Passoa Advisor Graduate Program in Entomology ABSTRACT The phylogenetics, systematics, taxonomy, and biology of Gelechioidea (Insecta: Lepidoptera) are investigated. This superfamily is probably the second largest in all of Lepidoptera, and it remains one of the least well known. Taxonomy of Gelechioidea has been unstable historically, and definitions vary at the family and subfamily levels. In Chapters Two and Three, I review the taxonomy of Gelechioidea and characters that have been important, with attention to what characters or terms were used by different authors. I revise the coding of characters that are already in the literature, and provide new data as well. Chapter Four provides the first phylogenetic analysis of Gelechioidea to include molecular data. I combine novel DNA sequence data from Cytochrome oxidase I and II with morphological matrices for exemplar species. The results challenge current concepts of Gelechioidea, suggesting that traditional morphological characters that have united taxa may not be homologous structures and are in need of further investigation. Resolution of this problem will require more detailed analysis and more thorough characterization of certain lineages. To begin this task, I conduct in Chapter Five an in- depth study of morphological evolution, host-plant selection, and geographical distribution of a medium-sized genus Depressaria Haworth (Depressariinae), larvae of ii which generally feed on plants in the families Asteraceae and Apiaceae. -

A variety of collecting methods was used, including netting, light attracting, light trapping and pheromone trapping. The specimens were identified by the currently available pictorial sources and determination keys. Many were also sent to specialists for confirmation or identification. The majority of the data was from Kanawha County, reflecting the area of more intensive sampling effort by the senior author. This imbalance of data between Kanawha County and other counties should even out with further sampling of the area. Key Words: Appalachian Mountains, -

1998 Forest Health Highlights
The Resource Over 5 percent (2.1 million acres) of Iowa is covered by trees and forests. Our forests have significant impacts on our agricultural-based economy, protection of our drinking water supply, critical wildlife habitat and overall enjoyment of the place that we call Iowa. Wood industries employ over 7,000 Iowans, producing lumber and high quality wood products. Trees in our small and large communities, our “urban forests,” increase property values and conserve cooling and heating energy. Our forests are vital to our state’s future. Because our forest resources are valuable to the citizens of Iowa, the Forestry Division of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) began monitoring forest and tree health conditions in the late 1970’s. This monitoring effort today is used to determine overall forest and tree health conditions, the status of natural and exotic insect and disease problems, and to provide up-to-date information for private and public managers to aid in the sustained management of Iowa’s forest resources. Monitoring Efforts for 1998 Estimates of serious forest and tree insects, diseases, and weather impacts, were determined by aerial surveys of over 141,832 acres of representative forested areas across the state conducted during the Summer of 1998. Visual surveys from DNR Foresters, municipal foresters, and trained volunteers were also evaluated, as well as aerial survey assistance from the USFS , in determining forest and tree health conditions and locations of pest problems. Potentially the greatest threat to our forests is from the famous “Gypsy Moth,” (not yet established in our state, but potentially serious) which required placement of 6,000 pheromone survey traps by the IDALS State Entomologist's Office and selected volunteers to determine infestation areas and sites in need of quick eradication efforts. -

Favorite Nectar Plants : spots. Flight Period : early March – early Mock Orange, Milkweeds, Thistles, November, peaks in May, July and large showy flowers. Larval Host September. Favorite Nectar Plants: Plants : Native Willows, Quaking Many, especially garden flowers, such as Oregano and Lavender. Aspen and other poplars, Red Alder Larval Host Plants : Garden Brassicae, especially broccoli and cabbage. Anise Swallowtail ( Papilio zelicaon) Identification : Large. Mostly black, Cedar Hairstreak ( Mitoura grynea ) centrally yellow, with row of blue dots Identification : Small. Varying brown above, below buff brown on hindwing. Flight Period : late with violet tint, variable white postmedian line, small tails on March – late September, peaks in May, hindwings. Flight Period : late March – early August, peaks in July-August. Favorite Nectar Plants : May-June. Favorite Nectar Plants : Goldenrods, Yarrow, Many flowers, mostly large and showy. Dandelion, Clovers, Red Flowering Currant. Larval Host Plants : Garden Parsley Larval Host Plants : Western Red Cedar, Incense Cedar and Dill, Angelica, Cow Parsnip, many others. -

Data concerning distribution, type species or type genus, designation, incorrect spelling and emendation, preoccupation and replacement names, synonyms and homonyms, nomina nuda, and rejected names are given. Several new combinations and synonyms are provided. Key words: Sesioidea, systematics, taxonomy, zoogeographic regions. Introduction: Almost 25 years have passed since HEPPNER & DUCKWORTH (1981) published their 'Classification of the Superfamily Sesioidea'. In the meantime great progress has been made in the investigation and classification of the family Sesiidae (clearwing moths). Important monographs covering the Palearctic and Nearctic regions, and partly South America or South-East Asia have been made available (EICHLIN & DUCKWORTH 1988, EICHLIN 1986, 1989, 1995b and 1998, ŠPATENKA et al. 1999, KALLIES & ARITA 2004), and numerous descriptions of new taxa as well as revisions of genera and species described by earlier authors have been published, mainly dealing with the Oriental region (ARITA & GORBUNOV 1995c, ARITA & GORBUNOV 1996b etc.). -

Lilac (Ash) Borer Pupal skins extrude from trunk Name and Description—Podosesia syringae (Harris) [Lepidoptera: Sesiidae] Adult lilac (ash) borers are moths that vary in color from brown to yel- low to orange. They have clear wings with a span of about 1-1 1/8 inches (26-28 mm) and appear wasp-like (fig. 1). Larvae are about 1 inch (2.5 cm) long and are white with brown heads (fig. 2). Hosts—Ash and lilac Life Cycle—There is one generation per year. Mature borer larvae over- winter in tunnels under the bark. Adult moths emerge from March through June to lay eggs on the bark of host trees. The larvae bore into trunks and branches of the sapwood of trees during the summer. It can also lead to broken branches. The leaves on affected branches turn brown as the branch dies. Extensive mining can also lead to tree death. Entrances to lar- val mines often appear as sunken or cankered areas on the bark of the trunk or branch. Dark, moist sawdust can be found around the Figure 2. Ash borer larva.
