Just One Month Left to Submit a Paper or Poster for Entomology 2013

The abstract submission site is open for regular and student competition ten-minute oral presentations and posters. Plan early and get funding for this exciting meeting in Austin, Texas. ESA expects more than 3,000 entomologists to attend Entomology 2013, scheduled for November 10-13, where you can share your research with thousands of entomologists from around the world. The submission deadline is Monday, June 3. Please note that for Entomology 2013, a speaker may present up to two invited (e.g. symposia) oral presentations OR one invited and one submitted oral presentation. Report from ESA's Liaison to the EPA

Dr. Mark Whalon, ESA's Subject Matter Expert and Liaison to the U.S. EPA Office of Pesticide Programs, has submitted his second report about meetings with EPA officials. The report includes meetings with the Insecticide Resistance Action Committee (IRAC), and other EPA staff about neonicotinoids and their effects on and birds, and on issues surrounding flonicamid 9c (IUPAC: N-cyanomethyl-4-(trifluoromethyl) a nicotinamide with efficacy on aphids, whiteflies, plant bugs, plant hoppers and scale insects. Submit Your Special Events/Function Requests Today for Entomology 2013

Do you have a group event you’d like to hold in Austin during the ESA Annual Meeting? Special events and related meetings are encouraged during Entomology 2013. Based on the type of event and date requested, signage, AV equipment, and other support services may be available at no charge to universities and other non-profits hosting these events. Call for Teams for 2013 Student Debates

The ESA Student Affairs Committee proudly announces this year’s Student Debate theme for Austin, “Scientific Issues that Arise from a Connected World”. The Debates have become increasingly popular over the last few years with higher attendance and more recognition. They are fun and professionally rewarding. Organize your university team early this year -- the nine student team slots will fill up fast. The teams will be selected on a first-come, first- served basis. Call for Volunteers to Judge 2013 Student Debates

Judges are needed for the 2013 Student Debates. The Student Debate Committee is looking for unbiased students, early professionals, and seasoned professionals to participate in judging panels in Austin. Nine university-sponsored teams will be involved in debating three specific topics on scientific issues. The time commitment is the duration of three debates, which is estimated at three hours (including breaks). If you are interested in helping out with judging these debates, please go to ESA’s Volunteer Form and select “Annual Meeting Student Debate Judge." Click here to volunteer.

National Moth Week is July 20-28

Citizen scientists around the world will be setting up white sheets and lights in backyards, woods and fields July 20-28 for the second annual National Moth Week, a global science project begun last year to encourage the public to observe and document one of nature’s most diverse and misunderstood creatures. Submit Virtual Posters for Entomology 2013

If you are located outside of the U.S. and cannot attend Entomology 2013 in person, you can still present your work and reach thousands of entomologists. ESA’s Virtual Posters allow you to submit your presentation online, and attendees at ESA's Annual Meeting can view your research via the Internet and ask you questions. Apurba Barman is New AgriLife Extension Entomologist Apurba Barman has been named the new AgriLife extension entomologist by Texas A&M University’s department of entomology and the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service. Full article.

Lauren Weidner Studies Blow Flies and Crime Scenes Lauren Weidner, a Rutgers graduate student in entomology, studies maggots in her lab. And according to this article, her research in the growing field of forensic entomology could make her the state’s most unlikely crime fighter. Full article.

In Memoriam: Richard C. Back Richard C. Back, 91, died peacefully March 31, 2013, at the Masonic Care Community in Utica, NY, with his family at his side. Richard had previously resided in Irvington, NY, Washington, DC, Jacksonville, FL, and Raleigh, NC. Full article.
