    Adventist Ecclesiology and THE ONE PROJECT Alex Bryan, D.Min. Walla Walla University Church Introduction Five years ago love for the church gave birth to an ecclesiological conversation, which has grown - and grown again - through the fellowship of something called THE ONE PROJECT. In this presentation I will, first and briefly, tell the story of this grassroots movement of Adventist Christians. Then, second, I will attempt an analysis of THE ONE PROJECT’S ecclesiological contribution and why this might be helpful for the church. Before moving on let me state the obvious: I am, as an actor in this particular story, in no way qualified to proffer a fully unbiased evaluation. I will, however, attempt a fair and even self-critical analysis. Story of THE ONE PROJECT In the autumn of 2009 I preached a series of sermons on the campus of Andrews University, where Pastor Japhet De Oliveira served as senior chaplain. There, in Berrien Springs, Michigan, I met Japhet for the first time, and we engaged in the first of what has turned out to be innumerable conversations. The theme of our dialogue: ecclesiology, the church. We discovered a shared passion and concern for our church. We acknowledged a mutual desire: that the church might enjoy a rich and meaningful future. And, in particular, we longed that emerging generations of young adults would fall in love with the church as we had. The following year, in the summer of 2010, we invited three pastoral colleagues to join us for a mini-retreat in Denver, Colorado. We spent two days together: praying, talking, laughing, crying - but most of all, dreaming about the church.

    Brooks, Charles Decatur (1930–2016) BENJAMIN BAKER Benjamin Baker, Ph.D. (Howard University, Washington, D.C.) is the author/editor of seven books and 150 articles and is the creator of two websites on Adventist history. He has taught history, religion, education, literature, and English at eight universities. Charles Decatur Brooks (universally known as “C. D. Brooks”) was one of the most successful evangelists of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and as speaker- director of Breath of Life Ministries for twenty-three years was a trailblazer of religious media. Early Life Charles Decatur (C. D.) Brooks was born in Morehead Township, just outside of Greensboro, North Carolina, on July 24, 1930, to Marvin Bishop Brooks and Mattie (née Reives) Brooks (1886-1967; 1889-1959).1 Marvin and Mattie Brooks would have sixteen children in all, ten girls and six boys, four of whom died before C. D. was born. The Brooks earned a livelihood by farming their 40-acre property in Morehead, cultivating a C. D. Brooks 2 variety of crops and raising livestock and poultry. Next to the fundamental proclamation that God is the Creator (Gen 1Ð2), the Lord is presented as the Judge: In the Garden of Eden there is the first reference to the trial judgment (Gen 3:8Ð24),1 where the grace and justice of God are intermingled.2 The biblical Flood narrative is an account about judg- ment (Gen 6Ð9).3 Abraham called God Òthe Judge of all the earthÓ (Gen 18:25).
