DOHA: Doha Centre for Media Freedom (DCMF) is organizing six train- ing workshops for Syrian journalists, which will be held in Turkey and Jordan over the coming two months. Between November 17 and 23, the centre is hosting two workshops in Istanbul; the first on international standards of quality and the second on online journalism. A third workshop to be held in Gaziantep will focus on safety, as part of DCMF’s Ali Hassan Al Jaber programme for the safety of journalists launched earlier this year. The project is the culmi- nation of the Doha Centre’s efforts to engage the emerg- ing Syrian media landscape. A delegation led by the cen- tre’s Director General Jan Keulen visited Turkey last May to explore the conditions of Syrian journalists there. Keulen emphasised the project’s strategic impor- tance, highlighting “the pivotal role Syria journal- ists and media activists play in providing reli- able news and information about the unfolding events in their country. TAQA in $240m deal to sell Dutch pipeline stake

DUBAI: Abu Dhabi National Energy Co (TAQA) is selling its 40 percent stake in a Dutch natural gas pipeline to a Danish pension fund for $240m as the invest- ment no longer meets its growth strategy in the country, it said yesterday. The sale of the stake in Noordgastransport BV (NGT) to pension fund PensionDanmark A/S is expected to close in 2013, TAQA, which is 75-per- cent owned by the Abu Dhabi government, said in a statement to the stock exchange. It declined to say how much it paid for the stake, bought from Royal DSM in 2009. David Cook, head of oil & gas operations said TAQA’s strategy was to maximise its portfolio’s value and it would focus on a $1bn stor- age project, Bergermeer, in which it has a 60-per- cent stake. It also owns and operates a gas storage facility in Alkmaar in the Netherlands. NGT, operated by GDF Suez, consists of about 470km of offshore pipeline with daily gas capacity of about 42m cubic metres, TAQA said. In 2012, TAQA bought a number of BP’s North Sea assets for more than $1.3bn. It got clearance from the Kurdistan Regional Government to develop the Atrush Block in the autonomous region of Iraq last month. REUTERS MONDAY 11 NOVEMBER 2013 20 www.thepeninsulaqatar.com BUSINESS

What happens in Egypt could have a ripple effect on the rest of the region, which has also suffered from political and economic turmoil since the Arab Spring uprisings. The government says it is still on track to rewrite the constitu- tion and hold parliamentary and presidential elections in early 2014, part of a political roadmap the army announced after it removed Mursi. Supported by the Gulf aid pledges, the government announced a EP22.3bn ($3.2bn) stimulus package in August. It later increased it by a third to EP29.6bn and plans yet another EP24bn package early next year. But the government has not spelled out details of any other long-term plans to strengthen the economy. The interim government has raised the public sector minimum wage and pensions, and the central bank has lowered its key interest rates by a full percentage point since August to encour- age growth. In addition, the government has said it would focus on a series of labour-intensive infrastructure projects and unfinished public projects designed to quickly improve living standards of Egypt’s 85 million citizens. Some businessmen say there are indications that investors and tourists, once its main source of foreign exchange, will return once the political turmoil subsides. “Foreign investors are primarily concerned about stability, no violence, where they feel their investments are safe, where there is an ease of going in and out,” said Hussein Choucri, head of Cairo- based HC Securities, a mid-sized investment bank. “You have some big companies in the Gulf that have discounted the economic and political risk already.” However, many investors are not only worried about security but recoil from the way Egypt has treated businessmen since the uprising.
