  • Heisman Trivia
Heisman Trivia HEISMAN.COM @HEISMANTROPHY 318 Did you know...? Some Facts about the Heisman Trophy • Designed by sculptor Frank Eliscu in 1934, the Heisman Trivia Trophy is modeled after Ed Smith, Eliscu’s former high school classmate and star running back for the now defunct New York University football team. • Regarding the Heisman Memorial Trophy, Frank Eliscu said, "It is not my best work but it turned out to be something like the Statue of Liberty. I always thought it was wonderful that I'll be able to leave something like this behind." Eliscu continued working until he passed away from a heart attack in 1996. • The trophy is made of cast bronze, stands 13.5 inches (34.3 cm) tall and weighs 25 pounds (11.3 kg). • The first Heisman Trophy was awarded to Chicago’s Jay Berwanger in 1935. Initially, it was known then as the Down- town Athletic Club Award. After John Heisman, the legend- ary college coach and DAC athletics director, succumbed to pneumonia in 1936, the award was renamed in his honor. • Initially, the Downtown Athletic Club Award was given to, "the best college football player, east of the Mississippi." Once the award was renamed the Heisman Trophy, the geographical limitations were removed and players of all col- leges, from coast to coast, were eligible to win the award. • In 1935 Jay Berwanger did not have any room in his home for the trophy and gave it to his Aunt. Berwanger’s aunt was not familiar with college football and did not realize that the trophy meant her nephew was the best player in college football, so she used it as an extravagant doorstop.

  • 2020 International League Field Managers Eight Il Clubs to Be Led by New Skippers This Season
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 11, 2020 2020 INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE FIELD MANAGERS EIGHT IL CLUBS TO BE LED BY NEW SKIPPERS THIS SEASON When the International League's 137th season opens on April 9, eight of the circuit’s fourteen teams will have a new manager leading the quest to capture the coveted Governors’ Cup trophy. Only six managers return from the 2019 season, although several of the League’s new field generals bring pre-existing ties to their teams and communities. It is the first time since 2006 that more than half of the circuit’s clubs changed managers during an offseason. The reining IL Manager of the Year Damon Berryhill is the International League’s longest- tenured manager, preparing to begin his fourth season at the helm of the Gwinnett Stripers. Also hoping to get his team back to the postseason is Brady Williams, who took Durham to the finals in his first year with the Bulls in 2019. They will be challenged in the South Division by another returning manager in Norfolk, Gary Kendall. The 2018 IL Manager of the Year, Lehigh Valley’s Gary Jones, will lead the IronPigs once again this season. Like Jones, Brian Esposito in Indianapolis is also at the helm for the third straight campaign. IL Hall of Famer Billy McMillon will manage the Red Sox for the franchise’s final season at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket. Two men have found themselves moving from a coach’s role to the manager’s chair in 2020. Pennsylvania-native Doug Davis (former Syracuse manager) takes over in Scranton/Wilkes- Barre after three seasons coaching, while in Columbus, Ohio-native Andy Tracy is the new manager after helping lead the Clippers to the 2019 Governors’ Cup title as hitting coach.

My Drift Title: Mark Harmon Written by: Jerry D. Petersen Date: 15 October 2019 Article Number: 319-2019-17 Besides Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune and most all Sports, the two regular TV shows I like to watch are NCIS and Criminal Minds. I decided to write this article about someone from these shows and I picked Mark Harmon because I find his life to be the most interesting. Family Thomas Mark Harmon was born in Burbank, California on September 2, 1951, which makes him 68 years old. He was the youngest of three children. His parents were Heisman Trophy–winning football player and broadcaster Tom Harmon and actress, model, artist, and fashion designer Elyse Knox. Harmon’s two older sisters are the late actress and painter Kristin Nelson, who was divorced from the late singer Rick Nelson, and actress and model Kelly Harmon, formerly married to car magnate John DeLorean. Yes, Mark’s dad was a famous football player at the Mark Harmon’s Parents University of Michigan. He played the halfback position Tom Harmon and wife from 1938 to 1940. He led the nation in scoring and was Elyse Knox a consensus All-American in both 1939 and 1940 and won the Heisman Trophy, the Maxwell Award, and the Associated Press Athlete of the Year award in 1940. His nickname was "Old 98" which I find somewhat unusual for a halfback! He played in the NFL for the Los Angeles Rams for a couple of seasons. He was also a military pilot and a sports broadcaster. He died at age 70 in Los Angeles.

  • Historic Toledo Buildings That Have Been Demolished Or Altered Toledo, Like Most Modern Cities Has Lost Its Share of Early Historic Landmarks
Lost Landmarks: Historic Toledo Buildings That Have Been Demolished or Altered Toledo, like most modern cities has lost its share of early historic landmarks. This exhibit remembers a few of the most notable that are long gone or altered. Each page offers a turn-of-the-century postcard or view with a photograph that duplicates (as closely as possible) the postcard view. Commercial, industrial, public, residential, natural and recreational sites are featured. This feature was based on an exhibit of early postcards presented by the Ward M. Canaday Center in 1993 entitled, "Wish You Were Here!" This exhibit was funded by a grant from the Ohio Humanities Council. A primary resource for the original exhibition's text was William D. Speck's 1983 thesis entitled, "Lost Toledo: A Study of Demolished Architecture in Toledo, Ohio." The Columbia University student of Historic Preservation documented 156 "historically significant" structures that had been destroyed or significantly altered. All of the modern photographs were taken by William Hartough of the University of Toledo's Public Information Office. 405 Madison Avenue (at St. Clair Street) E. Townsend Mix, Architect, French Second Empire, 1872-1928 A symbol of Toledo's post-Civil War prosperity, the Boody House Hotel was named for Azariah Boody, a major investor and railroad owner. The $300,000 hotel was equipped with the turn-of- the-century's most modern amenities: a passenger elevator, sinks with hot and cold running water in each room, and a bathroom on every floor. As Toledo's largest hotel, the Boody soon became the social center of the city.

The UCLA baseball program has sent eight players to play for the USA Baseball National Team a total of 10 times, beginning with the selection of Shane Mack in 1984. Most recently, former UCLA shortstop Brandon Crawford helped the U.S. National Team capture its second consecutive FISU (International University Sports Federation) World Championship in the summer of 2006. Crawford’s selection in 2006 marked the first time a Bruin had been named since Karp, a right-handed pitcher, competed for the national team in 2000. The 2006 U.S. National Team finished its summer campaign with a 28-2-1 mark and successfullyl defended its gold medal won in the 2004 FISU Tournament in Taiwan.
