Pastor’s Column: Corpus Christi and The of Corpus Christi The of the Body and was celebrated for the &rst time in France in 1247 at the insistence of a nun, Juliana of Mont-Cornillon. In a vision she had received in 1208, the Lord expressed his desire to have an annual feast in honor of the . Archdeacon James Pantaleon of the of Liege was favorable to this request, and he later became Urban IV in 1261. In 1264, Urban IV established a new solemnity to be celebrated in honor of the Blessed Sacrament on the Thursday after the of . (Note that the bishops of the "And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all things to myself." –John 12:32 have transferred the observance of this feast to the following Sunday, today, to accommodate The Blessed Sacrament the faithful and clergy.) This was the &rst time that a The feast of Corpus Christi is one time when our Lord in the Blessed pope had used his authority to mandate a new feast Sacrament is exposed not just to faithful Catholics but to all the world. on the whole Western Church. It was felt that the This is a time when Catholics can show their love for Christ in the Real continued on page 3 Presence by honoring Him in a very public way. In general, adoration of the Blessed Sacrament occurs both during the celebration of and outside of Mass. Without a doubt, the liturgy of the Mass is the greatest act of worship we oHer Our Lord here on earth. This celebration expresses the fullness of our faith and gives us a foretaste of heaven’s glory. During our time outside of Mass, we continually move our hearts and minds in prayer to Our Lord. Adoration of the Most Holy outside of Mass helps us focus our prayers on Jesus Christ, who is the Blessed Sacrament. Through Adoration we are able to ful&ll the words of our Lord, “Indeed this is the will of My heavenly Father, that everyone who looks upon the Son, and believes in Him, shall have eternal life. Him I will raise up on the last day.”(John 6:40) We are grateful for the many adorers who signed up to spend an hour with God. The hours listed on page 5 each week in the bulletin have openings. Sacred Heart Enthronement During the Year of Mercy, a pastoral e&ort was launched here at Church of the Magdalen to promote prayer in the homes and among the families of our parish through the celebration of the Enthronement of the Sacred Heart. To achieve our Holy Father’s dream of the practice of mercy, especially among family members, the practice of frequent (if not daily) prayer is necessary. Praying together as a family a&ords great protection against all that is going on in the world threatening the peace and tranquility of family life. The Enthronement of an image of the Sacred Heart prominently in the home manifests the family’s desire to have Christ rule the hearts and minds of the members of the family or household, providing an extension of the protection we receive in our participation in Mass and frequent reception of Holy Communion. Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus reminds us that God loves us with a human heart, and we are given the model of how to ful3ll our obligations to one another in Christian charity. If you are seeking to have your home consecrated to the Sacred Heart, bring your image to have it blessed during Mass on the 4th Sunday of month during the Prayer of the Faithful. If you have questions, contact Stephen Stewart at 573-9576 or visit the Enthronement table in the gathering space on the 4th Sunday each month.
