The mission of the Youth Science Center is to inform, instruct, and inspire people of all ages and backgrounds to discover the excitement of science and technology through exhibits and Officers & Board Members programs that promote learning 2014-2015 through interaction.

3D Printing and Modeling: Dream it, Design it, Print it #11, 40, 64, 85, 103 – Instr. Kim Bach and Steven Bach. Grades 5-8. Learn the basics of additive manufacturing (3D printing) using cutting edge tools and computer aided design software. Create several digital models using a 3D printer. You might make a key chain, a small box with a lid, and create your own models. This is a double length class ending at 11:45. Art + Science = Life #102 – Instr. Paul Burns. Grades 4-5. Design and build an exhibit of the sciences as seen through your artistic genius. Art turns S.T.E.M. into S.T.E.A.M. We will create sculptures, paintings, and rubbings that emulate the masters of science and art. Chagall, Seurat, Da Vinci, Hokusai, Khalo, Rivera, O’Keefe and more. We explore the artistic styles using science as our inspiration. This is a double length class ending at 11:45. Art Smart II #47 – Instr. Leann Legind. Grades K-2. If you loved Art Smart I, then get ready for more incredible art projects! Continue to explore the artistic forms and mediums of the visual arts such as clay, watercolor, pastels, chalk, pencil, and torn paper while creating like the great masters – Klee, Renoir, Cezanne, Gauguin, and more. New students are also welcome. Beautiful Botany #15 – Instr. Loni Cuatt. Grades K-1. Learn about the green part of our world. We will look at plants up close and personal and even under a microscope. We will also plant our own seeds and study them as they sprout. Beginning Magic #78, 94 – Instr. George Lightholder. Grades 1-2 and 7-8. Become a magician! Learn simple slight of hand, disappearing coins, rope and card tricks. Most props are provided. This is a double length class ending at 11:45. Book Binding #76 – Instr. Loni Cuatt. Grades K-1. We all love books! Learn how they are made, then design, create, and bind your own book to take home. Bridges and Tunnels: Investigating Feats of Engineering with STEM activities #25 – Instr. Teddy Sachs. Grades 4-5. Students will engage in a hands-on exploration of Newton’s Third Law of Motion and of forces that push and pull on structures. They’ll make an egg bungee jump and a soda pop can engine. They’ll experiment with a triangular toothpick dome, liquefaction, and corrosion. In Bridges and Tunnels: Investigating Feats of Engineering with STEM activities, children will explore their own engineering and building skills as they create several bridge models. Brilliant Bugs and Wiggly Worms #100 – Instr. Robert Smith. Grades 2-6. Use mini-microscopes to examine the physiology of ladybugs, crickets, snails, mealworms, other wonderful small creatures. Bubbleology #92 – Instr. Leann Legind. Grades K-1. Burst into the world of “bubbleology”. Study surface tension. Learn about chemistry when making “Official Bubbleologist Solution” and fun-shaped bubble wands. See why bubbles are round, why they float, stretch & pop. Get ready to be put into a “Human-sized Bubble.” Check This Out #111 – Instr. Loni Cuatt. Grades 2-3. Calling the curious! Come explore the world around you with science. We will run all sorts of experiments, such as mummification, purifying salt water, and creating mystery goo. Chemical Wizards #55, 72 – Instr. George Lightholder. Grades 2-3 and 2-4. Learn the real science (real fun, too) behind making slime, rubber hand print shirts, bouncing balls, bloody guts, gak (just to name a few) and this year--REAL FLUBBER!!!! This is a double length class ending at 11:45. Contraption Carnival #67 – Instr. Robert Smith. Grades 2-6. Use your engineering skills to create the fastest roller derby car, best parachute, marble roller coasters, creative boats, barges, and etc. as time permits. Crazy About Chemistry #1, 17 – Instr. Leann Legind. Grades K-1 and 2-3. Make a safe home-made chemistry set that you can bring home. Make crystal candy. Discover “holes” in water. Find out the secret of bubble gum. Experiment with safe mystery powders. Create a soda geyser. Please bring a shoe box to class on Monday. Crime Lab #10 – Instr. Andrea Brown. Grades 4-8. Be a CSI (Crime Scene Investigator). Test various powders, liquids and other substances for reactions to chemicals. Test to see if a substance is real blood. Work with lifting fingerprints. Investigate with paper chromatography to study handwriting samples. Using a microscope, observe hair and fibers to see differences /likenesses. Students will use many forensic science tools such as microscopes, hand lenses and fingerprint-lift kit. Students will do research on careers in various aspects of crime scene investigations. We will have a speaker come in to talk with the students. Students will solve mini crimes and use skills learned through the week. The last day of class, students will go into a mock-crime scene to observe “evidence at the scene” and try to solve the crime, based on their learning through the week. Parents are welcome to come and observe on this day. This is a double length class ending at 11:45. CSI Jr. Solve Mysteries like the Big Guys #4 – Instr. Patrice Stanzione. Grades 2-3. Learn how fingerprints, mystery fluids and powders, and paper chromography can solve a silly crime using you brain and your senses. Using the same strategies and activities the big guys do, problem-solve to a logical conclusion while learning new things. Be a science detective and save the day. This is a double length class ending at 11:45. Designing for Disaster #88 – Instr. Loni Cuatt. Grades K-1. Can your building stand up to an earthquake? Can you save a town from a flood? Take on these and other engineering challenges this week. Dissectors Only! #12, 82 – Instr. Paul Burns. Grades 6-8 and 4-5. This class is not for the squeamish. We will do 5 dissections in 5 days! We will learn how to safely observe, open and compare animals to each other. Depending on availability we will dissect five animals or their parts to see how they relate to us. Grades 4-5 and 6-8. Become an Electronics Technician. Learn how to solder and identify components to build a fun take-home project. Emphasis will be placed on reading a schematic diagram and handling tools safely. Explore the Engineer Inside You #37, 65 – Instr. Andrea Brown. Grades 4-5 and 6-8. Students will explore the world of engineering through their own hands-on planning, designing, building, testing, and rebuilding. They will take part in designing and building structures (towers and bridges) out of various materials. They will design and build balloon-powered vehicles, mini catapults, planes and foil boats. They will also delve into “Superhero” Engineering tasks (tallest skyscraper and strongest spider web) as well as other mini engineering challenges to “explore the engineer inside them.” The students (as Engineers) will also do some designing of structures to go along with the Social Studies unit of Native American homes and the Oregon Trail. Gizmos & Gadgets Creating Science Contraptions That Work #34, 49 - Instr. Teddy Sachs. Grades 2-3 and 3-5. Gear up to discover science by constructing weird, wacky contraptions. With this class, students can start building, questioning, creating, and inventing--all the while learning fun physics principles and good science practices. Materials will be formed into objects to be tossed, balanced, spun, flung, and strung-all to demonstrate various principles of physics. We’ll create toys that spin, fling, collide, and whiz while kids grasp the basic concepts of gravity, inertia, balance, and energy. This is a double length class ending at 11:45. Go Green - NXT Robotic City #60, 86, 104 – Instr. Yvonne Bradley. Grades 4-5 and 6-8. You will work in pairs to go through a series of training exercises to prepare you to guide your robot in solving real-world engineering challenges related to renewable energy. After training, you will go on a simulated mission to solve a real-world problem by fixing a power plant, a wind turbine, solar panel on the house roof, a dam, and more. Can you make your city GREEN? This is a double length class ending at 11:45. How to be a Better Science Olympian #28 – Instr. Jennifer Collins. Grades 6-8. Come and learn about how to best prepare for the Science Olympiad as a middle school student. Learn how to study for events, build stronger bridges, and better rockets, among other things. Come and explore your world! Invention Convention #80 – Instr. Robert Smith. Grades 2-6. Use science and engineering skills to create helicopters, super siphons, gliders, and Newton’s cradle while learning about gravity. Learn how to use microscopes, compasses, and similar devices as time allows. Inventor’s Lab #44 – Instr. Robert Smith. Grades 2-6. Learn all about STEM by replicating world-changing inventions, such as an electroscope, telegraph, telephone, and the light bulb. Learn the science of light, mirrors, and magnets. 7

Let the Force (and Motion) be With You #105 – Instr. Andrea Brown. Grades 6-8. Come be an Engineer and a Physicist. Be a “mad scientist.” Students will use Newton’s 3 Laws of Motion to better understand Force and Motion. They will become engineers and physicists as they experiment with cars, ramps, friction and non-friction surfaces. They will make and test a dot- car (motor and pen device to see the travel pattern), and will use other objects to show motion and force. For each of Newton’s Laws, we will have 2-3 experiments where they develop an object to use at each station. They will illustrate their findings and share out with their group. Balloon vehicles will be designed, built and tested. We will also build simple machines and use them to help us understand the 3 laws of motion. We will build Rube Goldberg contraptions to tie in the simple machines with the laws of motion. A marble roller coaster is an example. This is a double length class ending at 11:45. Let the Force Be With You #110 – Instr. Leann Legind. Grades K-1. Get ready to explore the world of force! Learn about about the principles of force, motion, magnetism. You will experiment with magnetic poles, create a marshmallow catapult, race cars on a ramp, play with balloon rockets, and so much more!!! May the force be with you! Let’s Get Physical #8, 36, 58, 81 – Instr. Hai Pham. Grades 3-5. Physical science is the study of the physical world around you. Discover the amazing world of physics and chemistry through experiments and hands-on activities. We will have fun learning about properties of liquids and gases, how matter changes, how sound and static electricity are produced, and all kinds of other physics and chemistry topics. Light Bright #52, 66 – Instr. Leann Legind. Grades K-1 and 2-3. Find out how fast light travels. Use flashlights to explore light principles. Create a real rainbow out of water in the classroom. Important Information about Registering Your Children for Classes

When should I register? Registration is first come, first served. Register early to avoid disappointment. What age must my child be to participate? Grade level is listed on the class schedule. This is the grade your child will be entering in September, 2015. Preschool Students must be 4 years old as of December, 2014 and must be registered for the school year beginning in September, 2015. Where are the classes located? Bixby Elementary, 16446 Wedgeworth Drive in Hacienda Heights (Across the street from Wilson High School). What about lunch time supervision? Your child’s safety and comfort are extremely important to us. Any child who is enrolled in both a 10:15 AM class and a 12:30 PM class the same week will be supervised during the lunch time. Students must bring their own lunch. Activities will be provided when the students have finished eating. There is no additional charge for this supervision. How do I register? 1 Use a separate class application, or photocopy for each student. 2 Fill out all requested information at the top of the application. 3 Fill out all requested information for the classes you want. 4 Unless you have previously purchased a life membership, your membership expires on May 1. If you are joining or rejoining YSC now, write the membership fee.
