Libuše Lišková, M.A. This graduate thesis deals with comparison of two literary works, namely “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone“ by J.K. Rowling and „The Worst Witch“ by Jill Murphy. The aim of the theoretical part was to compare both works with respect to the settings, characters and plot. The research was divided into two parts. The aim of the first part was to find out students’ familiarity with both the works and their authors. The results are demonstrated in graphs as well as interpreted in text. The aim of the second part of the research was to find out what students like and dislike about main protagonists of given works. Seeing this for the first time at the age of eight back on the Disney Channel inI was blown away with the story and the actors in the movie. Balk, only a child at the time was a wonderful actress before she hit the big screens. She would later go on to do the sequel to the Wizard of Oz as Dorothy. A lot of the cast members in this movie went on to do other notable movies including The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe. Overall, a perfect Halloween movie for girls and boys. It's funny that Harry Potter has a lot of similar tones and scenes that are equal to the Worst Witch.

Read the opening from ‘The Worst Witch’ by Jill Murphy. Miss Cackle’s Academy for Witches stood at the top of a high mountain surrounded by a pine forest. It looked more like a prison than a school, with its gloomy grey walls and turrets. Sometimes you could see the pupils on their broomsticks flitting like bats above the playground wall, but usually the place was half hidden in mist, so that if you glanced up at the mountain you would probably not notice the building was there at all. Everything about the school was dark and shadowy: long, narrow corridors and winding staircases – and of course the girls themselves, dressed in black gymslips, black stockings, black hob-nailed boots, grey shirts and black-and-grey ties. Even their summer dresses were black-and-grey checked. The only touches of colour were the sashes around their gym slips – a different colour for each house – and the school badge, which was a black cat sitting on a yellow moon. There were so many rules that you couldn’t do anything without being told off, and there seemed to be tests and exams every week. 2.
