Today’s third session starts at 10am and will involve the cream of the catalogue. ONELINER ONLINE FOR STAR COLT An online bid for a Sea The Stars colt (Lot 718) led to a session- topping purchase at day two of Tattersalls’ December Foal Sale. The buyer, Gerard Lowry of Oneliner Stables, was present at the sales complex, but opted to give the technology a try and with a button press at 170,000gns secured the prize. His purchase was another repayment for breeder Graham Smith-Bernal, who bought the colt’s dam, the mare La Mortola, for 350,000gns via agent Jill Lamb at this sale in 2017. La Mortola is a half-sister to nine successful foals, including Jakkalberry, Crackerjack King and Awelmarduk, who were all Gr.1 winners in Italy, out of the Barathea mare Claba Di San Jore, but she inherited little of their racing ability, and, in a brief and moderate career from ’s stable, she failed to add to Gerard Lowry of Oneliner Stables (Ce) the family laurels. Her owner/breeders, the Lloyd-Webbers of Watership Down Stud, opted to cull her and, after a cover by “He is a lovely mover and was our pick of the day. “He wouldn’t have looked out of a place at tomorrow’s session [which contains the pick of the catalogue].” Julian Dollar, stud manager at Newsells Park Stud, said: “We had two Sea The Stars colts to sell tomorrow and decided it was best to split them up, although we’ve done well with the horses we’ve offered on Thursday evening. Group 1 winning son © Tattersalls.com of Dubawi and €12,000 WARRIOR FOAL FOR HYDE Contact us to discuss terms Camas Park Stud’s Tim Hyde signed for the week’s first six-figure foal, a 160,000gns son of Saxon Warrior (Lot 603) who was consigned by Highclere Stud. A son of the Listed-winning Canford Cliffs mare Aktoria, the colt will be reoffered next year, commented Hyde, and with half- sisters by Sea The Stars and Oasis Dream to run, there could well be an update in the pipeline. Much later in the session Hyde picked up Lot 747, another colt by the Coolmore sire, this one consigned by Glashare House Stud and knocked down for 100,000gns. Lady Carolyn Warren of Highclere Stud said the sale was due reward for longtime breeders Leonidas and Marina Marinopolous and partners, and she said of the colt: “What a wonderful example of Saxon Warrior’s stock. He [the foal] is a gorgeous horse with a great temperament, and all credit to his sire.” She added: “It is amazing what Tattersalls have done to put the show on. It is a huge well done and thanks to Edmond and the team.” Moments later another colt joined the six-figure selection, this one a son of Tally-Ho Stud’s Kodiac (Lot 610) who was knocked down to Roger O’Callaghan from that same Kildare farm. His bid of 110,000gns was a fine return on the advertised covering fee of

€65,000 for breeder Max Ervine, who is based in County Down, FIRST and who calls upon consignors Keith and Eileen Harte to sell his FOALS 2021 horses. At Book 3 of the October Sale, the Hartes and Ervine teamed up to sell a colt for 130,000gns, a valuation which four yearlings shared to head the event. A son of the Iffraaj mare Fine If, the 110,000gns foal is a grandson of Refined, whose six successful foals included the high-class Galeota and a clutch of other black-type performers or producers. Keith said: “It’s another example of a lovely foal from Max’s farm. He only has five or six mares and this was a cracking Kodiac. We had a lot of interest in him from all the top buyers. “I am lucky enough to sell Max’s yearlings and the occasional foal. He had a good yearling sale, but no one knew how the sales would go, so he put this colt in this foal sale and decided to let him take his chance. It’s paid off. “Fine If is barren this year so Max is busy thinking of an early cover for her.” Reflecting on trade, Harte said: “Footfall has fallen dramatically if you don’t have the right horse. Those people in the middle market that speculate and take a risk are not doing so. They are trying to eliminate the risk now; they won’t take a risk on sires, non-performing mares and even on the individuals. The ones that are right are wanted by everyone.” GREY DAY DAZZLER FOR WHITSBURY It is not often that Ed Harper of Whitsbury Manor Stud is lost for words, but after selling a Havana Grey colt (Lot 741) for 130,000gns he was clearly shocked. In a refreshing piece of honesty by a stallion master, Harper did not mind admitting that he had never expected such a sum for a colt whose sire entered the Whitsbury stallion roster last year at a fee of £8,000, and whose dam, the Compton Place mare Visit YEOMANSTOWN.IE for more Satsuma, had been bought privately for small money. She has repaid that faith with three winners, including the Gr.3 Cornwallis Standing alongside: CAMACHO, DARK ANGEL, Stakes winner Good Vibes (Due Diligence). EL KABEIR and SHAMAN Her latest foal, a well-built grey colt, walked the ring looking almost ready for the racecourse, but no less startling for Harper was the identity of the buyer – not one of the many habitual pinhookers who stood admiringly by the ring, but expatriate Naas, Co. “Good Vibes has been great for the mare and the Havana Greys have gone so well. Everybody has come to see them here at the sale and they are going to good homes, so I’m really pleased, but I never expected one to make that much. I thought he might make six figures on a very, very good day, but today... “This market is very tough, but this shows that if you get the right model you will be well rewarded.” STAUFFENBERG RETURNS TO MILL HOUSE Philipp Stauffenberg struck lucky when buying a Cable Bay filly foal for 10,000gns from Juliet Minton’s Mill House Stud in 2017. A noted pinhooker, Stauffenberg opted to keep his purchase, gave her the name Belle Anglaise and was rewarded when she won twice as a two-year-old for Stuart Williams. Subsequently she was beaten just a couple of lengths in a Gr.3 on the Rowley Mile Lot 741, a first-crop son of Whitsbury Manor Stud’s and this year she gained a Listed place in Germany. Without Parole returned to his place of birth at Newsells Park Stud on Tuesday ahead of taking up stud duties for 2021, when he will stand at a fee of £10,000. © Melanie Sauer

Arriving on Tuesday from America, Gr.1 St James’s Palace Stakes hero was returning to his place of birth at Newsells Park Stud where staff welcomed him, excited to be involved in the next chapter of his career as he joins the stallion ranks. In a webinar arranged by GBRI, owner-breeder Tanya Gunther was equally excited for his return and said: “It was such a natural decision to come back here. To have him stand in the country where Frankel stands, where he was born and raised, and also where we have some of our mares, it’s just such a natural fit and we’re really excited about it.” Julian Dollar, General Manager at Newsells Park Stud, confirmed the new addition had settled in well. Having bred stallions such as Justify, Tamarkuz, Mo Town and Vino Rosso already, Gunther said: “My Dad doesn’t have a very big broodmare band and to have that many stallions come off the farm is really exciting. Then to branch out and have Without Parole in Europe, we hope he’s the first of more. I just dream about having Without Parole baby racehorses and thinking about Royal Ascot again –not to aim too big or anything, but how exciting would that be!” Gunther also confirmed that she will be supporting the recent retiree with their own mares, including mares from the US, as well as the prospect of some Tattersalls December Mare Sale purchases which may add to his book. Current mares lined up for a cover include bloodlines from Selkirk, Scat Daddy and Medaglia D’Oro, a Street Cry half-sister to Stage Magic (dam of Justify), who produced the highest-priced yearling by Tamarkuz, Without Parole’s half-brother, at this year’s Keeneland Yearling Sale for $280,000, and the dam of the Gr.3 winner Policy Of Truth, who was fourth in the Gr.1 Critérium International, amongst others. Dollar confirmed that “having followed the horse since the day he was born”, they would also be supporting the son of Frankel with a number of top performers and producers, among them such as dual US Gr.1 winner Dynaforce, dam of the Frankel Listed winner Aljazeera, who was also runner-up in the Gr.2 Park Hill Stakes, and dual winner As Good As Gold, whose Frankel yearling recently sold to Godolphin for 480,000gns at the Tattersalls October Sale Book 1. Without Parole has some breeding rights available, with a number of breeders already expressing an interest in taking up the option. The plan is for the stallion to be available for viewing next week at The National Stud, as long as the globetrotter settles well in the coming days.

THIS WEEK’S HEADLINES MALMOOS SOARS IN THE CONCORDE Sheikh Hamdan’s star three-year-old Malmoos (Captain Al) is on track for the Cape Guineas following his workmanlike victory in the Gr.2 Concorde Cup over 1600m at Kenilworth. Racing over a left-handed track for the first time, the unbeaten three-year-old sat just off the pace and, when given his head, smoothly moved into the lead inside the final 200m. So dominant in his previous starts, he was this time made to work for a half-length victory over Linebacker (Captain Of All), who applied pressure to the line. Trainer Mike de Kock remarked afterwards that his R4.4 million yearling purchase is still a work in progress.
