Another monthly Blarney update from the PR team at Scoil Mhuire Gathering gan Smal, Blarney. 2013 by Alex Herlihy

Next year Blarney will be host to a gathering. What this means is that Blarney will be inviting all former residents back to the area as a way of bringing the community together. As a part of this the Soil Mhuire Gan Smal P.R team have taken on board the task of helping with a promotional video for Blarney, with help from Derry O’Leary, Dreamline Productions. For this video we went around Blarney with Derry to interview tourists, local businesses and the local people. The video will Transition Year Students take a trip highlight all Blarney has to offer and show our former to Cork Opera House residents that Blarney is the place to be. Two Competitions will be held during the year for our Bank to take part in; a regional competition and a national competition if the regional goes the way we hope. The 1st place prize in the National Competition is €5,000 for our school so there is a great incentive to win. The Bank will be up and running shortly.

Fun-filled event in

by Christine Twomey and Kayleigh Cronin On October 22nd the Transition Year students spent two nights in the activity centre, Blackwater Outdoor Centre. It was not like anyone imagined, it was far better than expected! They had high quality equipment; hygienic dormitories, mouth- watering food and the staff were pleasant and helpful at all times. Blackwater had numerous of activities to keep us entertained, such as archery, river tubing, zorbing, high ropes and much more. No matter what we did, we always came out smiling or laughing. Even when we were thought that the history tour and the wilderness survival were going to be boring - but we were completely wrong! They were very interesting and you would learn a lot from them. But the one thing this trip did was increase our encounters with others that we wouldn’t have spoken to in the year before. Finally we would like to get this opportunity to thank the staff in the Blackwater Outdoor Centre for such an enjoyable experience that we know no one will forget!

It may be more serious than you Photo; Donagh think. Glavin Gum disease is inflammation of the tissues which support the teeth and attach them to the jaw. It arises when plaque and tartar build up on the teeth. Plaque can be removed with careful toothbrushing and flossing. Tartar forms when plaque is hardened by minerals such as calcium present in saliva. Tartar has to be removed professionally by your dentist or hygienist. Smoking also has a very harmful effect on the gums. Every smoker has gum disease but some smokers are affected worse than others. You may not notice the gum disease until it is quite advanced. Therefore, it is important to visit your dentist regularly and to be aware of the following signs: red swollen gums, bleeding gums, bad breath, bad taste, gum recession, teeth starting to drift apart, teeth starting to loosen. What can you do to help prevent/treat gum disease? Thoroughly and gently brush your teeth and gums for 2 to 4 minutes twice a day using a fluoride toothpaste. Clean between the teeth with floss or interdental toothbrushes. Visit your dentist regularly for a check up and a professional clean to remove plaque and tartar. At your next visit, why not ask your dentist or hygienist how best to keep your teeth clean? It could save your teeth and improve your health! Other jobs we will be doing over the next month include: lifting and dividing herbaceous perennials, wind lopping roses, pruning of established apple and pear trees, spreading compost and dig- ging over vegetable beds, leaf collection to form next year’s leaf mold, lifting dahlias, begonias to overwinter inside, fleecing tree ferns to protect from frost, planting of new bare root hedging and trees. The magic of Christmas will be showcased once again in South Kerry this festive season when Molly Gallivan's Cottage and Farm in Bonane, near Kenmare, will be transformed into a magical Winter Wonderland. For the last two years Santa’s Christmas show at Molly Gallivan’s cottage ‘Memories of Christmas Past’ has caught the imagination of both young and old. Santa’s dramatic entry down the chimney is one of the shows highlights which is full of fun and gifts for all chil- dren. Adults will relive their childhood dreams while children will enjoy the magic and fun of this traditional Christmas experience. Santa and Mrs Claus have chosen Molly's enchanti- ng 200 year old cottage for this fascinating show which begins with Santa's dramatic entry down the chimney. Santa will meet each child, have a nice friendly chat and then give them a gift. Mrs Claus will be busy preparing for Santa’s big journey, baking bread over the open fire, making butter and ironing Santa’s clothes. However, she will take time to show you around the cottage and Santa’s bedroom, making the visit a unique personal journey in the lead up to Christmas. Other events on these magical evenings include following the pathway to Bethlehem and visiting the live crib. Santa’s original toy shop should be a big hit. You can also enjoy Book Online: kenmarewinterwonderland.com watching a Christmas movie in Santa’s unique thatched cottage. Mince pies, mulled wine and other niceties can be purchased in Molly’s old tea shop and you can browse in their unique Christmas gift shop while you are there. A photographer is on hand to capture this magical experience, but you may also bring your camera, and don’t forget warm clothing! All bookings to be made in advance on 087 2433894 / 064 6640714.
