Crohn's Disease and Diet
Crohn’s Disease and Diet What is Crohn’s Disease? Crohn’s disease is a condition that causes inflammation in the intestine. The symptoms of Crohn’s disease depend on the severity of the disease and what part of the intestine is affected. The most common symptoms are abdominal pain/cramping, diarrhea and fever. Can Diet Help? The following diet recommendations can help you to: Manage symptoms of Crohn’s disease Maintain normal bowel function Keep well nourished Diet Recommendations for Crohn’s Disease People living with Crohn’s disease often have periods of remission (mild or no symptoms) in addition to periods of flare-up (moderate or severe symptoms). The diet recommendations for Crohn’s disease depend on whether you are in a remission period or a flare- up period. Follow the diet recommendations that are appropriate for the period that you are in (see Flare-up Period or Remission Period below) . Flare-up Period When the small intestine is inflamed during a flare-up, the inside of the small bowel can become narrow. This can make it more difficult for high residue foods (i.e. bulky food or food with coarse Flare-up Period (continued) 1 particles) to pass through. High residue foods can therefore cause cramping or abdominal pain during a flare-up. It may help to follow a low-residue diet during this time. See Appendix 1 - Low Residue Diet for foods that are recommended. When your symptoms improve (i.e. you enter the remission period), you can start to add high residue foods back into your diet as tolerated. -

Mars Petcare Opens First Innovation Center in The
Contacts: Gregory Creasey (615) 807-4239 [email protected] MARS PETCARE OPENS FIRST INNOVATION CENTER IN THE UNITED STATES New $110 Million Gold LEED-Certified Campus Will Serve As Global Center of Excellence for Dry Cat and Dog Food THOMPSON’S STATION, TENN. (October 1, 2014) – Today Mars Petcare officially opened the doors of its new, state-of-the-art, Gold-LEED certified $110 million Global Innovation Center in Thompson’s Station, Tenn. The new campus, designed to help the company Make a Better World for Pets™ through pet food innovations, is the third Mars Petcare innovation center and first in the United States. It will serve as the global center of excellence for the company’s portfolio, which includes five billion dollar brands: PEDIGREE®, WHISKAS®, ROYAL CANIN®, BANFIELD® and IAMS®. The new center joins forces with similar Mars Petcare Global Innovation Centers located in Verden, Germany and Aimargues, France, and will focus on dry cat and dog food in both the natural and mainstream pet food categories. “Everything about this campus is dedicated to helping pets live longer and happier lives,” said Larry Allgaier, president of Mars Petcare North America. “Mars has been doing business in Tennessee for the past 35 years, employing nearly 1,700 Associates across our Petcare, Chocolate and Wrigley business segments. Our $110 million Global Innovation Center marks the sixth Mars site in Tennessee and will employ more than 140 Associates.” The location in Thompson’s Station was selected in part because of a great working relationship with the state of Tennessee, which is already home to Mars facilities in Cleveland, Chattanooga, Lebanon and Franklin (two locations). -
The Hershey Company and the Cocoa Controversy
Center for Ethical Organizational Cultures Auburn University http://harbert.auburn.edu The Hershey Company and The Cocoa Controversy INTRODUCTION Chocolate is enjoyed by millions, mainly in decadent desserts, candies, and drinks. It contains fiber, iron, magnesium, copper manganese, potassium, phosphorus, zinc and selenium, which are nutritional antioxidants. Dark chocolate, with at least 70% cocoa, is considered protective against heart disease because it can reduce blood pressure, improve blood flow, raise HDL cholesterol (known as the good cholesterol), and lower total LDL cholesterol, or less desirable cholesterol. In one study, it was shown to reduce calcified arterial plaque by 32%. Other studies indicate that long term consumption of dark chocolate may protect skin from sun damage and reduce the risk of cancer, help with cognitive function in elderly people, and improve brain blood flow, oxygen levels and nerve function. As science learns more about the health benefits of dark chocolate, its demand continues to grow. Developing countries are discovering that chocolate beans improve their sweet treats and candies, thus creating even greater worldwide demand. Cocoa beans grow mostly in tropical climates, mainly in Western Africa, Asia and Latin America, the largest exporters being Ghana and the Ivory Coast. With over $7.5 billion dollars in sales every year, the Hershey Company is one of the world’s largest producers of chocolate and candy products. Hershey’s products are sold in more than 70 countries and include Hershey’s Kisses and Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Bars as well as brands such as Reese’s, Whoppers, Almond Joy, and Twizzlers. Although Hershey strives to be a model company and has several philanthropic, social, and environmental programs, the company has struggled with ethical issues related to the labor issues associated with West African cocoa communities, including child labor. -
