72ND STUDENT SENATE Senate Resolution

Whereas: Supreme Court Justice passed away on September 18th, 2020 at the age of 87, and

Whereas: Ruth Bader Ginsburg served as the second woman ever appointed to the Supreme Court, and

Whereas: Ruth Bader Ginsburg fought for queer rights, women’s rights, civil rights, and a litany of other human rights, and

Whereas: Ruth Bader Ginsburg joined the majority opinion of the Supreme Court in Frontiero v. Richardson securing equal rights for women to estates, in Weinberger v. Wiesenfeld to give widowers equal rights to widows, in v. Virginia striking down the legal view of women as inferior, and joined the majority in other cases protecting the rights of so many minority communities, and

Whereas: Ruth Bader Ginsburg lived her life as one of the greatest women and one of the greatest Americans in American history,

Be it resolved by the Seventy-second Student Senate at State University that: the Student Body of gives our deepest condolences to the family of Ruth Bader Ginsburg and thank her for her lifetime commitment to human rights, and

Be it further resolved that: the Student Senate will commit itself to following the ideals of Ruth Bader Ginsburg and will fight to carry on the legacy she has left, and

Be it further resolved that: the Student Senate of Florida State University urges Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to respect RBG’s last wishes and wait for the next inauguration to confirm a new Supreme Court Justice in accordance with Senate precedent set after the death of Justice Antonin Scalia in 2016.

Be it further resolved that: a copy of this resolution be sent to the following:
