért nem egy dinasztia, mondjuk, a Bāwandidák vagy a négy dinasztia közül a legtovább hatalmon maradó Bādūspānidák történetét választottam? Nos, erre válaszom az lehet, hogy Tabaristān története ilyen összetett, mely tény nem engedi meg, hogy csak egy szálat „futassunk végig”. A különböző periódusban ezek a dinasztiák egymás mellett éltek, egymással kialakított viszonyuk nem vizsgálható csak az egyik vagy a másik oldalról, egyben túlontúl sok magyarázatot igényelne néhány elejtett, más dinasztiákra vonatkozó félmondat. Az olvasó másik felvetése az lehet, hogy miért e négy dinasztia szerepel e dolgozatban? Miért nem szerepelnek benne például a Ziyāridák vagy akár néhány síita fejedelemség, melyek szintén jelen voltak e régióban a vizsgált korban? Valamilyen magyarázatot igényel e 3 választás! Pontosan így van. A választás oka, hogy e négy dinasztia, a Dābūyidák, a Qārinwandok, a Bāwandidák és a Bādūspānidák, bár sokban különböznek egymástól, de egyvalamiben megegyeznek. Valószínűleg mindannyian a kései sāsānida arisztokrácia leszármazottai, sajátos történeti kontinuitást képezve a preiszlám Iránból a muszlim Perzsiába. E tény, ha figyelembe vesszük a koraközépkori Irán történelmét, nem túlságosan jellemző más történeti régiókban. Tabaristān ugyanúgy a muszlim oikumené részévé vált – de e folyamat itt jórészt más módon játszódott le. A helyi elit a kalifátus előtt és alatt a helyben maradt „ancien régime” túlélőiből tevődött össze. A terület periférikus mivoltából fakadóan ezek a dinasztiák nagyobbrészt folyamatosan megmaradtak, államiságai(k)nak és történeti szerepüknek sajátos tónust ad a történeti folyamatosság. Mindez nagyobbrészt megkülönbözteti őket az időről időre itt felbukkanó és egymást váltó esetenként óriási erőt képviselő hódító dinasztiáktól. A miértre még egy válasz adható az olvasónak. Ez pedig a szerző kíváncsisága. A témaválasztás során Tabaristān viszonylag kutatatlan témának tűnt. Az idevonatkozó másodlagos irodalom, ha e dinasztiákat nézzük és ha összevetjük más régiókéval, meglehetősen sovány. Sajnos – vagy nem sajnos. Mindez komoly szerepet játszott e téma kiválasztásában és megírásában. Természetesen egy téma megírását alapvetően determinálják a rendelkezésre álló források. Itt is ez történt. A rendelkezésre álló és időben már nemigen gyarapodó forrásállomány elsősorban az eseménytörténet, a hadtörténet, a történeti földrajz és a genealógia terén nyújt lehetőséget a további kutatásra. Bármennyire is érdekes lenne, például a korabeli Tabaristān társadalom- vagy gazdaságtörténetéről nagyívű tanulmányokat írni, mindez a meglevő (és a nem meglevő…) források fényében gyakorlatilag lehetetlen. Mert ilyen adatok csak meglehetősen szórványosan maradtak meg az utókorra. Amikor erre alkalom nyílik, akkor nem habozunk ezt megírni, de általános megállapításokat nemigen szerencsés tenni egy ilyen kis régió esetében. Mi maradt tehát? Egy átfogó eseménytörténeti munka megírása, mely magában foglalja mindazokat a problémákat, vitás kérdéseket, melyek e középkori iráni tartományban talán még megoldatlanok maradtak Két dolog lebegett szemünk előtt a dolgozat megírása alatt. 1. A négy dinasztia történetének legapróbb történeti, kultúrtörténeti és genealógiai kérdéseinek (re)interpretációja a rendelkezésre álló elsődleges és másodlagos irodalom, a történeti kútforrások, a régészet, az epigráfia, a numizmatika és a modern kutatás eredményeinek felhasználásával. Ez kétségtelenül a pozitivizmus felé terelte a dolgozat 4 irányát. Ám, ha a témára tekintünk és beleássuk magunkat, akkor csakhamar triviális kérdésekbe ütközünk. Mindez a téma viszonylagos érintetlenségéből fakad. Mindössze két olyan terület akad, ahol mára csaknem minden kérdés megoldódott vagy legalábbis tágas szakirodalom foglalkozik velük: a Dābūyida ispahbadok története és a qārinwand Māzyār szerepének értékelése. Mivel dolgozatunkban nem törekszünk az ismétlésre és sokadszor ugyanazt leírni, emiatt talán e két részlet rövidebb kifejtést kapott. 2. Az adott eseményeken során túl választ kerestünk arra is, milyen általános tendenciák figyelhetőek meg az események menetében, mindez hogyan hathatott ki a régióra, Tabaristānra és a vele szomszédos területekre? Vannak-e ismétlődő jelenségek vagy minden periódus más és más tanulsággal szolgál? E munka tehát elsősorban történeti kérdéseket vizsgál, és csak másodsorban igyekszik filológiai és egyéb problémákat megoldani. Bízunk benne, hogy egy-két apróságra választ adhattunk. 5 II. Az átírásról A dolgozat szövegében előforduló klasszikus arab, perzsa és modern perzsa szavakat az alábbi klasszikus átírási rendszert figyelembe véve írtuk át. According to this, a number of governments were established in the state of Azarbaijan that the extent of the influence and power of some of them was spread to Ardabil. Sajids, Al-Mosafer (passenger) and Ravvadian were among local governments in the Azarbaijan area. According to historical sources the author attempts to explain political developments in Ardabil as one of the areas of Azarbaijan in the period of local governments. The result indicates that given the formation of multiple local governments in the third to fifth centuries, the scope of their influence was spread to Ardabil. Therefore, Ardabil and other cities at some point in the history of local governments, has been witnessed some events. Rasim BOZBUĞA1 Abstract The main purpose of this paper is to review bibliography and investigate relevant information about Zazai tribe and Zaza people in order to explore pos- sible connection between them. Findings about Zazas and Zazai Pastun tribe indicate that these two groups have strong connection which is more than ha- ving phonological similar names. Moreover, religious, cultural, historical re- semblances point out that these two groups share some mutual characteristics. Indeed, it is strongly possible that these two groups have originated from same ancestors or same areas (i.e. greater Khorasan or Northern Iran). Abstracts Javad Abbasi Saint-Petersburg from the Perspective of Iranian Itineraries in 19th century Iran and Russia had critical and challenging relations in 19th century, well known by war, occupation and interfere from Russian side. Meantime 19th century was the era of Iranian’s involvement in European modernism and their curiosity for exploring new world. Consequently many Iranians, as official agents or explorers, traveled to Europe and Russia, including San Petersburg. Writing their itineraries, these travelers left behind a wealthy literature about their observations and considerations. San Petersburg, as the capital city of Russian Empire and also as a desirable station for travelers, was one of the most important destination for these itinerary writers. To the curious book of which the full title stands at the head of this article, I have already alluded in my communi- cation to the Journal of January, 1899, on The Sources of Dawlatshdh, pp. 51-53. I now propose to give such account of its contents as is possible within the limits here prescribed. For this purpose I have made use of the Cambridge Codex (belonging to the Burckhardt Collection) marked QQ. 225. Though the book is a rare one, at least three other manuscripts are known — two in the British Museum (see the old Arabic Catalogue, pp. 418 and 581)l and one (marked A. 1741) at Gotha. The last was used by Professor Noldeke, in his reference to the Nihayat, at pp. 475-476 of his excellent Geschichte . der Sasaniden. He describes it as "in the main a quite arbitrary recension of Dinawari, though here [namely, in the Romance of Bahrain Chubin] it had before it an essentially fuller text than this," and briefly characterizes it as " das seltsame, ziemlich schwindelhafte Werk."     Ancient Coins of the Silk Road A 20 Silver Coin Set The Silk Road is not a single road, but rather a network of routes extending from the Far East to Europe, including such storied cities as Alexandria, Tyre, Samarkand, Herat, and Xanadu. One cannot overstate the impact of the Silk Road on the cultural exchange between East and West. Trade along these routes—essentially a highway between two of the world’s largest empires (China and Rome) running through a third (Persia)—contributed to the cultural development of China, India, Persia, Arabia, north Africa, and all of Europe. The Silk Road became more than crude caravan tracks in the second century BCE, when Zhang Qian, an emissary of the Han Dynasty, made the trek across the deserts of western China and through the Hindu Kush mountains to what is today Afghanistan. Learning of new lands to the west, he convinced Emperor Wu to expand Chinese trade routes. By the time Marco Polo set upon his famous journey to Asia in 1271, the Silk Road was at its peak. Only when Vasco de Gama became the first explorer to sail around the Cape of Good Hope in the late fifteenth century did the Silk Road’s influence begin to wane, as Europeans traders took to the quicker, less dangerous sea route to India. The name “Silk Road,” coined by the German academic Ferdinand von Richthofen a century and a half ago, is somewhat inaccurate. Silk was not a major commodity until it became fashionable in Rome, where it was worth its weight in gold (The Roman Senate, in fact, tried to ban the material, on the grounds that its purchase was depleting the imperial gold reserves); by then, the Silk Road had been operating for centuries.

Providing political security of the region and establishing suitable condition for economic development was led to construct the multi- purpose garrisons in geographical spread of Tabaristan. The garrisons which are known as Maslaheh, Sakhloo and Zinestan in historical and geographical texts, were constructed in Tabaristan by Abul-Abbas Toussi- governor of Tabaristan- in Abbasid’ Caliphate. Their controlled geographical territory started in three area of plain, forest and mountain in Tamisheh which was located in the Eastern borderline of Tabaristan and ended to Chaloos in the West of this state. A number ofin garrisons Tabaristan are varying of 31,45, and 50 in local histories as well as geographical texts and 31 of them are identified. In this article attempted that by the means of historical and geographical sources has recognized the reasons of distribution as well as multidimensional functions of garrisons. With this objective in mind, I will compare and contrast the manners in which five different Arabophone authors, ʿAlī ibn Sahl Rabban al-Ṭabarī (d. ca. 860), al-Ḥasan ibn Ayyūb (fl. ca. mid-tenth century), Naṣr ibn Yaḥyā (d. 1163 or 1193), Yūsuf al-Lubnānī (d. ca mid-thirteenth century), and Anselm Turmeda (d. 1423), all Christian converts to Islam, utilized biblical and qurʾānic proof-texts alongside dialectical reasoning to invalidate the various tenets of Christianity while concurrently endorsing Islamic doctrine. These authors discuss a wide variety of contentious issues pervading medieval Christian-Muslim dialogue. Within the doctrinal sphere, these authors primarily discuss the Trinity and Incarnation, the nature of God, and the corruption of the Bible (taḥrīf). Within the exegetical realm, these authors primarily discussed miracles, prophecy, and prophetology. Moreover, this dissertation seeks to discern how these authors and their works can be properly contextualized within the larger framework of medieval Arabic polemical literature. That is to say, aside from parallels and correspondences with one another, what connections, if any, do these authors have with other contemporary Arabophone Muslim, Christian, and, to a lesser extent, Jewish apologists and polemicists? ii In the course of my research on Christian apostate literature, I have come to two primary conclusions.

As a historian of medieval Islam, Miskawayh did not clearly expound his philosophy of history in the works of Tajarib al-Umam. Employing textual interpretation and analysis method comprehensively and partially, this writing seeks to construct Miskawayh’s philosophy of history in the light of Tajarib al-Umam. The results of this analysis and interpretation show that the section on Miskawayh’s contemporary history is considered important for the philosophy of history as constructed by Miskawayh. There are three forms of historical development and stages in the section, i.e. formation and stability, weakness and restoration apart from brilliant achievement. These three forms and stages characterise the semi-cyclical concept history in Miskawayh’s philosophy of history. This concept indicates that Miskawayh was among the earlier Muslim historian who pioneered the cyclical form of philosophy of history and he thus preceded other Muslim historians such as Ibn Khaldun.
