Research Journal of Environmental and Earth Sciences 4(5): 511-524, 2012 ISSN: 2041-0492 © Maxwell Scientific Organization, 2012 Submitted: February 07, 2012 Accepted: March 10, 2012 Published: May 15, 2012 Hanjis Activities and Its Impact on Dal Lake and Its Environs (A Case Study of Srinagar City, India) Shahab Fazal and Arshad Amin Department of Geography, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, India Abstract: Nature is the necessary condition for the existence and development of society. But increasing interventions by man in recent past have altered the natural environment to ‘humanize’ it for their benefits. The relationship between man and nature is twofold. On one hand, man’s actions and activities are influenced and conditioned by natural environment. On the other hand, mankind continuously conquers nature and reform geographical surrounding in the process of their development. The bridge between these is man’s productive activity through which he continuously changes his geographical surroundings. Every natural system has its carrying capacity. Over dependency and over exploitation of this system beyond its capacity leads to destruction and disintegration of living and non-living components of the system. The present study focuses on the interaction between ‘hanjis’ and ecologically important Dal Lake and its surroundings in Srinagar city (India). The Dal is one of the beautiful lakes of the world for which Lawrence has said, “Perhaps in the whole world there is no corner as pleasant as the Dal lake”. The study finds that the Hanjis with increase in their population have inflected transformations in and around the lake with their activity. These transformations are leading to deterioration of the Dal lake and its environs and there is an urgent need for intervention for the welfare of the Hanjis and the management of the Dal lake. -

Dal lake receives water from four famous basins namely Hazratbal, Bod dal, Gagribal and Nageen. Literature published on Dal lake indicates that water quality parameters like BOD, electrical conductivity, nitrate, dissolved oxygen etc show spatial and monthly variations due to increase in the urbanization, unreasonable activity, lack of knowledge of local residents, inflow coming from 15 major drains of Srinagar city, plastic debris, stagnation of lake water, and other various factors. The water sample shows poor quality of water near the house boats and banks of lake as compared to open area of water body. There is a drastic change in the quality of water from the area of contamination, around house boats and open area of water body indicating heavy organic pollution to the water body from the contamination areas and habitation. Further, sudden and unexpected rise in the temperature in valley restricts the growth of various aquatic species present in the dal lake, rise in temperature may become fatal to fish growth, phytoplanktons, zooplankton etc. -

International Journal of Multidisciplinary Research and Development 2015; 2(2): 462-469 IJMRD 2015; 2(2): 462-469 www.allsubjectjournal.com Impact factor: 3.672 Dal lake of Kashmir: Problems, prospects and Received: 03-02-2015 perspectives Accepted: 18-02-2015 E-ISSN: 2349-4182 P-ISSN: 2349-5979 Manzoor Ahmad Khan Manzoor Ahmad Khan Abstract M.A (Tourism) The Dal lake in Kashmir is a fresh altitude fresh water lake. This lake is main source of attraction for National Eligibility Test (NET) Qualified tourists and is main source of economy for the people in its catchment area. During the course of time, SRINAGAR (J&K) INDIA this lake has shrinked to a great extent due to encroachments. Further the discharge of effluents, sewage, sediments and other nutrients has make this lake eutrophic (nutrient rich).this eutrophication results in the over growth of aquatic plants, which in turn decreases the oxygen supply of lake and ultimately its death. If timely measures are not taken to mitigate these severe effects on lake, then the lake will die of its own death. So there is a great need of taking serious steps at individual, community and at government level to save this lake. Keywords: Eutrophication, limnology, lotic, lentic, phytoplankton, zooplankton 1. Introduction The Indian Sub-continent spans the latitudinal range from 80S (Kanyakumari) to 360N (Kashmir) with different attitude ranging from mean sea level up to 5000 meter above mean seal level (m.s.l.). There are mainly two types of climatic zones the truly tropical region encompassing the Peninsular Indian below the Vindhyana mountains covering the areas between 80 and 230N Latitude, and the temperate cum arid zone between 240and 360N. -

Kawoosa J&K Lakes and Waterways Development Authority Srinagar Introduction: Dal Lake, the famous lake of Kashmir in Srinagar City as it’s jewel is situated in the heart of City between 3406’N & 34010’N latitude and & 74050’E & 74054’E at an elevation of about 1583 Meters from mean sea level. Historically the lake has been the centre of Kashmiri Civilisation since BC era. This lake is the main tour- ist attraction within the City for its uniqueness of staying in Houseboats, the Shikara rides and the floating gar- dens. The lake is a major source of veg- etable supply to the city apart from pro- duction of fish. Large quantity of Nadru (Lotus Stem) and vegetables are culti- vated within the lake in water, on land masses and floating gardens in addition to fish production for human consump- tion. Raw water from the lake is lifted for two of the City’s water treatment plants at Nishat and Pokhribal and after treatment supplied as potable water.
