Unlike the abolitionist feminist movement, the pro-sex feminist movement, which began in the United States during the 1980s, asserts that representations of the body and of pleasure are areas that must be taken over by women and sexual minorities and that pornography must not be subject to control by the patriarchal state. It also calls for the legalisation of sex work; female sex workers, porn actresses, strip teasers and lesbians have begun to speak out and to talk about themselves, generating a new culture that includes articles, books, films, documentaries, music, comics, artistic performances, etc. Made up of about 20 interviews filmed in the United States, France and Spain, the documentary gives the floor to pro-sex activists and follows the evolution of the movement from the 80s to the present, from its pioneers and its successors to its proactive activists in France and Barcelona. It also reveals previously unknown images directly tied to the subject (excerpts from films produced by activists, updates on their activities, archives of their works, performances and street demonstrations, etc.) Whether it’s referred to as Pro Sex, Post Porn or queer, the movement is a creative and revolutionary one that calls on us to reflect on what a pornographic image is, what sex work is, what gender is, and what the whole point of feminism is. Disturbing, provocative and innovative, ‘Mutantes’ aims to play a saving role as it splits from popular discourse, which would have it that sex is best practiced in the bedroom, that women’s dignity depends on their ‘good’ behaviour and passivity, that the only feminist themes to be debated are gender violence and the wearing of headscarves. ‘Mutantes’ allows us to see that activists are already occupying other playing fields, inventing other ways of having sex and of thinking of sexuality and gender. About Virginie Despentes BIOGRAPHY Publishes Rape me (aka Fuck me) in 1993 and turns it into a film seven years later, co-directed by Coralie Trinh Thi and released in cinemas.

Contact: [email protected] Les Jolies choses/Pretty Things (Synkronized USA, 11.6.2007) The main reason for seeing Les Jolies choses/Pretty Things is Marion Cotillard. If you’ve seen her in La Vie en rose, you know she’s a terrific, possibly great actress. Pretty Things offers the chance to see her tackle a similar role six years earlier, and she’s almost as riveting as she is as Edith Piaf. Written and directed by Gilles Paquet-Brenner, Pretty Things is the story of identical twins (both played by Cotillard) with opposite personalities. Lucie is carefree and outgoing, the favorite of her father (Olivier Granier), while Marie is withdrawn, considered ugly by la père. Naturally, Lucie becomes a coke-sniffing nympho, running off to Paris to do anything she has to survive, including performing in a porno film. Lucie develops a platonic relationship with Nicolas (Stomy Bugsy), a songwriter, and is offered a recording contract even though she can’t sing. So Marie, who can, is summoned from the country. While Marie performs in a club before recording VIPs, Lucie commits suicide. Marie impulsively assumes her sister’s identity, shedding her drab bohemian garb for the revealing attire of, we’re told several times, a whore.

French Studies, Vol. LX, No. 1, 63–77 doi:10.1093/fs/kni287 THE REBELLIOUS BODY AS PARODY: BAISE-MOI BY VIRGINIE DESPENTES NICOLE FAYARD Abstract When her debut novel Baise-moi was published in 1993, Virginie Despentes was Downloaded from hailed as the pioneer of a new genre of feminist literature. The boldness of the novel’s plot, its angry depiction of female sexual pleasure and gratuitous violence, and its explicit criticism of contemporary Western society have earned this ambiguous work a reputation for subversion. This article argues that the novel’s apparent subversiveness and its popular success are the result http://fs.oxfordjournals.org/ of Despentes’s parodic reworking of the conventions of the noir thriller, and in particular of her critical revisiting of the topos of the femme fatale. Reappro- priating and challenging traditional canons and representations, Baise-moi attacks phallocentrism through the exploration of female pleasure and the inter- vention of the female body. The text thus becomes highly disturbing and critical of the structures that contain women’s autonomy. It also explores ideas that remain central to contemporary feminism with regard to women’s sexual identity; remaining taboos about the body; the relationship between women and the sexual industry, and sexual oppression. Helping to release women’s at Universidade de So Paulo on October 25, 2016 bodies from existing representations and to question categories, Baise-moi might indeed reclaim a voice for women. • Adapting Despentes' Baise-Moi for Cinema
FROM THE OTHER SIDE OF THE GUN TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE CAMERA: ADAPTING DESPENTES' BAISE-MOI FOR CINEMA Thomas Muzart Ph.D student in French, The Graduate Center, CUNY Graduate Teaching Fellow, Baruch College, CUNY [email protected] Abstract : “C'est moins spectacle qu'au cinéma” (72) says Manu in Baise-moi (1993), after her first murder. While this comparison between reality and cinema underlines the lack of effect reality has, compared to the power of images, such a desire for cinematographic effects also represents the protagonists' will to not merely be the agents of their lives but the directors of their cinematography. However, despite the attempt to achieve a filmic aesthetic, the unusual violent and sexual acts performed lack the desired spectacularity. In this article, I argue that the characters’ will to direct images and the frustration deriving from the lack of cinematography runs parallel with Virginie Despentes' decision to adapt her novel into a film. Despentes' style, albeit aggressive, does not match the violence of the actions committed by her characters. In mobilizing Robert Stam's concept of adaptation, I show how, in focusing on the performance of the violent and pornographic reality imagined by the protagonists, the adaptation represents the cinematic actualization of the protagonists’ actions in the novel. Their position on the right side of the gun to shoot at all opponents corresponds to Despentes and Trinh Thi’s decision to place themselves on the right side of the camera to challenge a bourgeois voyeuristic audience. Keywords : Adaptation, Feminism, Scandal, Abjection, Sexuality, Agency FROM THE OTHER SIDE OF THE GUN TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE CAMERA: ADAPTING DESPENTES' BAISE-MOI FOR CINEMA “Not one of us has told the entire story of Baise-moi,” wrote Virginie Despentes on her blog in February 2005 after the death of Karen Bach 1 , one of the film’s two lead actresses.

Colette, Leduc, Despentes: The Ordinary, the Failed, and the Abject by Marion Elizabeth Phillips A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in French and the Designated Emphasis in Women, Gender and Sexuality in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Michael Lucey, Chair Professor Debarati Sanyal Professor Dora Zhang Summer 2019 Abstract Colette, Leduc, Despentes: The Ordinary, the Failed, and the Abject by Marion Elizabeth Phillips Doctor of Philosophy in French Designated Emphasis in Women, Gender and Sexuality University of California, Berkeley Professor Michael Lucey, Chair This dissertation explores how the concepts of the ordinary, of failure, and of abjection shape the works of three French women writers across the twentieth century and into the twenty-first. I engage with theories of the quotidian, queer and affect theory, feminist literary criticism and work on life-writing, and sexuality studies. Each of the writers under investigation here demands a reorientation to their texts from readers, as styles and subject matter shift to challenge patriarchal discourse. I focus on the last two original works of Colette (1873-1954), which experiment with her short forms and observational style. I connect her insistence on material objects to the everyday existence and corporeal realities of an aging writer. I then turn to Violette Leduc (1907-1972), a little-known protégée of Simone de Beauvoir whose writings on love and sex between women were censored by her publishers. Finally, I connect Colette’s fashioning of feminine identity to that which is systematically dismantled by Virginie Despentes.

  • "… Le Balzac Du Xxie, Ce Sera Un Auteur De Série"? Klassik & Netflix
Balzac goes Netflix (or, in this case, HBO)? As a 21st century 'comédie (in)humaine', Despentes' own Vernon Subutex (2015/2017) evolves in a dynamic zone of tension between (so-called) high and popular culture, canonical tradition and digital mediality: instantaneously (and somewhat stereo- typically) situated, by numerous critics, in Balzac's lineage, it epitomizes, at the same time, a new type of 'Netflix literature', co-shaped by an aesthetics of digital TV seriality. After some preliminary reflections on the insistent search for a 'new Balzac' in contemporary French literature and on Despentes' specific status between marginality and mainstream, this article explores various facets of her multi-layered trilogy: an extensive social and media novel, Vernon Subutex is also a sophisticated meta-novel, anticipating its metamorphoses across the media. An analysis of the trilogy's adaptation history in theater and TV proves particularly enlightening: by contrast, the Vernon Subutex TV series (2019) vividly illustrates the creative and ideological potential of a literary narrative that finally propels us, in the company of Balzac, on a transmedial journey "au crépuscule du troisième millénaire". "[…] le Balzac du XXIe, ce sera un auteur de série, genre The Wire", so Virginie Despentes (Einhorn 2015) unter doppelter Bezugnahme auf den französischen Kanon und jene von 2002 bis 2008 produzierte US-amerikanische Krimi-Drama- TV-Serie, die der Daily Telegraph (2009) als "arguably the greatest television programme ever made" würdigt; "deliberately dense, dark and difficult to watch", knüpft The Wire in der Tat intendiert an den Roman des 19.
