    GOLDEN YEARS Liz Kotz In Jack Pierson’s first solo show, in the back room of Simon Watson’s space on Lafayette Street in 1990, he hung a bunch of color photographs all over the walls, but it wasn’t salon style: Some were high up, others in a corner. The photographs were dispersed, in an allover way, and there was a lot of white space. I remember hearing from a friend how Jack and Simon had been up late working on the installation, trying different arrangements and taking Polaroids to record them and test them out. The result may have looked casual or offhand, but it took a lot of work to get it that way (fig. 1). Many of the prints were grainy and sort of out of focus, with dust on the negative and odd glitches. The images’ amateur, snapshot feel gave the sense that they could have been made by almost anyone. Pierson describes them as shots of “the open road thru a car windshield, some fruit and a quart of milk on a kitchen table, a guy in a wheelchair watching TV in a motel room, glorious red roses crawling over a chain link fence, a view looking up at a sign against the blue sky that says Angel Youth.

    CLAMPART ! ❚ " Mark Morrisroe 1959-1989 Mark Morrisroe carried a bullet in his chest and a Polaroid camera with him at all times (the former fired from the gun of a disgruntled john, the latter a gift from the Polaroid Corporation, which included a lifetime supply of film). His life was cut short, but the photographs he took remain—lush, anguished, and comedic depictions of a life consumed by ambition and disaster. It kills me to look at my old photographs of myself and my friends. We were such beautiful, sexy kids but we always felt bad because we thought we were ugly at the time. It was because we were such outcasts in high school and so unpopular. We believed what other people said. If any one of us could have seen how attractive we really were we might have made something better of our lives. I'm the only guy that I know who wanted to runaway to be a prostitute. --Mark Morrisroe Mark was an outlaw on every front—sexually, socially, and artistically. He was marked by his dramatic and violent adolescence as a teenage prostitute with a deep distrust and a fierce sense of his uniqueness. I met him in Art School in 1977; he left shit in my mailbox as a gesture of friendship. Limping wildly down the halls in his torn t-shirts, calling himself Mark Dirt, he was Boston's first punk. He developed into a photographer with a completely distinctive artistic vision and signature. Both his pictures of his lovers, close friends, and objects of desire, and his touching still-lifes of rooms, dead flowers, and dream images stand as timeless fragments of his life, resonating with sexual longing, loneliness, and loss.

    GALERIE THADDAEUS ROPAC JACK PIERSON WALKING AROUND PARIS PANTIN 02 Apr 2017 - 13 May 2017 Opening: Sunday 2 April 2017: 1-5 pm Exceptionally open on Sunday 9 April: 12 noon - 5pm Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac is pleased to announce Walking Around, an exhibition of new photographs by American artist Jack Pierson. Jack Pierson’s photographic work has often been compared to the imagery in road movies; this particular film genre has shaped our conception of the American landscape. In his most recent body of work, created on North Captiva Island, off Florida's Gulf Coast, the artist explores the emotional undercurrents of our daily lives, from the intimacy of romantic attachment to the distant idealization of escape. As he recently stated: “Most of my work is very temporary, very provisional. You can take it with you or you can leave it. Although part of what art is supposed to do is make you immortal, either by making it or owning it.”1 The title evokes the idea of Wanderlust (the strong desire to travel), a concept strongly influenced by German Romanticism. The landscapes presented in the exhibition express the inner urge to experience nature and the world far from home. Imbued with the nostalgia of summer, the seascapes, with their atmospheric and almost abstract qualities, trigger contemplation. Yet, they are less records of a past moment than a starting point to unravel a thread of fiction. “Pierson is more intent on reflecting the fictional rather than the documentary qualities of the medium. As such, photography becomes a medium to escape from the world, a medium for stylization and for fiction and lies.

    More Life: Mark Morrisroe Opening June 24, 2021 34 East 69th Street, New York Appointment bookings available on davidzwirner.com Mark Morrisroe, Sweet Raspberry/ Spanish Madonna, 1986 © Estate of Mark Morrisroe (Ringier Collection) David Zwirner is pleased to present an exhibition of works by the photographer and filmmaker Mark Morrisroe, curated by artist Ryan McGinley, at the gallery’s East 69th Street location in New York. Known as Mark Dirt in his Boston punk days, Mark Morrisroe (1959–1989) was, in the words of his former boyfriend Jack Pierson, “magnetic and scary, … the most extreme person I had ever encountered.”1 Within his short life, Morrisroe produced a body of work that examined queer kinship, the performance of gender, and the intimacy of risk while experimenting formally with his chosen Polaroid medium. After capturing thousands of images as well as appropriating stills from his Super 8 films, Morrisroe further manipulated his photographs through a number of unconventional techniques, producing distinctive dreamlike prints. In landscapes and portraiture, he documented his circle of friends, lovers, and himself. Many of Morrisroe’s subjects, including David Armstrong, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Nan Goldin, Pat Hearn, and Pierson, attended Boston’s School of the Museum of Fine Arts or the Massachusetts College of Art; this group would become known as the Boston School. This selection of photographic work lushly re-creates the social context of a band of iconoclastic artists at the cusp of the HIV/AIDS epidemic and remembers a figure who lived and documented life at the periphery. It’s a photographer’s job to introduce work from an older generation to a newer generation of image makers.

It was upstairs at 20 East Street, and in the very early 1980s, it was home to Mike Carroll and Penelope Place. Blocks away from South Station, on the outer edges of what was the Combat Zone until the mid 1970s, the 11th Hour was situated among parking lots and big businesses. Carroll and Place had found the space when they needed somewhere to make work for the Boston Film Video Archive. They weren’t supposed to be living there as it was aive at night. It was after commercial building, and was thus heated only Monday through Friday, nine in the mornnine and before ive that the 11th Hour was very awake, as Carroll and Place put on raucous performances by The Fuckinging until Barbies, Steve Stain, Human Sexual Response and others, including the Clam Twins, the drag duo that were Taboo! (Stephen Tashjian) and Mark Morrisroe. They also put art on the walls—art that challenged the material of photography and the nature of performance, ilm and document. The material and character of photography exploded in the 1970s, in the wake of such texts as Susan Sontag’s On Photography and technological innovations such as Polaroid.

This marks the artist’s tenth solo presentation at the gallery. Over the course of more than three decades Pierson has wryly and poetically explored themes of memory, desire, longing, beauty, despair, loss, and glamour. Although Pierson emerged as the youngest member of the so-called Boston School, which included fellow photographers David Armstrong, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Nan Goldin, and Mark Morrisroe, his practice quickly expanded beyond photography into drawing, painting, collage, installation, and text-based sculpture. Pierson is known for his ability to subtly coax the poetic from the everyday—manifesting romantic affect, longing, and desire through seemingly banal objects, rough sketches, and charged turns of phrase. As New York Times art critic Roberta Smith states in a recent exhibition review, “The deep content of Jack Pierson’s art is the vulnerability of life devoured by time.” Less and more will be arranged as a poetic, achronological, and comprehensive installation that tracks Pierson’s diverse yet idiosyncratic practice, creating a sojourn through his career. Pierson has undoubtedly mined his own queerness, and specifically queer desire, through both a historical and personal lens, tying these threads together through found images plucked from the media, snapshot photography, portraits, and collage. Photo: Tony Prikryl About the artist About the exhibition Jack Pierson was born in Plymouth, For more than two decades, New York– Massachusetts, in 1960, and lives and based artist Jack Pierson has been using works in New York. In 1984, he received the visual languages of photography, his BFA from Massachusetts College of painting, sculpture, and drawing to Art, Boston. Recent group exhibitions examine intimate and emotional aspects have taken place at: the Museum of of everyday life. Just as the exhibition looks back to this moment, notice how many of the works convey a passage of time: photographs capture bygone times, text works use found letters that have been recycled into a new purpose, and abstract blue paintings have titles that suggest fleeting moments such as Every Hour or Harlem Nocturne. Pierson’s choice of words, portrait subjects, and environments are perhaps autobiographical and reveal an intimate side of the artist’s life, and also are open enough to allow us to interpret narratives and create stories of our own.
