They have to provide the first line of defence against careless invasions by mowers, feet, even livestock (fig. 1) They form at one and the same time the start and the finish of the border, leading the eye to statuesque and imposing plants at the rear, or allowing the eye to come to a comfortable stop at the front. Which all sounds rather prosaic, not to say functional. One of the pleasures of last year’s gardening for me was being able to see some of my ‘front liners’ with fresh eyes, not just as the useful plants they undoubtedly are, but also as the star performers they can be in their own right. It all started with the flowering of Jovellana violacea (fig. 2). Having bought it as a very small plant on the 2002 Autumn Weekend, I planted it where I could keep an eye on it. Each spring, in my ignorance, I cut it back to tidy it up, assuming that it would produce flowers later in the summer: exactly the wrong thing to do. This interesting little shrublet flowers on the previous year’s wood in early summer, and Addison © Twink with time will form a thicket of upright stems, bearing pale, whitish-mauve pouched flowers with spotted throats. My poor plant, of course, never had mature enough stems to produce so much as a spot, let alone whole pouches. -

The main distribution will begin in December and will continue into the new year. The seeds offered originate from various sources and cannot be guaranteed true to name. Neither The Alpine Garden Society nor any official of the Society can be held responsible for what is supplied. Members are reminded that named cultivars and hybrids cannot be relied upon to come true, and plants raised from seed from cultivars should not be labelled with the names of those cultivars. Seeds of many species are in short supply and we can never have enough to meet all requests. Members who request very rare or popular species must realise that they are likely to be disappointed and are advised to spread their requests throughout a variety of seeds on the list. 41 (2): (2017) 221-247 Original Scientific Paper Phytosociological characteristics of seven poorly known associations of serpentine rocky grassland vegetation of the order Halacsyetalia sendtneri in Serbia Slobodan Jovanović✳, Eva Kabaš, Nevena Kuzmanović, Ksenija Jakovljević, Snežana Vukojičić, Dmitar Lakušić University of Belgrade, Faculty of Biology, Institute of Botany and Botanical Garden, Takovska 43, 11000 Belgrade, Serbia ABSTRACT: Although it is well known that dry open rocky grassland vegetation on shallow serpentine (ultramafic) soils represents one of the most interesting, highly endemic, and often studied vegetation types, the authors of several detailed studies of Balkan serpentine flora and vegetation suggested that the vegetation cover of Balkan ultramafics needs further exploration due to its heterogeneity. In this article, phytosociological characteristics of seven poorly known associations of grassland communities from the order Halacsyetalia sendtneri are analysed. In order to provide additional descriptions of these communities (with diagnosis and lists of diagnostic, dominant, and constant species), check their phytosociological validity, and confirm their syntaxonomical position, the stands of these communities were compared with 18 associations distributed throughout the area of serpentine outcrops in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia. The results of cluster analysis confirmed that the analysed heretofore poorly known associations in the vegetation of open rocky serpentine grasslands are floristically well-defined. -

The spontaneous medicinal flora of Zlatar Mountain was studied in the aim of realizing the possibilities of its sustainable use for the needs of the pharmaceutical industry. The special attention was paid to genera Orchis, Ophrys, Plathanthera, Gimnadenia, etc. from the orchid family (Orchidaceae) of which salep is made (Tuber salep). Salep is a typical mucous drug (contains over 50% of mucus), which is very beneficial and useful. The primary role of salep is to heal and strengthen the organism and urge the sexual and every other biological ability. Orchids of which salep is made (Orchis coriophora, Orchis laxiflora, Orchis morio, Orchis mascula, Orchis pallens, Orchis purpurea, Orchis simia, Orchis tridentata and Orchis ustulata) are to be found on numerous habitats of Zlatar (in the bright forests, clearing areas and on forest meadows). -

We hypothesized here that, since vascular plants could be good surrogates of lichens in these ecosystems, it would be possible to assess the overall biodiversity of riparian habitats using plant data only. -

The weather spanned everything from reasonable to excellent, and we certainly made the best of it. Day 1 Wednesday 16th May We met in the bar of the Lambert Arms, introduced ourselves and got down to the business of discussing orchids. This orchid season had been an odd one so far, with several species delayed by the slow start to the year, but others earlier than expected. A couple of these earlier-than-usual species were Burnt Orchid and Man Orchid. As such, we tried something new and headed north to Hoo Bit in Hertfordshire. This patch of woodland and meadow has a lovely mixture of orchids, and it didn’t take us long to spot a number of Fly Orchids – within a few minutes we must have easily seen forty spikes. Twayblades were abundant, as were Common Spotted Orchid rosettes, which hinted at how the meadow must look in high summer. -

Sci., 22: 30–39 As a result of the floristic investigations of Belassitsa Mt carried out between 2011 and 2012, 1515 species belonging to 517 genera and 106 plant families were recorded. The most numerous representatives were from the families Asteraceae (183), Poaceae (121), Fabaceae (113), Lamiaceae (83), Caryophyllaceae (80), Scrophulariaceae (79), Brassicaceae (77). There are 41 Balkan endemic species and 4 Bulgarian endemic species in the flora of investigated area.
