Richard Kaufman conductor These performances mark Richard Kaufman’s TSO début.

Richard Kaufman has devoted much of his musical life to conducting and supervising music for and television productions, as well as performing film and in concert halls and on recordings. The 2018/19 season marks his 14th season with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra concert series “CSO at the Movies”, and his 28th season as Principal Pops Conductor of Pacific Symphony. He holds the permanent title of Pops Conductor Laureate with the Dallas Symphony. Engagements this season include Kaufman’s débuts with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and return engagements with the Detroit and Hawaii Symphonies, the Cleveland Orchestra conducting its annual Christmas Concerts, and Royal Scottish National Orchestra. Recent highlights include debuts with the New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, Iceland Symphony Orchestra, and the Handel and Haydn Society. In 2015, Kaufman made his conducting début with the Boston Pops Orchestra, substituting for John Williams at the Annual Pops Film Night, and Mr. Williams invited Kaufman to share the podium at the annual Tanglewood Film Night in August 2016. In July 2016, two days before its official theatrical release, Richard conducted the San Diego Symphony in a live performance of ’s score for Star Trek Beyond, accompanying the film in its gala world première in IMAX.

One of the world’s leading conductors of film music, Kaufman regularly appears with the symphony orchestras of Cleveland, San Francisco, Atlanta, St. Louis, , Liverpool, Dublin, Indianapolis, San Diego, and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. He is often asked to conduct such legendary film titles as Singin’ in the Rain, The Wizard of Oz, Psycho, Vertigo, North by Northwest, Casablanca, The Bride of Frankenstein, , Pirates of the Caribbean, Silverado, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Amadeus, and Star Trek. Kaufman received the 1993 GRAMMY® Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. He supervised music for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios for eighteen years, receiving two Emmy nominations.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, , Whitney made her symphony début at age seven, singing in the children’s chorus in the West Coast première of music from John Williams’s with Orange County’s Pacific Symphony. After receiving a BFA in theatre performance from Chapman University, she spent two years with the North American tour of the Broadway hit Mamma Mia!. Her performance as Sophie garnered this review from the Boston Globe: “With her pure, clear voice, gentle or forceful as called for, but always beautifully placed— she really deserves to vault straight to Broadway. Plus, her acting is as compelling as her singing.” Whitney has performed as principal guest soloist with more than 30 symphony orchestras spanning the globe, including the Malaysian Philharmonic in Kuala Lumpur, the Calgary Philharmonic, the Atlanta Symphony, the Blossom Festival Orchestra, the Florida Orchestra, the Dallas Symphony, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in , the National Symphony at the Kennedy Center, and is thrilled to make her Toronto Symphony Orchestra début. She has spent several seasons touring with “Disney in Concert”, bringing the magical music of the of to audiences all over the world. She was also chosen to sing the world concert première of a deleted song from Mary Poppins in the Sherman Brothers tribute concert “”, staged by the Golden State Pops Orchestra. Her favourite theatrical appearances include Cabaret, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Marisol, The Robber Bridegroom, and the Los Angeles Theatre Ensemble’s original production of Wounded at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. TV credits include General Hospital and the ABC series Modern Family. As both a singer and voice-over performer in film and television, she has been heard on productions including That Championship Season, The Secret of NiMH 2, and two MGM animated series: All Dogs Go to Heaven and Noddy. She can be heard on the GRAMMY®-nominated recordings of songs written by Oscar-winning Dimitri Tiomkin.
