    Ethics in Crimes and Misdemeanors

    Ethics in Crimes and Misdemeanors How do we get at the ethical content of a movie? Let’s begin with a slightly easier question: Why should ethicists go to the movies? What can they expect to learn? One obvious reason is that ethicists like most people might simply enjoy watching movies. What I have in mind, however, is why ethicists qua ethicists should go to the movies. What can they learn as ethicists by watching films? The answer to this question will give us some ideas about how to get at the ethical content of movies. Jerry Goodenough has identified four reasons a philosopher as a philosopher might want to go to the movies.[1] Adapting his classification scheme to ethics in particular, we could say first of all that an ethicist might go to the movies because he was interested in ethical questions about the film medium itself and the nature of the film experience. Is, for example, going to the movie like going into Plato‘s gave? Secondly, an ethicist might want to go to the movies because films often illustrate moral theses or problems. Sophie’s Choice (Alan J. Pakula, 1982) clearly illustrates an ethical dilemma few parents would ever want to face in real life. Countless movies and TV shows illustrate ethical problems doctors face when called upon to save murderers, especially when not saving them would benefit a large number of people. Those who teach ethics, or philosophy, through films, usually concentrate on movies that illustrate ethics. Note that a film can illustrate ethical problems without being explicitly about ethics and without dealing with these problems systematically, not to say argumentatively.

ABSTRACT The thesis explores the reception of classical mythology in three dramas by Woody Allen: Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989), Match Point (2005), and Cassandra’s Dream (2007). These films are studied as contemporary interpretations of the ancient stories of Oedipus, Narcissus, and Orestes. Allen’s films use mythic patterns to meditate on such ancient themes as illusion versus reality, status, alienation and self-identity, the tragedy of love, human conscience, moral choice and responsibility, fate and revenge, crime and punishment. The purpose of this study is to show how Woody Allen’s dramas originate from ancient mythology and how the study of Greek tragedy and Roman poetry sheds light on the problems centered in his movies, which are neglected by most critics.

    THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 5, No. 3 (1983) THE ROCK ISLAND INDEPENDENTS By Bob Braunwart & Bob Carroll On an October Sunday afternoon in 1921, the Chicago Cardinals held a 7-0 lead after the first quarter at Normal Park on the strength of Paddy Driscoll's 75-year punt return for a touchdown and his subsequent extra point. If there was a downside for the 4,000 assembled Cardinal fans, it was the lackluster performance of the visitors from across state--The Rock Island Independents. But the Independents were not dead. As a matter of fact, their second quarter was to be quite exciting--and certainly one of the most important sessions in the life of their young halfback, Jim Conzelman. It would be nice if we only knew in what order the three crucial events of that second quarter occurred, but newspaper accounts are unclear and personal recollections are vague. Certain it is that the Islanders ruched the ball down the field to the Chicago five. At that point, Quarterback Sid Nichols lofted a short pass to Conzelman in the end zone. After Jim tied the score with a nice kick, the teams lined up to start all over. At the kickoff, Conzelman was down the field like a shot--the Cardinals were to insist he was offsides. Before any Chicagoan could lay hand on the ball, Jim grasped it and zipped unmolested across the goal line. Another kick brought the score to 14-7, as it was to remain through the second half. The third event of that fateful second quarter was the most unusual, but whether it happened before Conzelman's heroics to inspire him or after them to reward him is something we'll probably never know.

Both films differ from classical film noir, however, in the protagonist’s ability to enter into the criminal underworld and return unscathed by the experience. Whereas classical noir protagonists are isolated and unable to enter (or re-enter) everyday society, the protagonists in Allen’s films are able to do so, moving the focus of these films from an existentialist “fate” of the classical noir to an individualized morality based on choice and reason. This essay examines the noir elements of both Crimes and Misdemeanors and Match Point in an effort to expand current academic understanding of Woody Allen’s film oeuvre.
