Hawthorne’s Gifts: Re-reading “Alice Doane’s Appeal” and “The Great Carbuncle” in The Token alexandra urakova AMUEL Griswold Goodrich’s The Token, an annual gift S book in which Nathaniel Hawthorne anonymously pub- lished many of his early tales, has long become the emblem of his “years of obscurity.” Later in his lifetime, Hawthorne would speak about his tales as “rummaged out” “within the shabby morocco-covers of faded Souvenirs.”1 He would de- scribe “musty and mouse-nibbled leaves of old periodicals, transformed, by the magic arts of [his] friendly publishers, into a new book.”2 If the course of Hawthorne’s publication his- tory was culling his fugitive stories from old annuals for the purposes of bringing them together under his own name, I propose to recast these stories back from the “morocco-covers” of The Token and put them alongside neighboring entries to connect them to the broader generic and ideological framework of the volumes and the format of the gift book in general. ABSTRACT The figure of woman is of central importance to the whole pre- sentation of meaning in Nathaniel Hawthorne's fiction. In comparison to other writers of the nineteenth century, and especially his male compatriots, Hawthorne grants the female figure a remarkable degree of prominence and significance in his works. His presentation of woman is noteworthy not only for the depth and subtlety with which his female characters are portrayed but also for the unique way in which he mani- pulates the standard female stereotypes to explore through symbolic suggestion the whole purpose of woman's existence and the foundations of her relations with man. -

Nathaniel Hawthorne writes that a romance differs from a novel In "both i Its fashion and Its material." Critics have long devoted themselves to the material of Hawthornlan romance, but few have given more than perfunctory attention to the way in which that material is fashioned. In the preface, Hawthorne alludes to certain techniques in the creation of romances The point of view in which this tal© comes under the Romantic definition lies in the attempt to connect a by-gone tlae with the very present that is flitting" away from us.' He worked at the custom-house in his native town Salem for a living without writing his works, where he seemed to be an efficient surveyor. Although he was dismissed unexpectedly for the vicissitude of the political situation, he began to write the work, as there is no time like the present. His wife Sophia, on the other hand, gave generous support to him by her side job to make lump shades. In this period, his mother was dead of sick, who brought up her children by herself. Around him there were some women including his brilliant sisters who gave inspiration to him - 69 - and attracted him to their individualities, with the result that he found out the human heart as the first author writing women who have personalities in the history of American literature. In the opening chapter of The Scarlet Letter, “a wild rose-bush,” of which the air would be saturated with the perfume, takes root in front of the prison-door. -

Re ference has been made also, to the apparently essential element of its constitution proven by the fact of its being discarded in one epoch and its being adopted in another. The term symbolism at the present day has a wide and varied connotation. To the mathematician it has one meaning, to the psychologist another, to the artist still another. Before attesting to communicate ideas in the phases of this subject, then, it is necessary that the term be restricted and defined. Symbolism is as old as creation and began when God made the world and its created things. <d Without it there can be no language, no literature: E for words and letters are symbols; mere sounds of the voice are symbols which have been agreed upon to give certain signification. -

ANALYSIS “The Gentle Boy” (1832) Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864) “The Gentle Boy” dramatizes the historical persecution of the early Quakers, who began to appear in New England in 1656. It displays most clearly two of Hawthorne’s main themes: (1) the need to balance the head and the heart; and (2) the evil of “pernicious principles” in ideologies such as Calvinism and early Quakerism that imbalance and divide the soul, leading to inhumanity and perhaps to damnation, which is “eternal alienation from the good and the true,” as exemplified by the Calvinists Young Goodman Brown, Parson Hooper and “The Man of Adamant.” The fanatical Quaker mother, Catherine, is comparable to Anne Hutchinson, who was exiled for heresy in 1637, and to Hester Prynne in The Scarlet Letter. Illustrated with drawings by Sophia Hawthorne, “The Gentle Boy” is the sentimental and ironic story of Ilbrahim, Quaker child of a martyred father and a banished mother. He is not more than six years old, the innocent victim of Quaker fanaticism on the one hand and of Puritan brutality on the other. He is found weeping on his father’s fresh grave by Tobias Pearson, an exceptional Puritan who “possessed a comprehensive heart, which not even religious prejudice could harden into stone.” The heart of Tobias “prompted him, like the speaking of an inward voice, to take the little outcast home, and be kind unto him.” Tobias and Dorothy take in the boy, a “sweet infant of the skies,” “a domesticated sunbeam” and a “victim of his own heavenly nature,” who tells tales--romances in fact. -

Since Poe's and Melville's early re• marks on Hawthorne's love of allegory and his power of blackness, many critics have studied the extensive use of symbolism and the detailed anal• ysis of human nature in his works. While critics have not ignored the numerous examples of nature symbolism contained in the works, none has made a comprehensive analysis of Hawthorne's systematic patterns. Such an analysis reveals a significant aspect of the already acknowledged depth and genius of his symbolic method and shows that his use of nature sym• bolism, differing from that of both his puritan ancestors and transcenden- talist contemporaries, serves as further evidence of his great artistic originality. -

Journal of Ecocriticism 3(2) July 2011 Reading the Willey Disaster: An Evolutionary Approach to Environmental Aesthetics in Cole’s Notch of the White Mountains and Hawthorne’s “The Ambitious Guest” Ian Marshall , (Penn State Altoona)1 Abstract Inspired by the Willey Disaster of 1826, a landslide in the White Mountains that killed an entire family living in Crawford Notch, both Nathaniel Hawthorne and Thomas Cole produced works of art commemorating the event. Hawthorne’s story “The Ambitious Guest” and Cole’s painting The Notch of the White Mountains are usually read in light of their cultural significance, most often as contributions to a nationalist aesthetic that sought to celebrate American landscapes—and the history and legends associated with them—as the basis for distinctly American art forms. But applying ideas about the evolutionary basis for environmental preferences, as described in articles by Gordon Orians and Judith Heerwagen and Stephen Kaplan, gives us a different way to account for the lasting appeal of these classic works of landscape art and environmental literature. RecogniZing the importance of habitat selection to any species, Orians and Heerwagen outline the “savanna hypothesis,” “prospect-refuge theory,” and the temporal and spatial frames of reference as they account for our intuitive and subconscious preference for certain landscapes. Kaplan describes a four-part “preference model,” discussing the appeals of coherence, complexity, legibility, and mystery in determining our landscape preferences. Together, their analyses demonstrate why we are drawn to landscapes which offer both access to resources and protection from predators, which allow us to see without being seen, and which offer the promise of successful inhabitation. -

American culture is no exception, but the movement towards monstrosity in literature is nothing new in American culture. This project examines the monstrous traits exhibited by the characters in various short stories by 19th Century American authors Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edgar Allan Poe. Through the lens of David Gilmore’s Monster Theory, presented in Monsters: Evil Beings, Mythical Beasts, and All Manner of Imaginary Terrors, this project shows how Hawthorne and Poe’s monomaniacal characters fit into academic theories of monstrosity as well as the cultural implications of monsters in early American Literature.
