Lasswade High School S6 2020-2021 S6 Welcome to S6 Welcome back to sixth year. Since this is your last year at school, it’s essential to begin now to think about what you are going to do in the future. This book contains career planning resources which everyone can use this year. As the Careers Advisers in school we are here to give you information and advice about the options open to you. Help from Skills Development Scotland If you need help to decide what to do when you leave school, you should, as a starting point, register on Skills Development Scotland’s website My World of Work at www.myworldofwork.co.uk. Use the online tools and quizzes on the website, under My Career Options, to help identify areas of study or employment, which might suit you. The website can also give you lots of useful information on applications, CVs, interviews, jobs, college and university. If you are still undecided about what to do or would like to discuss your options, please speak to your Student Support Teacher, who can refer you to us for a face to face interview in school. Even if you don’t ask for an interview, we may speak to you to check on your plans or your Student Support Teacher may refer you to us, if they feel it would be helpful for you to have an interview. Students in SL and MK can speak to Judy Tyler in school or contact her at [email protected]. Students in SA and ME can speak to Nicola Powell in school or contact her at [email protected]. The school will give you information about how to register on the website and the timeline for your application. You will be given deadline dates by which you have to submit the draft and final versions of your Personal Statement. Your UCAS Personal Statement gives you the opportunity to explain to universities why you are interested in studying your chosen subject. Before beginning your Personal Statement you have to decide on your chosen courses. To reach this decision it’s important to research thoroughly the subjects, courses and universities which interest you. Attending university Open Days is an essential part of this process. Use the Higher Education Open Days 2020 information in this booklet to plan and book your visits. Most universities are holding virtual open days this year because of COVID 19 restrictions, but you still need to register to attend. You can also go to the Higher Education Exhibition, in Edinburgh on 5th November, to speak to representatives of universities from through the UK. School arranges transport to this event. It is possible this event may not go ahead or become a virtual event because of COVID restrictions. School staff will keep you informed. Use UCAS’s information on What to Study to help with making your choice of course. There’s also information for your parents/carers on the Undergraduate Application Process and on how they can support you with your application. Remember you can speak to a Careers Adviser in school if you want to discuss your choice of subjects and courses. Writing your Personal Statement Allow yourself plenty of time to write a good UCAS Personal Statement. Universities will decide to make you an offer based on your statement as well as your exam results. Being able to demonstrate your interest in and knowledge of the subject for which you are applying is vital. This is particularly important for courses where there is strong competition for places. If you are applying for a vocational, job specific, course you will need to explain clearly in your Personal Statement why you are interested in the job the course might lead to, as well as the course itself. It’s important to be able to write about relevant work experience you have undertaken, to explain what you have learned about the job and why you feel you are suited to it. For some subjects, eg medicine or vet medicine a wide range of work experience/work shadowing is essential. Read UCAS’s guide on How to Write a UCAS Undergraduate Personal Statement before you begin. There’s also advice on Writing your Personal Statement on the My World of Work website. Higher Education Open Days 2020 The majority of open days are virtual on-line events.
