Page 1 Website:http://www.whitlockfamilyassociation.com The past couple of months have been taken up with recording and cataloguing the collection of Wills I brought back from Salt Lake City in September. The problem with cataloguing new information is the Internet is always there and it always so tempting to go searching for additional details, While the collection of Yorkshire Wills added great new information to the WHITLOCK12 and WHITLOCK21 families it was the WHITLOCK57 family that added the most detail, much of it from those forays into the Internet. This issue of the Newsletter is primarily focused on this last Yorkshire family, The Whitelocks of Yorkshire and Delaware. The Wills included with this issue are both from this prominent , Yorkshire Quaker family. There were some 16th and 17th Yorkshire Wills from the Baldersby area of Yorkshire that were unfortunately not available in Salt Lake City and I was not able to acquire copies.

In researching for the article on Isabella Ormston Ford and her Leeds Yorkshire, Whitelock ancestors for this issue, I came across two books connected to this part of the family. Both were about prominent Quakers. One was a present from Isaac Whitelock to his wife Hannah Whitelock Mar.5,1774 (R3962). The other was an auction item for a book that once belonged to Isaac Whitelock (1712-1781) of Lancaster, Pennsylvania in which were written the birth dates of Isaac and his wife and ten of their thirteen children and included a note his wife had three stillborn children not named. Most of this information was not in our files and I was very pleased to uncover this detail about the WHITLOCK57 family (R3963). I could see from the sides of the image of this page there was additional information relating to this family recorded in this book, I therefore sent an email to be passed on to the purchaser but have not received a reply. I am hoping the purchaser will be willing to share this additional information with us.

Also while doing the above research I came across the extensive collection of research done by Charles Pease on descendants of Isaac Whitelock of Leeds, Yorkshire WHITLOCK57 family. This added a huge new section to this family. (X7701 & X7702)

I was very pleased to see the items posted on Facebook by Victoria House relating to the gymnastic games in Glasgow and the performance by Max Whitlock who managed a Gold Medal performance, and became the first Brit in 103 years to win a gold medal at these games. We have been following Max’s career for a couple of years but have not yet determine which family is his.

Our YDNA project continues to yield interesting results. We had two YDNA results come in last year from the Whitlock families of Wiltshire and Oxfordshire. Both these results showed Haplogroup “E” which is very rare in Britain and has origins in Spain, Morocco and Northern Africa. I heard recently from Eric Whitlock that his cousin Graham Holton has been doing research at a University in Scotland into the descendants of those who fought at the Battle of Bannockburn. This is part of the Battle of Bannockburn Family History Project run by the Genealogical Studies Postgraduate programme to mark the 700th anniversary of the battle. Several members of the Berkeley family fought in this battle and a descendent participated in the Project. Their Haplogroup was also “E”. As this family is one of the few in Britain that can trace their male line back before the Battle of Hastings in 1066 this pushed the arrival in Britain of this Haplogroup pre Norman conquest. They are now speculating that the Berkeley family may descend from a Roman Soldier with origins in Spain. Interestingly the Berkeley family still live in Berkeley Castle in Glocestershire and still own the land they were shown owning in the Domesday book in 1086. Our latest YDNA result was a 37 of 37 marker match for a descendant of John Whitlock & Agnes dela Beche who were married about 1454 - WHITLOCK02H family. We currently are awaiting results from two other tests which are expected in December.

There have been some other great additions to our collection come in recently. Jennifer Hart provided a copy of the twelve page 1785 Will of Hugh Hughes of Hoddesdon, Hertforshire and the 1848 Will of his great-nephew Hugh (Whitelock) Hughes. Hugh Hughes was the uncle of Hugh Whitelock’s mother Frances Ann Hutchins. In his Will he left his considerable estate to Hugh Whitelock on the condition he took the Hughes name and arms. This answered a more than forty year old question of why Hugh Whitelock become Hugh Hughes. (R3909 & R3910) Jennifer also found Hugh (Whitelock) Hughes’ 1848 obit in the Hertford Mercury (NP1523) and notice of the change of name from Whitelock to Hughes in the St. James Chronicle 1795 (NP1524). WHITLOCK21 family.

While not connected to the Whitlock family, my husband, Patrick acquired an original 1873 Indenture for the Shevington family of Derbyshire at a auction (R3957). We had a frame that fit it and it looks really great on the wall of my office. I only list it in case someone with connections to the Shevington family is interested in a copy.

I was very pleased to receive a copy of Katherine (Burchette) Whitlock’s 1648 Will from John Cook. This person is the grandmother of the original immigrant to Virginia, James Whitlock (1650?-1716). While James’s father Richard was Katherine’s eldest son, she leaves him a legacy of £400 to be paid out in half yearly installments of £24 each. The rest of her children receive their legacies outright. I intend to create a transcript of this Will and include it in the March 2016 issue of the Newsletter. (R3961)

Research by Robert Davis into the de la Beche family (860-1200) provided us with several lines of descent from this ancient Norman family (X7705). Galfridus de la Bec received a good portion of Hertfordshire for his services in the Battle of Hastings and it is assumed most of de la Beche families in Britain descent from him.

Rita Silva has been working on plat maps for Union Co., South Carolina (R3960) and has put together a summary of all the families living on Browns Creek (X7706). The goal is to determine how Lott Whitlock fits into the Whitlock family in Union Co. The SCLAND file detailing all the references to Whitlocks in South Caroline pre 1830 continues to grow and becoming a more useful research tool.

I came across an interesting item on the Internet regarding George Bickett Whitlock (1920-1944) who died in Belgium in WW2. His widow Byra Louise (Whittlesey) Whitlock was married in Paris in 1949 to John Hadley Nicanor Hemmingway the son of Ernest Hemingway and was the mother of Margaux & Mariel Hemmingway. WHITLOCK25 family.

Our thanks to Eric Whitlock for his great collection of clips from the Somerset newspapers of the 1860's and 1870's (NP1527-NP1541)

My thanks to everyone who sent in material this quarter. After forty-five years, our collection continues to grow. I also have another disc of research by Lawrence Otis that I have not tackled yet.

I have attached renewal notices for 2016 and a financial statement for 2015. Many thanks to everyone for the generous donations this year $1,963!! Subscriptions cover about half the costs of running the Whitlock Family Association and the rest comes from donations. We paid down the debt by $1200. I am planning a fairly major update to the website in 2016 as I have not done one for a couple of years. We had 73 subscribers this year and many who just sent donations. I hope you will all be able to continue your support for the coming year. All much appreciated. We have information, likely taken from the Quaker records, that Isaac Whitelock was born the 23rd of the 5th month 1667 (prior to 1752 July was the 5th month so July 23, 1667). We suspect he was likely born in Ripon, Yorkshire but have not been able to confirm this. He was the son of William Whitelock and Dorothy Rhodes who were married at Hartwith,Yorkshire Sep.30,1660. Hartwith is roughly in the middle between and Ripon and just near Bishops Thornton.

By 1714 Isaac Whitelock is in Leeds and purchases from the widow Mary Pycock an oil drawing business.. Over the next twenty-five years Isaac expands the business and adds milling and other ventures to the point when he dies in 1737 the business is substantial and he is a fairly wealthy man. The family were Quakers and lived with and intermarried with the other early Quaker families. He married Sarah Wall Mar.1,1705 at Skipton, Yorkshire and they had at least 5 children. His youngest son Isaac Whitelock born Feb.9,1712 Skipton? Yorkshire emigrated to America about 1740 and died in Wilmington, Delaware in 1781-4. The only child mentioned in Isaac Whitelock Sr.s Will is his son William to whom he leaves the amount of 21 shillings. The rest of his fairly substantial estate goes to his wife Sarah.

Two years later in 1739 Sarah makes her Will and leaves her son William the business and all the real estate the family owns in the Leeds area. William is responsible to pay her debts and funeral costs as well as the legacies Sarah leaves his sisters that are to be paid from these properties. Sarah provides that if William does not pay his sisters within one month of her decease that they are entitled to collect the rents from these properties until their legacies plus interest are paid. Sarah leaves nothing in her Will to her youngest son Isaac Whitelock and his “Certificate of Removal” from the Brighouse Quaker Meeting House in Leeds is dated Feb.18,1740 showing he is is going to Pennsylvania. Isaac may have received a portion of his father’s wealth as he appears to have arrived in America with enough capital to establish a brewery and tanning business within a couple of years. In 1760 Sarah makes a codicil to her 1739 Will leaving the house she lives in to her three daughters Mary, Sarah & Deborah instead of her son William. Sarah’s Will is proved Feb.10,1761.

Whitlock Family Newsletter Vol.34 No.4 Dec 2015 Page 4

Isaac & Sarah (Wall) Whitelock’s son William married Martha Jackson July 13,1732 at the Friends Meeting House in Warmsworth, Yorkshire. Their eight children married into many of the Quaker families, with the names Elam, Lupton, and Arthington, forging alliances that grew and expanded their business enterprises in Leeds. By the time William made his Will in 1772 his business interests were extensive.

William’s granddaughter Martha married Thomas Bensen Pease Feb.16,1814 at the Bradford Quaker Meeting House. Their children and grandchildren married into many of the most powerful families in Yorkshire. See Main Line #454 on page 16 of this issue.

Martha’s granddaughter was Isabella Ormston Ford (1855-1924) one of the most influential writers who led the movement to educate the public on the need for women to be able to earn a living wage.

The family remained Quaker well into the 1900's.

Whitlock, Sydney Australia, 1925 from Steve Redding ISABELLA ORMSTON FORD (1855-1924) by: Dr.Amanda Wilkinson Isabella Ormston Ford was born on the 23rd May 1855. She was the youngest of eight children. Her parents, Robert and Hannah, were Quakers and the young Isabella was brought up in a family greatly concerned with women’s rights and humanitarian causes, an upbringing which would affect her entire life’s work. Isabella became, arguably, one of the most important women ever to write about women’s rights, and women’s working conditions, bringing to the masses, through her pamphlets, speeches and Union actions, the true plight of working-class women, and the conditions they faced in the workplace. There are some fabulous biographies of Isabella already in circulation, including a particularly thorough examination of her life and political viewpoints by June Hannam (http://www.oxforddnb.com/view/printable/39084), so instead this article will consider what Isabella stood for, how she publicised the plight of women and their working conditions, and her solutions for what she referred to as ‘the real evil’ of indifference and ignorance as to their plight. One of the most important pamphlets written by Isabella for the Humanitarian League was Women’s Wages, and the conditions under which they are earned. (William Reeves, London, 1893). In this seventeen page pamphlet Isabella made an impassioned plea to the public to understand that the way in which women were being ‘rescued’ by the middle-class philanthropists, was causing more problems for the poor and oppressed, than the employers had in the first place. Philanthropists, she argued throughout her life, provided a sticking plaster, an ineffective temporary relief, not even a cure, when what was needed was prevention. Isabella was frustrated that the educated middle-classes showed little interest in the conditions in which women were working and the problems they were facing, choosing instead, so Isabella complained, to focus on ‘restoring life and happiness to women, a vast proportion of whom would never have required any such help if the

Whitlock Family Newsletter Vol.34 No.4 Dec 2015 Page 8 conditions of their working lives, and especially their wages, had been such as to bring even the smallest amount of happiness or comfort within their reach.’ (Women’s Wages, p.4) She railed against the accepted convention which suggested that a woman should in no way revolt, but instead should accept any injustice shown to her. To be a woman and to complain was in some way almost irreligious, a woman should accept her lot, no matter how bad. Isabella despaired at the ineffectiveness of any help given – it being focussed on ‘rescuing’ individual women, thus benefiting the helper, making him appear a kind and benevolent being, and the woman helped (temporarily), but not on understanding and solving the problems which women were faced with in their working lives and uncovering why these women, in their droves, chose to enter low paid occupations in terrible conditions. Firstly, in Women’s Wages, Isabella brought to the forefront the issue of wages paid to women and she went into great detail, examining the wages of women in occupations spread across the country, showing how they were paid a wage so low that they could not afford to pay their rent and eat, let alone have any small pleasures in their lives. She forced the reading public to understand that women were being forced to work from early in the morning to late at night, every day, with only an hour break, if they were lucky and not ‘locked in’ by their employer. She linked the nature of their work, (unskilled) to their wages, pointing out that the brain requires food to work and to develop skills (which would lead to an increase in wages), but the wages being paid were insufficient to provide enough food for the women to use their brains, thus creating a vicious circle. We now, may see this as rather simplistic and not biologically correct – however, Isabella was able to show that women’s health, and their mental wellbeing was being damaged by the poverty they were forced to endure. Conversely, she was able to show that where a woman was intelligent; where she was able to find a way to increase her output, an employer would reduce her wages, and also that of her peers in many instances, thus increasing his profit. Even where women were able to work enough hours to make a living wage, Isabella showed that they rarely received it in full – the system of fines for poor work (rarely proved), and enforced idleness where a girl was ‘locked in’ when there was apparently no work available but she was kept in the factory and prevented from working without pay, meant that women were regularly paid far less than the wage books would show. Isabella argued that the systems in place in many factories and sweat shops led to the women suffering not only monetarily, but also, she suggested, morally and emotionally – Isabella was one of the first feminists to bring to the forefront the issue of what we now know as ‘the casting couch’. She explained how, ‘women who will submit or respond to his coarse jokes and language and evil behaviour, receive more work than the woman who feels and shows herself insulted by such conduct.’ (p13) Isabella asserted that none of these issues were acknowledged or remedied by the philanthropist approach. Women needed to take action themselves, to understand that ‘salvation’ came from within and not without. Legislation, she insisted, was only part of the solution – the real force for change would come from women and from teaching women that they should not conform to the ‘little woman’ beliefs of contemporary thought, but from teaching girls to rebel and not to submit. ‘We must arouse them to a better knowledge of their own worth, their own infinite value. We must stir within them a discontent which will make them loathe their surroundings, and make them insist on obtaining happiness and rest. We must show them it is one of the most selfish crimes to submit to injustice, since each of these submissions adds a link to the chain of slavery fettering all working women, not in England only, but all over the world.’(p. 15) She despaired at the problems facing women, at the difficulty of understanding your own self worth in a world where women were ‘not recognised as citizens (except as regards penalties), forever classed with “lunatics, imbeciles and paupers”’.(p.16) Isabella was able to show that for women to obtain any degree of equality in their wages (a cause for which she was a firm supporter), then women had to be acknowledged as being good and intelligent and that the powers that be had to understand that they were every bit as worthy as men, intellectually and physically. She was also convinced that until the philanthropists could understand that their methods were ‘unscientific and superficial’ then nothing could change. Isabella truly believed, however, ‘that a better day is dawning’, and that the movements she was seeing in the burgeoning women’s trade union movements (she was President at this time of the Leeds Tailoresses’ Union), and the increasing interest in the suffrage movement convinced her that if only women themselves could understand their self-worth and their inherent strength, then change must surely follow. A pacifist until the end of her life, she was never a fanatic, never took part in the more radical activities of her peers, preferring to work, and work hard, even in her later life when ill health affected her ability to travel, to protect the weak, and to encourage self development and

She was a woman who fought hard, her entire life, for the causes of socialism and feminism, but unlike many of the other leading ladies of the feminist and suffrage movements has been all but forgotten by history. Let’s leave the last word to Isabella, a statement which seems to sum up her life’s work: “Freedom is what women cry for, not philanthropy” Dr Amanda Wilkinson, graduated with a PhD in 2012 from the University of Essex; her thesis examined Women and Occupations in the Victorian Censuses: 1851-1901. She is a teacher specialising in British history and research officer, and also the Deputy Director of Admissions for the Dept of History at Essex. Her main research interests include women’s occupations in the nineteenth century, and the ways in which the state chose to record the economic contribution of women. ----- Isabella Ormston Ford was the daughter of Robert Lawson Ford and his wife Hannah Pease and grandaughter of Thomas Bensen Pease and his wife Martha Whitelock. WILLIAM KYLE WHITLOCK (1928-2015) One of the emails waiting for me when I returned from holidays this Fall was from Robert Whitlock, Bill’s son advising that his father had died April 10, 2015 in Pennsylvania. Bill was a long time supporter of the Whitlock Family Association and our correspondence goes back to 1992.

Part of the Whitlocks of New Jersey (W16) with origins in Wiltshire, England, Bill was very proud of his descent from Thomas Whitlock (1623?-1703) who built the first house in New Jersey in 1654, on the property in Monmouth County overlooking New York City that became The Spy House. This was a long time ago at the very beginnings of America, the British Monarchy had been swept away, Cromwell was Protector and Lord Whitlock was Keeper of the Great Seal and Ambassador to Sweden. It was a dangerous and uncertain time and many Baptists such as Thomas were heading to America to start a new life.

Bill was particular displeased with the decision to remove the name Whitlock from this historical site when it was discovered that the building was likely not older than 1720 so did not include any of the original structure build by Thomas Whitlock. Bill argued that the Whitlock family’s contribution to New Jersey’s history was no less significant as he was the first to build at that location. Bill was not successful but we appreciated his efforts. We will miss his energy and enthusiasm for all things Whitlock.

Robert has his fathers collection of research and is interested in carrying on the legacy his father left his family.
