This is the second time RBI has come out with the dollar-swap window this month. How does this dollar-swap work? RBI, in this case, is trying to replenish the dollars in the market. Banks have witnessed huge outflows of dollars as foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sell their shares. Since 24 February, they have been net sellers of Indian shares in all sessions and have sold $4.7 billion worth of such shares in the period. Reserve Bank pledges Rs 1 lakh crore in the battle against coronavirus RBI announced the infusion of ₹1 lakh crore into the system in phases, through the LTRO (long-term repo operations). LTRO (long-term repo operations) ? Under LTRO, RBI will conduct term repos of one-year and three-year tenors of appropriate sizes for up to a total amount of Rs 1 lakh crore at the current repo rate. Repos that have a specified maturity date (usually the following day or week) are term repo. A dealer sells securities to a counterparty with the agreement that he will buy them back at a higher price on a specific date. While the RBI’s current windows of liquidity adjustment facility (LAF) and marginal standing facility (MSF) offer banks money for their immediate needs ranging from 1-28 days, the LTRO supplies them with liquidity for their 1- to 3-year needs. LTRO operations are intended to prevent short-term interest rates in the market from drifting a long way away from the policy rate, which is the repo rate. RBI allows banks to put EMIs on hold for three months The Reserve Bank permitted all commercial banks (including regional rural banks, small finance banks and local area banks), co-operative banks, all-India Financial Institutions, and NBFCs (including housing finance companies and micro-finance institutions) (“lending institutions") are being permitted to allow a moratorium of three months on payment of instalments in respect of all term loans outstanding as on March 1, 2020. 3 MONTHLY DIGEST- CURRENT AFFAIRS CAPSULE-MARCH 2020 RBI announces fresh purchase of Rs 30,000 crore govt securities to boost liquidity The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced additional purchase of government securities worth Rs 30,000 crore through.12.2018 open market operations (OMO) to boost liquidity and enhance investor confidence in the financial markets that remain under stress over COVID-19 related disruptions. The central bank issued.2018 a statement on March 20 saying that it will conduct purchase of government securities under OMOs for an aggregate amount of Rs 30,000 crores in two tranches of Rs 15,000 crore each in the March 24 and March 30 2020. Open market operations or OMOs are conducted by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) by way of sale and purchase of G-Secs (government securities) to and from the market with an objective to adjust the rupee liquidity conditions in the market on a durable basis. When the Reserve Bank feels that there is excess liquidity in the market, it resorts to sale of securities thereby sucking out the rupee liquidity. Similarly, when the liquidity conditions are tight, RBI may buy securities from the market, thereby releasing liquidity into the market. RBI doubles the variable rate repo auction amount to ₹50,000 cr The Reserve Bank has doubled the amount of the 12-day variable rate term repo auction scheduled to Rs 50,000 crore.
