Its population is around 180,000, and functions as the social, economic and cultural center of eastern Hokkaido. Kushiro is known for its floating green algae balls known as “marimo”, as well as red crowned cranes known as “tancho” that have been designated as a rare and protected species. The area can be called Japanʼs food production centere because of its abundant agricultural production led by dairy farming, a forestry industry that taps into rich forest resources, and a fishing industry that boasts one of the largest catches in the nation. The city works to form a safe, secure and highquality food supply system and at the same time advances efforts to conserve the natural environment and to realize an environmentally harmonious, recycling oriented society. Climate In Kushiro city, there is no rainy season throughout the year. Itʼs cool in the summer and has a high rate of sunshine and light snowfall in the fall. Therefore, Kushiro city is a great place to enjoy many outdoor activities during the different seasons. The highest monthly average temperature in Kushiro is usually 10℃ lower than the Kantō region. As such, you can enjoy the outdoors and train hard without much concern for com- plications such as heatstroke. It can hold nationwide competitions smoothly using the Main Arena and the Sub-arena. Further- more, it also contains a Multipurpose Room which you can use to practice Japanese martial arts and other sports. A 240 meter Running Course, Training Room, and Health & Fitness rooms are also available for use.
