Rector’s Message

As our boys go on half-term, I want to wish you all a very happy and rewarding time with them. I trust that you will be able to renew family ties and strengthen relationships and that they will be able to return to school refreshed and ready for action.

I spoke to the boys at Assembly yesterday indicating that, particularly if they are travelling on public transport, they should be reminded that they are being carefully observed by people who know that they are from Michaelhouse and will probably want to find fault with their dress and behaviour. I asked them please not to let those people do so. Our boys are very much representing Michaelhouse when they are travelling or in any similar circumstances away from school and I asked them to remember to be polite and properly dressed in all situations and also to remember to tidy up after themselves when, for example, leaving a bus. Parents can be helpful in just reminding our boys to be thoughtful in those situations and I would ask for your help in this regard. Thank you very much.

Here is a poem by the American, ee cummings, who is well-known for his idiosyncratic style and unconventional syntax. His word order, for example, highlights certain words and he runs one idea into another. I’m not going to continue the English lesson, but it is, nevertheless, clear that it is a poem in praise of God’s creation. i thank You God for most this amazing day: for the leaping greenly spirits of trees and a blue true dream of sky; and for everything which is natural which is infinite which is yes

(i who have died am alive again today, and this is the sun's birthday; this is the birth day of life and love and wings: and of the gay great happening illimitably earth) how should tasting touching hearing seeing breathing any - lifted from the no of all nothing - human merely being doubt unimaginable You?

(now the ears of my ears awake and now the eyes of my eyes are opened) e e cummings 1

Half-Term Arrangements & Bus details : 15-19 August 2019

The annual Inter-House Cross Country scheduled to take place on Wednesday 14 August has been postponed. This is due to our U15A and 1st Team soccer playing against Hilton College at Hilton. It is the opening of their new field and pavilion and we would like to send down some supporters for the opening ceremony and matches. As is the custom we will still allow boys to go home, with parents, for the half-term on Wednesday afternoon. E Block boys will be allowed to leave after their Open Day Teacher/Parent interviews, and other boys will be allowed to leave with parents from 16h00 onwards. Parents will also be able to collect their sons directly from Hilton College after the soccer if they wish. Please be sure that all arrangements are clearly communicated with your son’s Housemaster. Also note that the various bus transfers, Johannesburg, Durban and airports, will depart Michaelhouse as usual on Thursday morning, 15 August, at 08h30.

The bus list, detailing information of the staff who will accompany the various buses, is attached at the end of this newsletter.

A Block arrangements A Block pupils who choose to remain behind over half-term do so with the express goal of studying in a quiet environment. As such, should a boy opt to stay in, he will be expected to abide by normal closed weekend rules for the duration of half-term. Any deviation from this must be communicated to Mr Jonathan Smith, Housemaster on Duty, Cell: 078 320 9642.

 A Friday Night Supper leave is the only time an A Block pupil can leave the campus for dinner and he needs to return before 21h00.

 If a boy has planned to leave the school for a leave during the weekend, he will not be allowed back until the Monday of half-term. That is, should a boy wish to study until Friday afternoon, he can leave then but may not return until Monday afternoon. If boys leave without permission, it will be viewed in a very serious light.  Should parents wish to visit their sons, they can bring a picnic onto the school campus as they would during a closed weekend.  Boys cannot return a day or so early if they have gone home at the start of half-term; once they have left the campus, they need to return on Monday.

Healthy studying includes good recreation and, therefore, boys will be allowed to use the school’s facilities during the day in a respectful manner. Boys will need to be in the House at night and keep noise levels to a minimum.

McCormick & Ralfe Houses: Flag Raising Ceremony

In anticipation of the founding of McCormick and Ralfe Houses in 2020, two new flag poles have been erected in the front of the main building at Michaelhouse and there was a moment of excitement yesterday afternoon when the new flags were hoisted in the presence of the Housemasters-Elect, Ms Karin Moffat (McCormick) and Mr Mark Blew (Ralfe) as well as some of the boys who are likely to be founder members of the new Houses in 2020. The McCormick House flag’s colour is royal purple and the Ralfe House flag is clover green.

The Schlesinger Theatre presents : “Little Shop of Horrors”

A deviously delicious Broadway and Hollywood sci-fi smash musical, “Little Shop of Horrors” has devoured the hearts of theatre goers for over 30 years. Howard Ashman and Alan Menken (Disney's The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin) are the creative geniuses behind what has become one of the most popular shows in the world.

Meek floral assistant Seymour Krelborn stumbles across a new breed of plant he names "Audrey II" - after his co-worker crush. This foul-mouthed, R&B-singing carnivore promises unending fame and fortune to the down and out Krelborn as long as he keeps feeding it, BLOOD. Over time, though, Seymour discovers Audrey II's out of this world origins and intent towards global domination! One of the longest-running Off-Broadway shows, “Little Shop of Horrors”, the charmingly tongue in cheek comedy, has been produced worldwide to incredible success. Produced by Michaelhouse with St John’s D.S.G., direction by William le Cordeur, music direction by Abri Venter, puppets by KickstArt’s Greg King, a professional live orchestra, lead actors played by Drakensberg Boys’ Choir old boys and a large professional technical team, Michaelhouse hopes to bring laughter to Balgowan with a man- eating plant and a fun-loving cast. Dates: 29, 30, 31 August at 19h00 and 1 September 2019 at 14h00 Venue: Schlesinger Theatre Tickets: R120 per person / R100 scholars and pensioners Bookings: https://www.tickethut.co.za/michaelhouse 6
