9 The Broad Hinton, Uffcott and Winterbourne Bassett Local News August 2021 MAJOR UPDATE

Major is a well-known member of the village, especially to those in the doggy community. He lives in Pitchens End with Sue and Jack Hobbs who have lived in the village for over 20 years and are regular contributors to village causes.

Major was saved from a cruel life as a stray on the streets of Spain, where he sustained a severe leg injury after being hit by a car.

He then found his forever home with Sue and Jack.

Over time, his leg has deteriorated which is now causing him considerable daily pain and is having a huge impact on his quality of life.

Sue and Jack have taken the brave decision to go ahead with surgery to replace his broken and damaged bones with a bespoke metal implant. This will ensure a good quality of life for his remaining years.

Thank you to everyone who has donated to his crowdfunding page so far, we have raised an amazing £887

We are still some way from achieving the £6000 costs to support Sue & Jack.

Please, if you are able, any donations to his page would be gratefully received. www.justgiving.com and search leg4major

JOHN TAYLOR 1929-2021

John Taylor from the Old Vicarage, Broad Hinton, died on 2nd August at Savernake View after a long illness. This is an abridged and adapted version of the eulogy given at John’s funeral on 19th August by his son Andrew.

In preparing this eulogy I invited family and friends to share your memories and anecdotes about my father. Thank you for your contributions and kind thoughts. Many of these stories I had heard before, but many were new.

Certain phrases kept repeating : • A kind man, a gentle man, a funny/cheeky man - always interested in other peoples’ lives • A friendly man, a big hearted, loving and loyal man - a family man • He loved to party, pantomimes and fancy dress - a hat for all occasions. He loved his food • He watched his pennies, but at the same time was remarkably generous. He could be stub- born, unworldly. He was often late • He knew the secret of a happy marriage is never to disagree with your wife • Sometimes untidy, sometimes infuriating, but always polite. DIY skills - not so good. Never threw anything away

Dad had a full and happy life. He lived to the ‘ripe old age’- as we say- of 92. He was born in April 1929 in Barnet, the older of two children, with a younger sister Jean. Dad’s family came from humble roots. His father’s family from domestic service in Scotland. His mother’s family, the Kir- bys, were tenant farmers in Yorkshire.

Dad’s father, Joe, was a brilliant mathematician and a leading actuary. Joe’s pioneering work cal- culating life expectancy played a key part in the development of modern pension planning. Joe also had a lifelong passion for classical music, as one of the co-founders of the Glyndebourne Opera Festival, and the BBC Philharmonic Choir.

Dad’s childhood was overshadowed by two significant world events, the Wall Street Crash & the Great Depression of the 1930’s, and the Second World War.

In his first school report in 1932 at the colourfully named ‘Sunshine School’ in Barnet, headmis- tress Beryl Gayford declared that ‘John settled well, and made a satisfactory beginning’ . In his final school report at Sherborne School in 1947 headmaster Alexander Wallace declared ‘A very creditable finish to a very creditable school career. I believe he will go a long way in life’.

After school Dad served his National Service in Northern Ireland experiencing the highs and lows of military life : singing at the top of his voice during solo glider flights, unauthorised flights, with- out training. Overnight guard duty protecting the base from the IRA with a rifle - but no bullets. And serving ‘time’ in the glasshouse for ‘accidently’ stealing a colleague’s butter ration !

He finished his education reading mathematics at Worcester College at Oxford University

Shortly after he met my mother. My parents married on New Year’s Eve in 1955. Mum and Dad had a loving marriage for 65 years

Dad followed his own career path, joining stockbrokers Philips & Drew where his charm, persis- tence, numeracy, and flair were admirably suited to his role in equity sales, and he rose steadily to become a Senior Partner and head of the Private Clients’ Department in what was to become one of the leading broking firms in the City of London. Dad worked in the City at a time when ‘A man’s word really was his bond’. A number of Dad’s junior colleagues remember him as ‘A kind, clever man who always had time for us despite his seniority, providing us with a role model for our own careers’

11 The Broad Hinton, Uffcott and Winterbourne Bassett Local News August 2021 He became the head of a large and happy family of 5 children, and subsequently 14 grandchil- dren and 2 great grandchildren. Dad provided for his large and boisterous family with a lovely but unpretentious house in the bucolic and chalky North Down hills, in Surrey. We enjoyed a series of interesting and challenging annual holidays abroad

For many years he drove an MGB sportscar, rather too recklessly for comfort, with variable re- gard for speed limits, rights of way or junctions, and an alarming habit of drifting in neutral down steep hills - ‘to save money on petrol’. Dad had little respect for traffic wardens

He had a most successful working and professional life which enabled him to live comfortably and to retire well at the young age of 50, and to enjoy 42 years in retirement. And boy did Dad enjoy his retirement ! Mum and Dad travelled the world with good friends, visiting 15 countries in 20 years. And they threw themselves into their new life in Broad Hinton, enjoying and sup- porting village life in the church and the community, and in return this wonderful village took them to your hearts

Dad was a quiet and constant man in many ways, in his marriage, in his relationships and in his Christian faith. He was fascinated by other peoples’ lives, always open to discuss new ideas, to consider alternative view points. In this respect he is a noble example to us in an age where view points have increasingly tended to become fixed and tribal, and voices raised in anger to stifle rather than to stimulate debate

In considering big decisions in life Dad used to say ‘If it’s not obvious, stick at what you’re doing and the right path will reveal itself to you’. A sibling said of Dad ‘Never a judgment on any course of action taken. Incredibly interested and proud of his children and grandchildren. Supporting without imposing any of his own views’. He believed in community, in service, in giving back to the community. Maybe something inherited from his Scottish roots ?

A few people have shared very personal stories where Mum and Dad stepped in and quietly lifted them up at moments of crisis in their lives. One friend said ‘Your father was a wonderful man. If you want to see his legacy, just look in the mirror’. In some way I think he’s left a touch on every- one who knew him

Dementia is a cruel disease. It slowly and remorselessly robbed him of his most precious memory and his intellect. But to the end he retained his character and charm, continuing to respond to Mum, to family, to music and to kindness

Full credit must go to Mum for the loving support and care you gave him throughout your mar- ried life, and particularly in his latter years. ‘For better, for worse, in sickness and in health’ – in- deed. And also to Mark, his carer who supported them both

On behalf of my mother I’d also like to thank all of you from this church community and in this wonderful village who supported and cared for Dad and her over the years.

Please be comforted in the knowledge Dad had a very peaceful end, with Mum and children by his side, comforted by music and prayer, in a caring and supportive home

We are gathered here today to remember a much-loved man, a husband, a father, a father-in- law, grandfather, great grandfather, a friend, neighbour and colleague. And also to welcome him back as we lay him to final rest and peace in the heart of this church and this village that he loved as his home

Dad would want us to celebrate, and not to be sad. He would be embarrassed to be the centre of attention, but happy to be with us here today to celebrate : a life well lived, a life that travelled far, very creditable life indeed

Thank you and God bless

13 The Broad Hinton, Uffcott and Winterbourne Bassett Local News August 2021 View from the Rectory

It is the middle of August and parish life is in full swing albeit with cautious consideration of the current state of the pandemic. On Sunday one of my stalwart Churchwardens announced that it was my last service at that particular church for three months and in that moment the long- anticipated research leave became a reality. The needs of the parishes have largely outweighed the preparations for ‘going on the road’ and my heart did a flip at the list of meetings, paperwork and conversations that needed attention for each of these strands of my life. It felt as if I had a foot in the ‘now and the not yet’ and had to be 100% in each in this short month of transition. Then I drew breath and relaxed. The ‘now’ and the ‘not yet’ is both familiar and challenging: it is where all of us are, all the time, and all we need to do is be fully present in the moment and keep one eye on the road ahead, and do what we can as best we can with that moment.

It struck me that this perhaps is when the most learning happens, when we are fully alive to and attentive to the vagaries of life; fully present, having paused to reflect and take stock and seek God’s direction and guidance for the journey.

So what am I taking stock of right now? I found myself meditating on the story of the sending out of the 72 disciples (Luke 10:1-1.) To be a disciple simply means to be a ‘learner’.

In the time of Jesus you learnt from people rather than books and I suspect I will learn a great deal about myself, about God, and about how people feel about being connected to the Divine as I hear their stories. Starting conversations with people, being invited into groups of people you have never met before can make one feel risky and vulnerable. Being willing to share my own story and in particular the deepest belief I have - that God is Love, and that this Love, that transcends all Love, simply wants them to know they are loved and are precious and valued - is also risky. Coming back to all of you changed by these encounters with others and challenged by what I learn about myself is risky too. But when we share stories of our faith in the context of vulnerability and weakness, with a sense of dependence on others, remarkable things happen: strangers become friends, bridges are built and barriers come down.

Jesus sent his disciples to ‘all the places that he wanted to go’ and I have a feeling that not only is Jesus doing this journey alongside me but he is also sending me to where he is already ahead of me and will also be here with all of you in your journey – in the ‘now and not yet’ of absence and change. Wherever we encounter the presence of God, we enter the meeting point of heaven and earth, and my prayer for you and me and all those I may encounter on the way is that in our story connecting with their story, we learn more about HIS story and, as we journey on, together and apart, with God alongside us, we make history. The 72 returned with joy to tell the story of those they encountered. I take heart in Jesus’ promise that, whatever challenge or hardship we find in the task, we will come back together at Christmastide, to hear what happened and rejoice.

May God bless you all.

Rev’d Maria Shepherdson
