May | June 2018 GRAY WING ELECTRIC ABSTRACTIONS Through June 10 Jayne Behman, mm13 Daniel Leighton, Permission to Enter Robert Chapman, Z-89 (detail) Electric Abstractions focuses on three California artists using computer technology to create contemporary fine art. Daniel Leighton, Robert Chapman, and Jayne Behman have been creating images digitally for years—drawing with digits and painting with pixels. Jayne Behman and Robert Chapman both have had formal training and years of experience and backgrounds in traditional studio art. Their forays into digital art started after they had already established themselves as artists. “For SLOMA, this is an opportunity to embrace new media, celebrate three artistic talents with visually compelling artwork, and present an exhibition that also appeals to younger audiences,” said Ruta Saliklis, SLOMA curator. To mark the exhibition’s closing, SLOMA presents pianist and multi-media artist Josh Nelson for a special performance in the Gray Wing pn Sunday, June 10 at 5 PM. Tickets $20 general seating. u SELECTIONS: BAY AREA June 15 to August 19 SLOMA is showcasing the mysterious oil paintings by Anne Subercaseaux and the magically woven metal sculptures by Flora Davis in Selections: Bay Area. This long- overdue release unites the pioneers of two major musical movements: Kirchen co-founded the original “Americana” band, Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen, and his trademark Telecaster licks drove their hit “Hot Rod Lincoln” into the Top 10 in 1972. De Lone dropped out of Harvard to start Eggs Over Easy, moving to London and recording with Jimi Hendrix’s producer/manager and The Animals’ bass player Chas Chandler in 1970. The Eggs are the progenitors of British pub rock, the first link in the chain to punk rock, new wave and beyond. Backed by both their all-star British and American bands, Transatlanticana finds Kirchen and de Lone trading songwriting credits and lead vocals on this soulful and rocking collection. They kick it off with the timely “Hounds of the Bakersfield,” a tribute to the late Merle Haggard and the Bakersfield, CA sound. Kirchen and de Lone cut the album in Austin and London, capturing on disc the best of their 30-year collaboration. -

GLENN TILBROOK Mention Glenn Tilbrook and most people may immediately think of Squeeze. After all, with his writing partner Chris Difford, Tilbrook was responsible for Top Ten hits all around the world such as “Tempted”, “Hourglass”, “Cool For Cats” and “Up The Junction”. Ever since their first EP in 1977, Squeeze has delighted audiences with their brand of honky-tonk new wave and pithy lyricism, while their stock in the music world has seen the likes of Jools Hol- land, Paul Carrack and Elvis Costello all contribute to their work. However, since an acrimonious split in 1998 Squeeze has been on the backburner. Although you might forgive him for resting on his laurels after 13 albums and countless tours all over the world, Tilbrook has continued to write and perform with the same enthusiasm that he brought to Squeeze’s earliest recordings. With his two solo albums, “The Incomplete Glenn Tilbrook” and “Transatlantic Ping-Pong”, he proved he’s lost none of the joie-de-vivre that became Squeeze’s trademark. For 2009’s album “Pandemonium Ensues”, he injected some fresh faces by recruiting new band The Fluffers and some prestigious guests in the shape of Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis. This has been complemented by a conversational live show that is delightfully shambling in its approach – Tilbrook loves blurring the bound- ary between crowd and performer by performing requests and even taking his audience for walkabouts to set up impromptu gigs! Although a Squeeze reunion had always looked unlikely, Tilbrook and Difford’s paths slowly began to cross with more frequency, leading to a series of low-key gigs together in 2007. -
