IND ALUMNAE ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER

Summer 2020 Vol.1 No. 2

PRESIDENT’S NOTE 2020. What a challenging year for all of us, especially as an IND Community. The COVID-19 pandemic, the towering steeple of St. James Church damaged by a lightning strike and subsequent fire, and then the news that IND was closing its doors forever. It has been a perfect storm of difficult events that has taken down our school as we know it. However, as IND alumnae, we are a passionate and committed group of women who absolutely refuse to let the Spirit of IND die, so our work continues.

While our specific plans are still in development, we are actively pursuing these initiatives: Maintaining the traditional role of an alumnae association by fostering our sisterhood through • communications such as this newsletter, events (both social and service-based) and serving as a resource for reunion classes. In addition, we intend to see our youngest sisters of the Classes of ‘21, ‘22 and ‘23 through their high school years in the IND spirit. Keeping IND’s legacy alive through the establishment of a new Heritage Room to display IND memorabilia and a • new all-online Hildie’s Boutique featuring favorite IND merchandise as well as new apparel and commemorative items. We are working with the School Sisters of Notre Dame to transfer the school’s trademarks to the Alumnae Association for our continued use. Continuing the spirit of the school’s mission of education and service to the community, including • incorporating as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. At minimum, we are working with Latrobe Homes to continue Hildie’s Thanksgiving meal program, and our Mission Committee is laying plans for additional initiatives to support our East Baltimore neighborhood in various ways. By the time this newsletter reaches your mailbox, you may have already received a survey to help guide our planning.

Our new website, INDAlumnae.org, will be up and running by the end of July. Events, reunions and other information will be posted on the webpage as plans are confirmed.

To answer some common questions: Yes, there will be final tours of IND for alumnae sometime over the next few months. Yes, there will be sales of items left in the school, but only after making donations to other Catholic schools in need. Details will be published online and by email. If you received this newsletter by mail and have an email account, we ask that you please notify us at [email protected] to receive all our communications.

Finally, I want to welcome our newest alumnae, the Class of 2020. We are so very proud of your accomplishments and know that you will become an integral and active part of our association as we move forward. Congratulations on your graduation and WELCOME! …

THE ALUMNAE ASSOCIATION MOVES FORWARD The IND Alumnae Association will remain in place and active providing a variety of social activities as well as opportunities for service. The following committees seek volunteers to assist with carrying out initiatives: The Alumnae Relations Committee, chaired by Maureen Ciesielski ’72 ([email protected]), maintains contact with a leader from each class (Class Agents) and facilitates communications with alumnae in various regions of the US through Regional Representatives. This committee also assists reunion classes and conducts special outreach to

IND Alumnae Association P.O. Box 473 Riderwood, MD 21139 INDAlumnae.org [email protected] older alumnae through retirement communities. In addition, this group collects and maintains data on alumnae businesses, professions, interests, skills and talents for networking and promotional purposes.

The Mission Committee, chaired by Mary Helfrich ’80 ([email protected]), is responsible for the transition of the IND Alumnae Association from fundraising for the school to undertaking our new charitable initiatives. As we move forward, we intend to continue IND’s strong tradition of service, including the work of Hildie’s Helpers (e.g., serving the Latrobe homes at Thanksgiving) and expanding our mission to tutor/mentor young women in the Baltimore area. Another potential goal is to raise funds to offer scholarships for Catholic school education.

The Time and Talent Committee, chaired by JoAnn Stelmack ’72 ([email protected]), recruits alumnae volunteers for any and all facets of the Association and our initiatives.

The Continuing Traditions Committee chaired by Keona Bascho-George ’98 ([email protected]), is devoted to helping the Classes of 2021, 2022 and 2023 (current students), who were not able to graduate from IND. There are six subcommittees that make up the Continuing Traditions Committee: 1) Communications – sends acknowledgement letters for all donations received for the current students 2) Rings/Pins – helps current students with the IND Ring and Pin traditions 3) Graduation Support – helps current students with IND graduation traditions, e.g., red roses, teaching the Alma Mater etc. 4) Financial Support – coordinates fundraising efforts and will communicate with current students and their parents to identify needs and disburse funds 5) Tutoring – works with current students to assist in the academic transition to new schools and curricula 6) Mentoring/Adopt a Student – supports the girls in other phases of their transitions The Marketing/Communication Committee, chaired by Janet Pilarski ’81 ([email protected]), is responsible for all communication functions of the Alumnae Association: social media, newsletter, a new website, database, and all promotional communications. Going forward, this committee will manage the IND brand, trademarks, messaging and the new IND bookstore.

The Events Committee, chaired by Melanie Morris ’78 ([email protected]), is responsible for all Alumnae events -- both fundraising and social events as well as community service days. The Chair will seek leadership for each event from the Time and Talent Committee.

The Nominating Committee, chaired by Palma Wilson ’73 ([email protected]), will oversee the nomination and election process of the Alumnae Association officers each year. They also are responsible for soliciting and reviewing nominations for the Distinguished Alumna Award, for reviewing the nominations, and ultimately selecting the recipient of The Distinguished Alumna Award. NEW SCHOOLS FOR OUR YOUNGEST SISTERS With the closing of IND, students in the Classes of 2021-23 dispersed to high schools in the Baltimore Area and beyond. ALUMNAE ASSOCIATION SENIOR RECOGNITION AWARD Congratulations to the three recipients of the Alumnae Association's Senior Recognition Award for 2020: Symone Stephens, Molly Kihn and Macall Willard. Senior teachers were asked to nominate seniors based on four criteria: 1) Must be a student at IND for at least three years; 2) Must be in good academic and disciplinary standing; 3) Must exude school spirit; 4) Must demonstrate leadership and service to the school. Given the extraordinary circumstances surrounding this school year, the Alumnae Association Executive Board declined to choose a single award recipient. Instead, we were happy to present the same award to all three deserving nominees. IND Alumnae Association P.O. Box 473 Riderwood, MD 21139 INDAlumnae.org [email protected]
