Harvest Toilet Twinning Over the coming weeks you will see from the service list that we shall be holding our annual Harvest Thanksgiving services in the three churches of our benefice. We are constantly hearing about our nation’s debt crisis and the problems facing many countries throughout the world. Yet, somehow, we Revd. Bob Politt continue to enjoy so much in spite of being told that our quality of life is under threat. Our harvest celebrations are an opportunity to be reminded of just how much we are blessed and to say ‘thank you’ to God for all that He provides for us, which includes the gift of life itself and our natural skills and abilities. Christianity is a way of life built upon a relationship with our Creator, belonging to God’s family and learning to be his children. Harvest is an opportunity to thank Him for all He gives us and to share what we have with others. Each year the gifts of food brought to our services are taken to the Loddon School and this year St Leonard’s will be donating its Harvest collection to a Toilet Twinning scheme. As they seek to raise money to build their own toilet facilities they have decided to provide for others what they are seeking for themselves. If you would like to twin your toilet see the article on page 15 for details. Sharing food at Harvest and helping to build clean sanitation for those who can’t afford it may seem a small thing to do but it’s expressing a willingness to recognise the needs of those around us and to get involved. It’s also a recognition of our need for each other and our need to be valued as a part of the community. ‘Messy Church’ at Sherfield Park Families and residents of Sherfield Park who worship at St Leonard’s are exploring ways in which they can extend support to the whole village by using their new Community Centre for worship and social activities. ‘Messy Church’ is the first of a number of events and will be held monthly at Sherfield Park Community Centre starting on Friday 16th September, 4.15-6.00p.m. This is open to anyone of any age. For more information see page 23 for details. Christian greetings,

CHRISTIANITY EXPLORED in BRAMLEY As there is no Alpha Course happening in Sherfield this autumn all will be welcomed to join this similar course at Bramley Is there life after death? Why does God allow suffering and war? What’s it all about? Isn’t Christianity simply irrelevant to my life? Starting on Monday evening, 12 September, we shall be running a weekly course of Christianity Explored at Cross House, next to the church in Bramley. The course will run for seven weeks. Christianity Explored gives you time and space to consider the big questions of life and to explore the life of the person at the heart of the Christian faith - Jesus Christ. - you don't need to know anything about the Bible. - you won't be asked to read aloud, pray or sing. - you can ask any question you want. A meal will be served at 7pm to all who book and we will finish everything by 9pm on the dot. If you’re interested, please contact John or Ann Lenton on 880570 for more information and/or to book a place.

Evergreens Our July meeting was a very interesting talk by Tracy Peacock from Age Concern. Tracy talked about the role they play throughout the area and the extent of the services they offer. She also handed out leaflets advertising the services and the social activities which they help organise. Tracy also answered any questions raised by the members. We also had a very enjoyable outing in July to the Avenue Nurseries Lasham for afternoon tea. Before we sat down to tea there was time to browse around the shop and the garden centre to make any purchases. The August meeting was opened by the chairperson who introduced Jenny Edwards. Jenny came along to give us armchair exercises and meditation. After we had practised the exercises then we listened to soothing music while Jenny took us on a journey to the beach for the meditation. The idea of meditation is to help you chill out and relax. The next meeting is a talk by the gardener from Whitewater Nurseries on Sept 5th.

TEXT FOR THE MONTH… … Galatians 6: 7 - 9 God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows, the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people. The NIV Bible

Prayer for the Month. Lord of all, as we thank you for our harvest, we remember those who do not celebrate because the harvest is poor or even non existent, those living in areas of famine and drought. Help us to provide from our plenty the needs they have of food and water. Help us to respond with love and concern, offering whatever we can from the riches you have given to us. Speak to us at this time of harvest so that our hearts may be stirred and our con- sciences quickened. Save us from selfish indulgence thinking only of our own comforts and ignoring their needs. You have blessed us so much, help us to respond. In the name of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.

Prayer Points for September… Pray for ….  Continued peace in our towns that our communities may be able to live together in unity.  All unsure of their future, worried by the problems facing our country, fearful for the future and for their jobs and their families  world leaders at this time of anxieties, worries and uncer- tainty about the future. Give them a vision to see a clear way forward.  The children of our villages as they return to school in Sep- tember, for those who are changing schools and for those who are moving to higher education, calm their fears and help them to trust in you.

International charities Cord and Tearfund have joined forces to set up Toilet Twinning: a different way to help improve lives in poor communities around the world. 2.6 billion people (40% of the world's population) don’t have somewhere safe, clean and hygienic to go to the loo. You can help change that by twinning your toilet! By twinning a toilet you'll be helping those who need it most to access safe sanitation, clean water and hygiene education. If you twin your own toilet with a toilet in Africa, you will receive a certificate and pho- to including the GPS co-ordinates of your twinned toilet! At St Leonard’s we are running an Extension Project which includes providing toilets for the first time in our Church. So at Harvest it seemed like a good opportunity to donate the collection to Toilet Twinning to help provide for those without basic toilet facilities in their daily lives. For more information go to toilettwinning.org.uk

Back to Church Sunday is a national initiative encouraging people to come along to a service at your local church. This year it is being held on Sunday 25th September. Those who attend the local churches are encouraged to invite a friend along on that day. At St Leonard’s church in Sherfield it is the Harvest Family Service on that Sunday, which is always a popular service. We aim to ensure that anyone who doesn’t currently attend can be guaranteed a specially warm welcome on that day. Hope to see you then! For more infor- mation contact Bob Politt on 01256 882209.

Grand Opening of the Sherfield Park Community Centre th Saturday 18 June 2011 It was a day that many residents felt would never come. For over 5 years the Community Association has worked to secure a Community Centre on Sherfield Park. The £2million building completed by Croudace homes Ltd and presented to the Community Association by BDBC is over 900 square metres in size and comprises a main hall, 3 multifunction meeting rooms, café , kitchen, consulting room, purpose designed nursery and large change room facilities together with two FA standard football pitches . With more than 300 visitors attending the grand opening, the celebration began with the tape cutting ceremony performed by his worship the mayor Councillor David Leek together with Andy Yallop chairman of Croudace Homes Ltd and David Leivesley, chairman of the Sherfield Park Community Association. Honoured guests included MP Maria Miller and Councillor Elaine Still. Following the opening ceremony everyone was invited into the centre to enjoy a whole host of activities and demonstrations which had been provided including a steel band in the reception area to greet visitors with stalls and demonstrations in the main hall, face

painting and a clown for children in the nursery, reflexology demonstration in the consulting room and a bar located in the large meeting room. A free barbeque was set up on the football fields where football demonstrations and activities for the children had been organised. The reception desk was kept busy throughout the afternoon with residents completing membership forms and prospective hirers signing up for room hire.

Following the opening event our Centre manager, Candice Wright, has continued the task of increasing the number and range of activities in the centre, and recently organised our first event, a curry and Quiz night which proved a great success. We are continuing to add new activities and events and have a wide range of rooms available for all manner of meetings, parties and celebrations. Bramley’s Clift Surgery welcomes 2 new initiatives Hampshire Health Record (HHR) The Clift surgery supported by the Clift Patients Participation Group is joining the Hampshire Health Record. This is a central store of patient medical and social care information for people living in Hampshire held on a secure computer managed by the NHS in Southampton. It will enable healthcare professionals to access up-to- date patient records from any access point in hospitals and clinics in Hampshire. The information held for each person could vary, but may include details provided by their GP, information from hospitals such as laboratory results and patient notes, and details from health and social care teams. Authorised medical staff will be able to access a patient’s medical records at any time, giving them immediate access to the patient’s medical history including their current drugs regime, results of recent tests and allergies. Thus if you call the out- of hours Hants Doc service in the middle of the night, or attend A&E in an emergency, the doctor will be able to access your medical information immediately and recommend a course of action based on the best information available.Your medical records can only be accessed with your approval (if your condition prevents you from giving approval, doctors may access your records on an emergency basis). Each time your record is accessed, the name and details of the person accessing are recorded automatically in a log attached to your record. Patients will be able to obtain copies of their records and a copy of the log of accesses to their records so that they can know what information is being held about them and confirm that only authorised access has taken place. The Clift Surgery has initiated the process of joining the HHR, but wishes to inform all patients that they have a right to object to their records being included. If you do not wish your medical records to be included on the HHR, please contact Clift Surgery reception 01256 881228. To find out more about the HHR, visit www.hantshealthrecord.nhs.uk. Patients Consultative Group The NHS is changing and GPs will soon have greater responsibility to control the treatment of their patients. At the same time the NHS is looking for ways to reduce costs and save money. It would be helpful to have a way of obtaining the views of patients to proposed changes or to seek their preferences when there are options. As one way of helping to achieve this, The Patient Participation Group propose to create an online Patient Consultative Group (PCG). Patients who are willing to join this group would simply have their email address added to a PCG distribution list. When issues for consultation arise, a description of the issues and the required response will be emailed to everyone on the list. The replies will then allow the Practice to better understand the views of the patient community. If you would like to join this initiative, please email Clift Surgery at [email protected] giving your name, your house number/name and postcode and put “Wish to Join PCG” in the subject line. The surgery will acknowledge your request, but then you will not hear anything until the first topic for consultation is distributed. Your email address will be secure and will not be passed to any other party nor appear in the distribution of the consultation request emails.

This will ensure the building can stay open and safely continue to provide facilities for all the groups and activities, and remain at the heart of the village. The Village Hall Management Committee is extremely grateful to the Four Lanes Trust, Hampshire County Council (Community Partnership Funding) and to the Village Fete Committee for providing grant funding towards this project. We hope to start the work shortly.

THE WOMEN’S INSTITUTE Reported by Ilene Iles

In July Dee Bulpitt, our President, welcomed everyone to our Garden Party Meeting. Jerusalem was sung and the Minutes of the last Meeting were read and signed and other business matters dealt with – correspondence, Treasurer’s Report and forthcoming events. Val Denny voiced concern that there were not too many people interested in the trip to Bletchley Park in October and a decision would have to be made at a later date whether to go ahead. Dee mentioned that there would not be a walk in July as she is not available. She also thanked all those who had helped and provided cakes and produce for our table at the Sherfield Fete. It had been a successful day. A letter of thanks from the Fete Committee had been received. Several other matters were discussed and the Business Meeting closed at 2.55 p.m. There were two competitions – Single Bloom (won by Helen Rolton) and A Flower Arrangement in a Medium Wine Glass (won by Eileen Gulston). Dee had also prepared two quizzes for us – “Picture of Herbs” (won by Eileen Gulston’s table) and “Trees and Shrubs” (won by Tess Morris’ table). A delicious tea and strawberries and cream were served while, and during, Members completing the quizzes. Dee then read us a poem entitled “Teapot”. A most enjoyable afternoon. Our August Meeting was opened by Dee Bulpitt, our President. On behalf of Lois Batting, who is in hospital, she thanked all those who had sent cards to her and reported that she is progressing slowly. Jerusalem was sung and the Minutes read and signed. As Val Denny was on holiday, Dee covered the correspondence, Evelyn Holdaway gave the Treasurer’s report and other internal matters were covered. Dee gave a report on the Sherfield Village Hall Committee Meeting which she and Tess had attended on behalf of the WI and the Business Meeting closed at 2.55 p.m. Dee then introduced our Speaker – Mr Reg Fletcher whose subject was “Personal Perspectives of Winchester Cathedral” which he illustrated with many slides. A very enthusiastic and knowledgeable person with a great fondness for his subject. He is a Voluntary Guide and Sidesman in the Cathedral and began with a slide of an aerial view showing quite clearly the site of the original Cathedral built in 648, on the order of William the Conqueror, and the grave of St Swithin. Mr Fletcher entertained us with many anecdotes and facts and slides of carvings and sculptures and invited us to sing part of a Gregorian Chant, under his tuition! Ilene Iles gave the Vote of Thanks. A delicious tea followed and the raffle was drawn. NEXT MEETING: WEDNESDAY, 7th SEPTEMBER 2011 AT 2 P.M. SPEAKER: ANNE BRUMMER - SUBJECT: “SHARING OUR WILDLIFE AND EXPERIENCES”

Report by Gill Fearon

NWR have continued to meet over the summer and the July meeting was a discussion evening. Items for discussion are put into a hat and drawn at random. Three topics discussed included the Middle East, the state of the British press in relation to the recent Murdoch scandal and the Christian couple who were confronted with gay visitors at their bed and breakfast accommodation.

More recently at our August meeting, we welcomed Carol and Sammie Armstrong from St Leonard’s Church to talk about Fairtrade. We were divided into groups of supermarket, importers, transporters, plantation owners and workers and each took our percentage of the money for one banana until the worker at the bottom of the chain received a penny. Fairtrade is about making the percentages fairer so that the workers receive a reasonable sum for their labours. It is also about improving working conditions, giving workers more rights and providing the money for investment in the communities of the developing countries. Fairtrade has been around as a concept for over 40 years, but it was not until the late 1980s that the formal labelling was started. It expanded in the 1990s and in 2000 Garstang in Lancashire became the first Fairtrade town. Basingstoke gained this status earlier this year. Towns have to demonstrate that many shops, businesses and schools support it and the Co-op is the main supporter both in Basingstoke and nationally. However other supermarkets and shops make an effort and our own ‘The Shop’ in Sherfield has Fairtrade products. Fairtrade was greatly helped by Tate and Lyle in 2007 and then Cadburys in 2009. The products most commonly associated with Fairtrade are bananas, coffee, chocolate and tea, but there are many more, for example, other fruits, spices and even clothes made from cotton. Fairtrade items were generally more expensive in the early days, but now with more and more products available, the cost has reduced and sometimes is even cheaper than the non-Fairtrade. This was a most interesting talk and certainly made us more aware of what Fairtrade means and encouraged us to look out for the label!

Our next meeting will be a play reading.

Rooms and role models required! Do YOU have a spare room? Could YOU do with some extra income? Would YOU be up for supporting a local teenager?

If so Stonham Supported Lodgings would love to hear from you! Stonham support ‘Hosts’ who can help young adults/teenagers gain the skills and confidence to live independently. Many of the young people they place have had tough times in their own families or been brought up in the Care System. They need some stability and support to move forward in their lives and a positive role model. One recently wrote to her host ‘Thank you for everything….for all the cups of tea, for Christmas day, for letting me win at scrabble, for showing me a way to live a better life…..’ Being a Host can be challenging at times but is a fantastically worthwhile thing to do as you get to really play a part in a young person turning their lives around. It is quite possible to combine being a supported lodgings host with working full time. Stonham work at times, in the week to suit you and the young person, will give you flexibly delivered training and you would earn around £165 per week.

For more information on this invaluable role contact Penny Diver on 077259 58288 or email [email protected]

New Year About to Start at Linguatastic It’s the end of another academic year and several of the children who attend our pre-school groups are about to start big school. Although we shall miss them at these morning sessions, we are delighted that most of them will be keeping up with the second (or third) languages they have become so familiar with and join us at our after-school lan- guage clubs. Pre-schoolers and older children have had a busy term at Linguatastic, participating in the Old Basing Carnival, picnicking in Great Binfields Primary School’s woodland and enjoying sports activi- ties together and teaching other children and adults new words in oth- er languages at the Olympics Day at Queen Mary’s College. We have all had a lot of fun whilst learning and look forward to meeting again after the long summer break. We’d like to wish our friends who are starting school or moving away, all the very best and hope that all pupils have a lovely holiday. If you would like to find out more about the French, Spanish, German, Man- darin or Italian sessions we run, please visit: www.linguatastic.com or telephone 811100.
