The Globe Newsletter of Gleeson College Issue 10 / Friday 15 April 2016 REMEMBERING OUR COMPASSIONATE PATRON, ARCHBISHOP JAMES GLEESON In a beautiful celebration, Gleeson College was well represented by students and staff at the annual Memorial Mass for Archbishop James Gleeson, Archbishop Andrew Killian and Bishop Philip Kennedy, held in the newly renovated St Francis Xavier’s Cathedral last Wednesday 6 April. The GC Liturgy Choir, conducted by Mrs Carly Meakin, sounded wonderful and were given special mention from all those attending, including Archbishop Wilson, Vicar General Fr Philip Marshall and the Gleeson family. It was fantastic to see our Student Leaders and staff involved in readings and processions, and it was particularly lovely catching up with the Gleeson family, and in particular Ray Gleeson, Archbishop Gleeson’s brother. Thank you to all staff, students and parents for their attendance at this special celebration. STEM SOCIETY STUDENTS BECOME ELECTRICAL ENGINEERS FOR A DAY! The STEM Society consists of 15 Year 8 and 9 students, and two Year 10 mentors, who meet once a week as a curriculum extension activity with Mr Ryall and Mrs Morgante. The aim of these sessions is to challenge student abilities and extend their knowledge in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. On Wednesday 30 March we took this learning experience out of the classroom, travelling to the University of South Australia, Mawson Lakes Campus. Students worked in the field of Electrical Engineering for the day, learning how to solder and then using this new skill to create two projects. The first project was an electronic game simulator which played two games, ‘Penguin Pong’ and ‘Simon Says’. The second was a more complex electronics project which resulted in the construction of an electronic piano with volume control. To do this students were challenged with Year 9 students Katelyn Harrison & Year 8 Isaac Borg & Year 10 Tyler Dunlop high-level instructions that required them Tatenta Taivo work on their projects challenge each other at ‘Penguin Pong’ to identify components such as resistors, capacitors and LEDs, and also ensure that they were in the correct orientation with sufficient soldering to allow the circuit to be complete and therefore operational. The University Instructors were impressed by our group’s level of problem-solving abilities and the way in which they logically approached the tasks. Students were thoroughly engaged for the duration of the whole workshop, and demonstrated excellent team work assisting other students when they were finished with their own. For many, this was their first experience on a University Campus, and this enabled them an idea of the possible pathways where STEM-based subjects Gleeson College STEM Society students at University of South Australia, Mawson Lakes Campus may take them in the future. This is just the first of many excursion 2016 STEM SOCIETY: opportunities for our STEM Society students in 2016. We look forward to Isaac Borg, Charles Conroy, further activities as the year progresses Charlotte Dowling, Ryan Doyle, and thank the University of South Tyler Dunlop, Griffin Eatts, Australia, in particular Nathaniel Scherer, Anthony Faraonio, Katelyn Harrison, for their continued support of our Blake Lawrenson, Lachlan McIver, program and the assistance that they Patrick Miller, Caitlyn Monga, provide. SATURDAY MORNING SPORT WRAP UP: TERM 1 2016 With a mix of experienced players and novices, our Gleeson teams displayed great sportsmanship and persistence as they achieved some excellent results in Saturday Morning Sport in Term 1. New players were made to feel very welcome by the more seasoned members of our teams, and this continues to encourage growth and development across all our sporting sides. Six teams represented the College in Term 1 of the Summer Sport Competition - Open Boys Tennis, Open Boys Badminton, Junior Boys Tennis, Open Girls Basketball, Open Girls Softball, Open Girls Volleyball and Junior Girls Basketball. Some of our Open Girls Softball 2016 Open teams had the involvement of Year 8 and 9 students, who played above their age group to ensure that we could field a team in that chosen sport. Whilst it can be daunting for younger students to take on the challenge of playing older and often more experienced players, these teams did it with pride and determination. Last weekend saw most of the Girls Sports play off in a Finals Series with Gleeson lucky enough to have two teams play off for first place! Well done to our Open Girls Softball team who finished top of their pool, remaining undefeated in the B Competition - what an outstanding achievement! Congratulations also to our Open Girls Volleyball team who were also Open Boys Badminton 2016 undefeated but fell just short at the last hurdle, going down 0-3 to a very strong Cabra unit. The Junior Girls Basketball team coached by Mrs Josephine Williams showed their growth throughout the season as they defeated Marryatville 40-14 in their final match. Our Junior Boys and Open Boys Tennis teams had strong seasons with both sides winning most of their games throughout the season. Both the Open Boys Badminton and Open Girls Basketball teams had some strong competition in their respective pools and at times struggled to find consistent structure, however all players persevered and gave it everything they had week-in, week-out.
