The Encyclopedia of Tribology is the culmination of collaborative efforts among many authors, section editors, reviewers, and production editors. It is an international endeavor with authors from many countries, representing contributions from universities, industries, government laboratories, and research institutes. The Encyclopedia of Tribology would not have become a reality without the enthusiastic contributions of authors and section editors from their precious knowledge and many years of experience in the field, the careful critique by reviewers, and the detailed editing by editors of Springer. The Encyclopedia of Tribology contains 649 entries in 30 technical areas. It covers not only the traditional subjects, such as friction, wear, lubricants, and lubrication, but also topics related to biomedical and biomechanical designs, condition-based monitoring, molecular dynamics simulations, and materials science. Its scope spans from tribological science rooted in classical theories, to modern surface and interfacial engineering, from microscale contacts in compo- nents to automotive and aerospace tribology, from tribological designs to manufacturing processes, from instrumenta- tions to testing techniques, and from analytical-numerical methods to technological innovations. In addition to the hard copy, the Encyclopedia of Tribology has an online version, which makes it dynamic and allows the team to modify and enrich its content as the field continues to evolve. Tribology is “the science and technology of interacting surfaces in relative motion and of related subjects and practices,” as defined in the 1975 textbook, Principles of Tribology, of J. Halling. The term “tribology” is derived from the Greek word, tribos, meaning rubbing. It was coined in the well-known Jost Report,“Lubrication (Tribology), Education and Research: A Report on the Present Position and Industry’s Needs,” in 1966, made by the British Department of Trade and Industry Committee, headed by Peter Jost, now President of International Tribology Council. The term “tribology” has been rapidly adopted worldwide; for example, the American Society of Lubrication Engineers (ASLE), founded in 1944 in Chicago, USA, was renamed the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers in 1987, and one of her technical publications, Transactions of ASLE, has now become Tribology Transactions. The use of friction to make fire can be dated back to the prehistoric Paleolithic age. The ability to produce and control fire by rubbing tree branches against each other changed the ancient human life – it improved health, provided warmth and comfort, and extended human activities beyond daylight hours. Fire-making is perhaps the first engineering technology derived from tribology, and this contribution of friction marks one of the tipping points in the evolution of human civilization. Lubrication engineering is probably one of the earliest engineering professions, as evidenced in many archaeological finds and artifacts. Fast forward several thousand years, tribology has permeated every corner of modern industries and advancements of modern transportation and energy production technologies. “Without tribology...... that is surfaces rolling on each other, surfaces sliding over each other and surfaces rubbing on each other, life would be impossible,” wrote Peter Jost in the Foreword of Halling’s Principles of Tribology. Many phenomena in tribology are complicated, and many aspects of tribological research are not easy. For example, we still do not have a governing equation for wear of materials, like Newton’s law for mechanics, because wear is not a singular phenomenon and depends on the system in question. Therefore, tribology must be multidisciplinary, requiring the integration of basic science, modeling and simulation, and the support of design and manufacturing. Modern tribology has embraced and intersected with advances in other disciplines, such as surface physics and chemistry, materials science and engineering, a wide range of micro- and nanoscale characterization techniques, multiscale simulations, and high-speed computations. There are many challenges awaiting us; but more than ever, we are better equipped to confront them. The Encyclopedia of Tribology is born at the critical moment of global energy and environmental concerns when we strive to advance systems that are energy-efficient and durable. These volumes intend to provide a quick reference to many important topics in tribology and related areas. Each entry is a short article that offers the definition, a short explanation of the underlying scientific fundamentals, and demonstrations of applications. Links to vi Preface

related entries are provided, along with references. These short articles are suitable for undergraduate and graduate students, school teachers, researchers, and practicing engineers. Overall, the Encyclopedia of Tribology should well serve schools and universities, industries, government laboratories, and research institutes, as well as the public at large. This encyclopedia project is the work of hundreds of individuals. We wish to express our sincere thanks to all authors, section editors, and reviewers for their hard work and cooperation to make this project a reality, and to the production editors at Springer for following through every nuance of the publication process. Happy Reading!
