Newsletter – January 2017 Number XXV A Gorgeous Garden of Dreams: The Gateway Theater Logan Square This past year, the Northwest Chicago Historical Society was proud that Jefferson Park and Portage Park were chosen to showcase venues in Open House Chicago, an annual architectural festi- val organized by the Chicago Architecture Foundation. Multiple establishments on the Northwest side opened their door for the very first time to host curious guests from all over the country. The venues included the Copernicus Center, Carl Schurz High School, the Jefferson Masonic Temple, the Rivoli Theater, Our Lady of Victory, Portage Arts Lofts, and the Portage Theater. Over 100,000 people partici- pated this year, making it one of the largest events of its kind in the world. We hope that we are able to continue to bring more people into the area to visit our historical and cultural heritage. In our most recent newsletter issues, members were most excited about the movie theater pic- tures, so this issue continues on that theme. This time, we feature the Kobelinski Theater, a theater inside the Copernicus Center that has been redeveloped into a cultural venue and multi-event complex. At one time, this was called the Gateway Theater, and it was the largest movie palaces on the Northwest Side. Since the Copernicus Center purchased the Gateway, they transformed the lobby and outside mar- quee to be more reflective of its current usage. However, the community is fortunate that they saved the theater from the wrecking ball and have beautifully preserved the historic, decorative interior. While the venue now is mostly used for live performances, the center also hosts many multi-cultural and neighbor- hood events. -

Landmarks Preservation Commission April 15, 1997, Designation List 279 LP-1891 LOEW'S PARADISE THEATER, 2401-2419 Grand Concourse, aka 2394-2408 Creston Avenue, Borough of the Bronx. Built 1928-29; John Eberson, architect. Landmark Site: Borough of the Bronx Tax Map Block 3165, Lot 44. On June 2, 1992, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the Loew's Paradise Theater, and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 7). 1 The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Five speakers testified in favor of the proposed designation; there were no speakers opposed to designation. The current owner is not opposed to this designation. Summary Located on the Grand Concourse south of Fordham Road, once a major theater center of the Bronx, the Loew's Paradise Theater is the borough's largest and most famous movie palace. Designed by theater architect John Eberson and opened in 1929, the 4000-seat Paradise was one of five so-called "Wonder Theaters" built for the New York-based Loew's chain of movie theaters to serve the major metropolitan population centers outside midtown Manhattan. John Eberson, who Loew's Paradise Theater c. 1997 created the "atmospheric theater" type, was one of America's most prolific and influential theater designers, and the Paradise was among his most important commissions. With its Italian Baroque-inspired facade, typical of the romantic fantasies of the great movie palaces of the period, the Paradise delighted and served the people of the Bronx for over sixty years. -

On April 18, 2006 the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the Loew’s Paradise Theater Interior (Item 4). The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with provisions of law. Two witnesses, including representatives of the Historic Districts Council and the Art Deco Society, spoke in support of designation. The Commission previously held public hearings on Loew’s Paradise Theater Interior (LP-1922) on July 19, 1994 (Item 1) and October 19, 1995 (Item 1). -

Built 1928; John Eberson, architect. Landmark Site: Borough of Queens Tax Map Block 9795, Lot 3. On February 23, 1999, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the (former) Loew' s Valencia Theater (now Tabernacle of Prayer for All People), and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 2). The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law . Two speakers, representing the Queens Historical Society and the Historic Districts Council, testified in favor of the proposed designation; there were no speakers opposed to designation. Letters in favor of designation have been received from the building's owner, and from the Queens Borough President and the Friends of Terra Cotta. Summary Located on Jamaica Avenue at Merrick Boulevard in Jamaica, the major commercial center of the borough of Queens and once a major theater center for Queens and Long Island, the Loew' s Valencia is the borough's largest and most famous remaining movie palace. Designed by theater architect John Eberson and opened in 1929, the 3554-seat Valencia was the first of five so-called "Wonder Theaters" built for the New York-based Loew' s chain of movie theaters to serve the major metropolitan population centers outside midtown Manhattan. Movie theatres of the interwar 'picture palace' era were designed to create an atmosphere of leisure, fantasy and escapism, qualities which continue to inform understandings of these places in ruins. Movie theatre ruins have a heightened quality of excess, both in terms of their original atmosphere of fantasy, and their obsolescence as ruins. Theatre ruins are vital entities, sites of temporal flux and multiple, intersecting narratives provoking strong affective responses. This narrative potential is investigated using the Midnight Star theatre in suburban Sydney as a case study. Drawing on the theatre's material presence and media traces, this article explores the narrative and critical power of the theatre ruin in the contemporary urban landscape. Keywords: ruins; cinema; memory; temporality; derelict architecture The Midnight Star, an abandoned movie theatre on the major thoroughfare of Parramatta Road, Sydney, is one of the city's most striking and persistent ruins. A place of pause amid the streetscape, it is a site for observation, reflection and speculation. It is one of a few remaining of the once plentiful suburban movie theatres constructed during the peak "picture palace" period in the 1920s and 30s. These theatres were hubs of social life and leisure, part of everyday life and routines as they were also spaces of otherness, of fantasy and transformation.
