After playing in various leagues as prior to World War II, the Governors were members of the Volunteer State Athletic Conference from 1947-62. Austin Peay has played two stints in the Ohio Valley Conference, the first from 1963-96 and then again from 2007 to current. From 1996-2006, Austin Peay played nonscholarship football both as an independent (1997-00, 2006) and as a member of the Pioneer Football League (2001-05). Individual game statistics and their associated records are incomplete prior to 1996 and will be added to this record book as they are digitized. 1977 OVC CHAMPIONS • 1 RETIRED JERSEYS One of the most prolific pass receivers in NCAA football history, Harold At the end of his career, John Ogles was Austin Peay’s all-time “Red” Roberts finished his career with 232 receptions for 2,999 yards leading rusher with 2,932 career yards on 636 attempts while scoring and 31 touchdowns – all marks that still stand as Austin Peay career 28 touchdowns – all marks that stood for nearly four decades. He was records. Roberts was Austin Peay’s Peay’s 8-1-1, 8-1-0 and 6-4-0 records under head coach Bill Dupes in first four-time first-team All-OVC honoree and was an Associated Press mid 1960s. He was a first team consensus All-American as 190-pound Little All-America pick in 1970. Remarkably both his single-game and senior fullback in 1966, after rushing for more than 1,054 yards and career receiving marks stood for decades. Eastern Illinois’ Erik Lora scoring 78 points (13 touchdowns). Ogles also held Austin Peay’s single broke his single-game reception mark 43 years later with a 21-catch game record of 36 rushing attempts, which resulted in 179 net yards game in 2012. Lora also eclipsed his career receptions mark during against UT Martin in 1966. Ogles was a member of APSU’s 1979 Hall the 2014 season, finishing with 332 catches. He was inducted into the of Fame Class and was inducted into OVC Hall of Fame in 1996. APSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1979. A longtime successful prep football coach, Roberts was inducted into the Franklin County High School Hall of Fame in 2014.
