The 58th Field Artillery Brigade had its ongm in the World War, with three field artillery regiments, the 122nd, the 123rd and the 124th. The old Illinois First Cavalry was converted, before leaving Chicago in 1917, for field training in Texas, into a field artillery regiment and designated the 122nd. Organized as a squadron of cavalry in 1894, it became a full cavalry regiment in 1898, for volunteer service in the Spanish-American War.

The 123rd Field Artillery was converted from the old SAMUEL T. LAWTON Sixth Illinois Infantry units. The present Headquarters Battery, 58th Field Ar­ tillery Brigade, was organized by General Frank R. Schwengel and Federally recognized as a horse-drawn unit on April 26, 1926, under command of Captain Frederick J. Liffert. Since Captain Liffert's retirement in 1933, Raymond Stults has been Battery Commander. The battery's first tour of field training was at Camp Knox, Kentucky, in 1926. Since then, it has had eight annual tours at Camp McVoy, Wisconsin; four at Camp Grant, Illinois, and has taken part in the Mich­ RAYMOND STULTS JOSEPH P. KREUSER igan Second Army maneuvers in 1936. It also had Captain Second Lieutenant seven days of special training at Camp Henry Horner, Springfield, in November, 1939. In December, 1938, the 58th Field Artillery Brigade, Headquarters Battery, probably the last horse-drawn unit in the United States, was redesignated as a motor­ drawn organization. In addition to the regular duties of the battery, gun 58TH FIELD ARTILLERY BRIGADE crews were organized in 1937 and 1939, and the offi­ cers of the 58th Brigade fired their ammunition allow­ ance with their own gun crews. The average continuous service of the non-commis­ sioned officers of the battery totals about 10 years, * with some of the older enlisted men boasting 14 to 18 years.

FACTUAL HISTORY W ILLI S F. BU NNELL Band Leader The 123rd Field Artillery Band was organized and mus­ tered in April 11, 1937, at Macomb, Illinois. I t was organ­ ized by its present warrant officer, Willis F. Bunnell, who has had wide experience in the band field. He was the organizer and still is the conductor of four school bands in McDonough County and he also served on the Mexican B:irder as a bandsman. (Continitcd on page 487)

The unit, with its full strength of 66, participated in the Second Army maneuvers, Michigan, August, 1936. The battery's officer personnel was completed on Octo­ ber 21, 1936, when Second Lieutenant A. Veterane was assigned for duty. In 1937-38-39 the battery participated in field trammg at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin, and in winter maneuvers in Springfield, November, 1939. In March, 1939, the Major Risburg Pistol Trophy was awarded to the battery's pistol team for high score in the Battalion pistol match. In August of the same year, the battery saw its first encampment, making up for its lack of background with enthusiasm, honest effort and a will to make itself a credit to the regiment. Soon after its return from camp, it moved into its new armory in Alton.
