LORD OUT FOR THE SPRING WACHMAN TO RETIRE Promising sprinter Lord Of The Sky (Aus) (Danerich {Aus}), FROM TRAINING once considered a contender for the GI Breeders= Cup Turf Sprint later this year, has been ruled out of the remainder of the spring by trainer Robbie Laing after suffering a tendon injury, according to Racing.com. Laing said he initially thought the injury that knocked the 6-year-old out of last Saturday=s G1 Memsie S. to be career-threatening, but said it is not as bad as he first believed. AScans have shown no tears and no holes [in the tendon], there=s a little bit of filling there and a little bit of damage to his annular ligament at the back of his fetlock joint,@ Laing told Racing.com. Wachman took out his license in 1996 at the age of 25 after spending stints with trainers , Michael Hourigan and Jim Bolger in Ireland; Bill Mitchell and Brian Mayfield Smith in ; and Jenny Pitman in England. Layton and his wife, Lyn, founded Loch Lea Farm in 1964 and the property has been managed by their son, Jim Layton, since 1980. Loch Lea raised many successful Thoroughbreds over the years, including Hall of Famer Bold n= Determined, 1983 Epsom Derby winner Teenoso and, more recently, 2008 champion juvenile filly Stardom Bound (Tapit). From a family with over 300 years of horsemanship, Layton took pride in never missing a call when he was needed. He served on the Kentucky Board of Veterinary Examiners, was awarded a Lifetime Membership of the Kentucky Veterinary Medical Association (KVMA) and received the KVMA Distinguished Service Award. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Marilyn Grant Layton, daughter Margaret Layton, sons James (Enola) Layton and Robert Layton, grandson Patrick (Aubree) Layton, granddaughters Kathleen (Edwyn) Kiely and Olivia Layton, great-grandson James Layton and great-granddaughter Avery Layton.
