He is best known for establishing Dublin s Municipal Gallery of Modern Art (the first known public gallery of modern art in the world) and for his contribution to the visual arts in Ireland, including the Lane Bequest. Hugh Lane died on board the RMS Lusitania.Hugh Percy Lane was born in County Cork, Ireland on 9 November 1875. He was brought up in Cornwall, England, and began his career as an apprentice painting restorer and later became a successful art dealer in London. Through regular visits to Coole (near Gort), County Galway, the home of his aunt, Lady Gregory, Lane remained in contact with Ireland. He soon counted among his family, friends and social circle those who collectively formed the core of the Irish cultural renaissance in the early decades of the 20th century.Extolling the cause of Irish art abroad, Lane also became one of the foremost collectors and dealers of Impressionist paintings in Europe, and amongst those works purchased by him for the new gallery were La Musique aux Tuileries by Manet, Sur la Plage by Degas, Les Parapluies by Renoir and La Cheminee by Vuillard. Isabella Augusta, Lady Gregory ( 15 March 1852 - 22 May 1932) was an Irish dramatist, folklorist and theatre manager. With William Butler Yeats and Edward Martyn, she co-founded the Irish Literary Theatre and the Abbey Theatre, and wrote numerous short works for both companies. MISCELLANEOUS 29-30 Index 31-37 2 History and Organization of the Collection After the death of Sir Hugh (Percy) Lane on the Lusitania in 1915 his papers passed on to his sister Mrs. Ruth Shine (Later Mrs. A. R. Heaven). Material mostly relating to his death and his controversial will were added by Shine. On her death in 1959 the papers came into the custody of her executors, Mrs. G. de B. West (a cousin) and Mrs. Thistlethwaite, daughter of Harold Lane, brother of Sir Hugh Lane and Ruth Shine. The material was acquired by the National Library between 1960 and 2000 and the various accessions have been catalogued at various times: 1. Accession 2155: donated by Mrs. West in August 1960. 2. Accession 2293: purchased in July 1962. 3. Accession 2298: donated by Col. D.S.E.     Crossing the Channel: The Challenges of French Impressionism in Great Britain By Catherine Cheney Senior Honors Thesis Department of Art History University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill April 8, 2016 Approved: 1 Introduction: French Impressionism in England As Impressionism spread throughout Europe in the late nineteenth century, the movement took hold in the British art community and helped to change the fundamental ways in which people viewed and collected art. Impressionism made its debut in London in 1870 when Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, and Paul Durand-Ruel sought safe haven in London during the Franco- Prussian war. The two artists created works of London landscapes done in the new Impressionist style. Paul Durand-Ruel, a commercial dealer, marketed the Impressionist works of these two artists and of the other Impressionist artists that he brought over from Paris. The movement was officially organized for the First Impressionist Exhibition in 1874 in Paris, but the initial introduction in London laid the groundwork for promoting this new style throughout the international art world. This thesis will explore, first, the cultural transformations of London that allowed for the introduction of Impressionism as a new style in England; second, the now- famous Thames series that Monet created in the 1890s and notable exhibitions held in London during the time; and finally, the impact Impressionism had on private collectors and adding Impressionist works to the national collections. With the exception of Edouard Manet, who met with success at the Salon in Paris over the years and did not exhibit with the Impressionists, the modern artists were not received well.

The Tate Gallery of Modern British Art was founded in 1897. With funds donated by Sir Joseph Duveen a new wing was built in 1926 to include a gallery of Modern Foreign Art, with the Lane pictures being the core of the collection. The official title of that gallery is now the National Gallery, Millbank, though it is still popularly known as the Tate Gallery. I am indebted to Dr. W. J. Keith for his kind but critical supervision of this thesis. The direction he gave to my reading saved many a fruitless journey down unexplored lanes. I would also like to thank Mrs. O. W. He used the walls and door of his studio as a palette and these are covered in blobs of pink, red, orange among other colour paint. Very few people were allowed into the room especially when he was working. Following Francis Bacon’s death, his studio was donated to the gallery by his friend John Edwards. Like a large-scale jigsaw, the entire studio was then moved from London to Dublin and put back together exactly the way it was.     The Lane Legacy Hugh Lane Gallery, Dublin European collectors and champions of modern art in the late 19th and early 20th century shared a determination and passion in bringing new artistic ideas into the public domain. Their efforts were successful to varying degrees in cities across Europe as they attempted to overcome resistance from conservative official establishments and popular opinion. Some of these endeavours were temporarily successful, only to be dismissed from their official posts or have their collections dispersed after their death. Today, given the level of acclaim and value of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings, it is difficult to believe that a hundred years ago these pioneering artists and their work were viewed by many with suspicion and antagonism and relied on enlightened groups for support. Sir Hugh Lane (1875 – 1915) was one such champion who was successful in his ambitions. Inspired by the revolutionary talent of early 20th-century Irish poets and writers, including his aunt Augusta, Lady Gregory, and W.B. Yeats, who were part of Irish Literary Revival, Sir Hugh set about supporting contemporary Irish artists and establishing a gallery of modern art for Ireland. It was a time of flux, of advances in industry, technology and the arts. World Fairs showcased inventions and innovation; Gustave Eiffel’s tower was the signature work at the Universal Exposition in Paris in 1889, while at the Chicago World Fair in 1893 George Ferris Jr’s invention of the Ferris wheel was the talking point. Modernisation in industry and art was accompanied by transformation in political thinking which resulted in upheavals throughout Europe, including Ireland.
