The 1963 Berlin Philharmonie – a Breakthrough Architectural Vision
PRZEGLĄD ZACHODNI I, 2017 BEATA KORNATOWSKA Poznań THE 1963 BERLIN PHILHARMONIE – A BREAKTHROUGH ARCHITECTURAL VISION „I’m convinced that we need (…) an approach that would lead to an interpretation of the far-reaching changes that are happening right in front of us by the means of expression available to modern architecture.1 Walter Gropius The Berlin Philharmonie building opened in October of 1963 and designed by Hans Scharoun has become one of the symbols of both the city and European musical life. Its character and story are inextricably linked with the history of post-war Berlin. Construction was begun thanks to the determination and un- stinting efforts of a citizens initiative – the Friends of the Berliner Philharmo- nie (Gesellschaft der Freunde der Berliner Philharmonie). The competition for a new home for the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra (Berliner Philharmonisches Orchester) was won by Hans Scharoun whose design was brave and innovative, tailored to a young republic and democratic society. The path to turn the design into reality, however, was anything but easy. Several years were taken up with political maneuvering, debate on issues such as the optimal location, financing and the suitability of the design which brought into question the traditions of concert halls including the old Philharmonie which was destroyed during bomb- ing raids in January 1944. A little over a year after the beginning of construction the Berlin Wall appeared next to it. Thus, instead of being in the heart of the city, as had been planned, with easy access for residents of the Eastern sector, the Philharmonie found itself on the outskirts of West Berlin in the close vicinity of a symbol of the division of the city and the world. -

Diego Matheuz Belongs to the First Generation of Outstanding Musicians Emerging from Venezuela’S El Sistema
Saverio Clemente Andrea De Amici Luca Targetti Diego Matheuz belongs to the first generation of outstanding musicians emerging from Venezuela’s El Sistema. With a busy conducting career in Europe, Asia, Australia, Latin and North America he has firmly established himself on the international circuit. Indeed, the English magazine Gramophone singled him out as one of ten “Icons of Tomorrow” as early as in 2011. At the age of 35, he can already look back at fruitful periods as principal conductor of La Fenice in Venice, principal guest conductor – upon Claudio Abbado’s invitation – of the Orchestra Mozart Bologna, and as principal guest conductor of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. His most notable concerts with international media coverage include two of La Fenice’s celebrated New Year’s Concerts, shown worldwide on RAI. German national television ZDF made a live broadcast of the ECHO Klassik Gala 2016 featuring Diego Matheuz and the Konzerthausorchester Berlin accompanying Anna Netrebko, Olga Peretyatko and Philippe Jaroussky. A particularly significant moment for him was the “Tokyo Gala Concert” celebrating the 120 year anniversary of Deutsche Grammophon at Suntory Hall in December 2018, which was released on CD a few weeks later. On this occasion, Diego exchanged the baton with Seiji Ozawa and conducted the Saito Kinen Orchestra and soloist Anne-Sophie Mutter in works by Beethoven and Tchaikovsky. The Moscow Philharmonic streamed a Puccini-Gala with Sonya Yoncheva, Diego Matheuz and the Svetlanov Symphony Orchestra at Diego Matheuz the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall in November 2019 live on its website and Conductor shared the broadcast with Mezzo. -

Announcing New Season (2020-21) Subscription Concert Programs
February 25, 2020 Announcing new season (2020-21) subscription concert programs Subscription concert programs for the 2020-21 season (September 2020 to June 2021) have been finalized. The NHK Symphony Orchestra will proudly present concerts with quintessential programs unique to us with world’s finest conductors and soloists. Paavo Järvi, who unfolds free and unrestrained performances more than ever in his 6th season as Chief Conductor, will appear on our podium in September, February and June. In the opening concert of the new season, he will conduct Mahler’s monumental Symphony No. 3. While continuing to present works of Bruckner, Bartók and Shostakovich, he will conduct, for the first time since becoming Chief Conductor, a Schumann symphony, the interpretation of which, he has been highly regarded for. In October, Herbert Blomstedt, Honorary Conductor Laureate, will be conducting concerts in a variety of programs including a work of Brahms, one of his favorite composers, works by Northern European composers for which he has gained reputation as a conductor of Swedish origin, and a work of Dvořák. The lineups of programs by guest conductors are also outstanding and will truly measure up to your expectations, including Mahler Symphony No. 6 Tragische conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas, the great American conductor, in his first appearance with the NHK Symphony Orchestra in November, followed by Shostakovich Symphony No. 13 Babi Yar, by Michiyoshi Inoue, a leading authority on the composer, which he will present with a prestigious Swedish male chorus and then Tchaikovsky The Sleeping Beauty ballet suite by a leading Russian conductor Vladimir Fedoseyev by his own arrangement in December.
