INTRODUCTION

Welcome to the 2015 Hardy Plant Society of Oregon Open Gardens Directory. In it you will find over 100 listings for a wealth of wonderful gardens and nurseries to visit all season. Many gardens will be open on the weekends, and evening openings are on the second and fourth Mondays of June, July, August and September.

The Directory has been prepared by a dedicated committee led by Chair Tom Barreto and including Jolly Butler, Robert Herald, Cori Bacher and Kate Bryant. Tom is also much appreciated for his beautiful photography which graces the cover each year. Special thanks to Linda Wisner for cover design, advice and production direction. We would like to thank HPSO staff members Cheryl Kleinsmith and Lisa Fuller for their assistance. And thank you to Bruce Wakefield for his help with a process that is always time-consuming; we are very grateful.

We have worked hard to assure the accuracy of the listings in the 2015 Open Gardens Directory, but if you find an error or omission, please contact the HPSO office at 503-224-5718. Corrections will be announced in the HPSO weekly email blasts.

As always, deepest thanks to the generous and welcoming HPSO members who are opening their gardens this year. We appreciate the opportunity to learn from, and enjoy, your remarkable gardens.

1 VISITOR GUIDELINES TO GOOD GARDEN ETIQUETTE

We are fortunate to be able to visit so many glorious gardens through our HPSO membership. And, since we want to keep getting invited back, here are a few reminders about how to be the very best garden visitor ever.

1. Ask the garden owner before taking photos. Almost everyone will say yes. Ask separately about the use of tripods. 2. Stay on footpaths, stairways and bridges. This will ensure that you are not compromising beds, slopes, or waterways, and that you will keep your footing. 3. Leave plant tags in the ground or the pot where the plant is located. Ask your host to identify plants if you cannot read the tags in place. 4. If you do ask the name of a plant, make sure you have a notebook and pencil at the ready to record it. You may think you will remember, but you won’t; none of us remembers. 5. If there are other visitors during your tour, make sure everyone has access to the host to ask questions. 6. Refrain from removing any plants (even weeds) or parts of plants. 7. If the house is not open, please do not ask to use the bathroom/phone/internet unless it is a dire emergency. 8. Have a wonderful time.

If I were to give my garden a name, it would be "Barbara's Playground." It's my favorite place to spend time in every day. There I plant, prune, and putter, always trying out new varieties of flowering perennials and shrubs, and dream up different ways to combine them with each other. Nearly 30 years old, the garden sits on an acre that feels bigger, thanks to the borrowed landscape beyond. Features include island beds, mixed borders, container plantings, a collection of dwarf conifers and dwarf ginkgoes, a redwood , grape arbor and an eagle stone framed by a pergola. Wheelchair accessibility: None Directions: Hwy 26 west to Sylvan exit. Turn left at exit, crossing back over freeway and stay to the right, descending on Scholls Ferry Rd. The quest for less work and more play continues as I progress further into life's "Golden Years." Mine is a mostly shady garden with scattered sunny spots. Wide flat paths with seating along the way are lined with packed gravel and are easily accessible. Many new dwarf conifers, shrubs, ferns and woodland plants have been added since last open in 2013. Garden labels identify plantings. Several varieties of Trillium bloom in March/April. Hostas, ferns, 'Bartzella' peony, clematis, epimediums are best in May, but

We pack a lot into our small urban space. Borders of shrub roses and drought-tolerant plants lead the way in, while a small mixed border lines 27 the driveway. The grass is now all gone, a small pathway replacing it in front and hardscape in the rear. In the back, a copper fence and glass art lead to a patio, the first of several rooms. Separated by a row of potted shrubs and bonsai, the next room is bordered by blueberries and grapes and includes a small pond and, increasingly, an Asian feel. At the rear is a shade garden under apricot and apple trees, evolving from cottage-wild to a more Chinese garden/controlled look. A raised vegetable bed and a small greenhouse complete the area. This is a small-scale garden, but with many surprises. Wheelchair accessibility: Some, or a small part, of the garden is accessible to wheelchairs. Directions: SE Powell (Hwy 26) from east or west to SE 52nd Ave. South on 52nd, two blocks past Foster to Center St. Left (east) on Center to the end of the block. House with plants!

Our two-acre garden was a slope of invasive weeds when we purchased the property in 2000. After living with all the scotch broom, ivy and vinca, we decided it was time for a MAJOR backyard remodel in 2003. Landscape architect Michael Schultz created a beautiful design that pulled the house and the garden together, taming the slope with a number of terraces for entertaining and a much better connection to the garden. Mature evergreen trees, 50-year-old rhododendrons, an eight-bed raised vegetable garden and plenty of year-round color make up this collector's garden. The best time to visit the garden is in May, June or July. The house just went through a COMPLETE remodel that was finished in March, 2015. Please wear comfortable shoes. Wheelchair accessibility: None

Rosemound Farm in Scholls welcomes friends to a lovely rural landscape and featured formal strolling garden. The restored Georgian manor house was designed by Herman Brookman and completed in 1936. The gardens were first started by the Groners in the mid-1800s after their arrival to the Chehalem Valley via the Oregon Trail. The gardens are designed for strolling, and feature many flowering trees, shrubs, and perennials, including many plants commonly found in our northwest climate and others that are rare finds. Organic horticultural practices are utilized onsite. Special features are a magnificent Fagus sylvatica 'Tricolor', an old growth Calocedrus decurrens, viburnums, lilacs, crabapples, perennials of all themes, a bocce court, truffiere, greenhouse, vegetable garden and filbert orchard. Come share my garden. I live in the Bridlemile neighborhood on a sunny hillside. The major garden hardscape was designed by Ed Ceccacci in 1996. I have worked with Gavin Younie, Outdoor Scenery Design, for the past eight years to refine and expand the original design. The garden meanders on a quarter acre through a formal boxwood garden with a , a contemplation shade garden, a dahlia garden and a colorful entertainment patio through which hummingbirds zoom. In the back is a long allee garden with shade lovers on one side and sun lovers on the other. I love zonal denial succulents and other unusual plants. I am hoping that a new fountain will be installed in the Charleston garden in the back by our Open Garden date. Christopher, Barbara Private garden Petals & Stems Monday: 8-Jun, 5-8 3415 NE 18th Ave Portland, OR 97212 503-740-5216

Moving out of the shadow of Forest Park eight years ago, I found a rare, sunny, tree-less lot in Irvington. Five months later, the scraggly grass, puny rhodies and an ailing photinia had a close encounter of the bulldozer kind. 33 David Mason (formerly Hedgerows Nursery) helped me make a plan for the sloped front yard, to include a rock garden, a dry creek and a small bridge. Those first months, I planted lots of rocks and boulders, but all those sun-loving plants I could never have before soon followed. The next summer the parking strip became a garden, and the following year I sold the lawn mower and plants started filling the back yard, as well. Ironically, now I missed the shade plants I left behind, so a woodland garden has emerged under the borrowed shade of my neighbor's birch trees. Now plants have spread into a container garden in the driveway with a pergola and patio at the back. This year's project - night lighting. I look forward to sharing the garden again this summer. Wheelchair accessibility: Most of the garden is accessible to wheelchairs. Coleman, Carolyn Private garden Heartwood 25-Apr, 10-4, 26-Apr, 12-4 PO Box 155 Marylhurst, OR 97036 503-635-5991

Heartwood is a woodland garden on the Marylhurst campus. Tall firs reach up to the sky, giving the feel of a grand cathedral. This is the mood that I build on: contemplative, with a sense of place and history. Seventeen years ago this woods was a jungle of blackberries and ivy. All that had to be cleared out before I could design and build a garden. I have done most of this by myself as I have no "staff" and a skimpy budget, to boot. The garden grew as I managed to acquire plants. Heartwood is too shady for many flowers except in spring, so my focus has been on foliage: color, shape and size to make vignettes painted with plants. While you are at Marylhurst, you might also enjoy seeing my other garden, Heartwood Park, on Holy Names Dr. Ask for directions. Wheelchair accessibility: Some, or a small part, of the garden is accessible to wheelchairs. Directions: From the north: go to downtown Lake Oswego to State St, Hwy 43. Follow Hwy 43 south, cross the Oswego Creek Bridge and continue about a mile to the 1st traffic light. Turn left onto Holy Names Dr. From I- 205 S: take the Lake Oswego exits that get you onto Hwy 43. Go about 3 miles until you reach Marylhurst University. DO NOT TURN THERE! Proceed to the next light and turn right. After turning onto Holy Names Dr, watch for the signs to Heartwood. Turn left into the driveway. Please be extra careful, this is a blind driveway! Heartwood is just past the little green house. Parking will be marked. Please do not park on the grass or block the road.

Our desire to stay in Oregon City led to a perhaps foolish decision to buy 1- 1/2 acres of rock left behind by the Missoula floods. The property nestles at the base of a basalt bluff surrounded by big-leaf maple and Douglas fir. Creating a garden is such difficult terrain became my life's adventure. Today gravel paths, cozy seating areas, metal art, mixed borders, Ben Dye's steel fence, beautiful stone work and a sense of humor have transformed the dramatic setting into a peaceful garden. I enjoy it when visitors take the time to sit a while and soak up the ancient and peaceful energy of this garden. Bring a cup of coffee and enjoy homemade biscotti. Appointments welcomed. Wheelchair accessibility: None Directions: Take 99E south through Oregon City, under the tunnel and emerge alongside the Willamette River. Turn left at S 2nd Street signal across from the falls. Stay on S 2nd to the "T" at S Center St. At the rock wall, turn right onto S Center St, whch is very steep and windy. Do not look for address as we do not exist on S Center St. Look for a sign that says "ROCKS" with our address listed above. Turn left down private drive. Garden is at the end of the private drive. Look for Open Gardens signs.

My garden, organic since I started 15 years ago, is on a 75 x 100 city lot. I'm not a planner so plants came home, beds got increased, lawn disappeared until I thought it was set. But things have been changing a lot in the last couple years. One bed got totally cleared and redone. Two larger trees died and a few are growing large enough to change the light near them. I've added several trees over the years including a Trochodendron, Cornus controversa 'Variegata', Acer griseum, Acer pseudoplatanus 'Esk Sunset ', Betula 'Royal Frost' and Davidia involucrata ' Sonoma'. My front, south-facing garden is terraced for privacy and in bloom most of the year with a large variety of plants. The back is a private space to relax in the light shade with garden art. Evergreens and foliage color/texture are the focus. But it seems that many Epimedium, Podophyllum, Disporum, hellebores, Tricyrtis, etc., have followed me home too. You are invited to sit and enjoy. Also open directly across the street are the Lewis and Evans gardens. Wheelchair accessibility: Most of the garden is accessible to wheelchairs. Excerpted from The Garden Conservancy's 2005 Open Days Directory: "This Michael Schultz-designed garden encompassing 1-1/2 acres is six years old. The transition from an excess of rolling green lawn to the present setting of "colorful rooms" containing many different perennials, flowering trees and ornamental grasses has been tedious, but certainly enjoyable. Add a few arbors, three water features, interesting hardscapes, plus a mix of tropicals, and the visitor should leave my garden with a sense of tranquility and an appreciation for the beauty Portland's climate can 39 nurture." That was nine years ago and much has changed! True to Michael's original plan, the woodland has been completed and a succulent bed enters its fifth summer season. I invite all of you to come share in the beauty of summer days in Cedar Mill. Wheelchair accessibility: Most of the garden is accessible to wheelchairs. This quarter-acre garden is 8 years old. After removal of several invasive plant species, we installed extensive new beds, gravel paths and a potager kitchen garden. Planting emphasis focuses on cold-hardy Mediterranean plants and prairie perennials in a naturalistic style. The back slope (formerly covered in blackberries and thistle) is now a tapestry of perennials and grasses. Perennial species throughout the garden range from Echinacea to Verbascum and hardy geraniums. Ornamental grasses include Sesleria autumnalis, Muhlenbergia rigens, Stipa gigantea, Miscanthus, Calamagrostis and Pennisetum; shrubs include Arctostaphylos, Bupleurum fruticosum and Rhamnus. Pots are full of succulents and spikey plants. The lawn area was reduced and replaced with a drought-tolerant blend of fescues that requires little to no mowing. There is also outside living on the front terrace behind a modern slat fence and on the back patio with a re-purposed prison bed. Wheelchair accessibility: None Directions: West on Hwy 26, take exit 71A and follow signs to Canyon Rd. At the second stop light, make a right onto Canyon Ln. This is a sculptor's garden. There's been a lot of change since the garden was last open in 2012. Sculpture and by Patrick Gracewood are integrated into garden rooms. Architectural terra cotta acanthus leaves are near the living plant, in a dialogue between art and nature that has been going on for over 2,500 years. Siting sculpture in the garden creates relationships of movement, ideas and experience. Art you see on the way into the garden is different from that you see on the same path, exiting. The sculpture studio will be open, too. Come and see what's new. Wheelchair accessibility: Some, or a small part, of the garden is accessible for wheelchairs. My garden is a strolling garden, but is is also a garden to be enjoyed from several benches. The covered Japanese bench has a large stand of black bamboo beside it. Hellebores are in the shady area with ferns. My garden was in the December 2011 issue of the HPSO Bulletin, and I was pleased that Dulcy Mahar visited my garden in 1995. I love to talk and to show my garden to experienced gardeners and beginners alike. A new house was built next door this year, blocking sunlight, which has completely altered my plantings on the south side of my garden. Wheelchair accessibility: Most of the garden is accessible to wheelchairs. Directions: Cross the Morrison Bridge from downtown, go east to Sandy Blvd. Take Sandy Blvd to NE 57th, then turn left. Continue on to NE Prescott and turn left. At NE 56th, turn left again. Look for the brown house on the right side of the street in the middle of the block.

Rustic structures and garden art punctuate this multi-level garden. A splashing stream tumbles downhill through the center. Tied together by meandering paths, the garden is primarily a woodland garden. There are many varieties of evergreen and deciduous trees and shrubs. I've been a gardener since childhood and a potter in Portland for 40 years, so the garden reflects both my plant enthusiasms over the years and my

51 impulse to make ceramic hardscape. I describe the effect as "cottage Byzantine." The front garden is organized around a koi pond with a broad tile edge and basin. Overlooking the pond is a pergola with a tile floor: a copy of the "Rhinoceros of Venice" mosaic. In the back a dwarf blue Atlas cedar 'Horstmann' (like most of my interesting plants, from Don Howse) is skirted by native flowers, a small bog and a ceramic knot garden. There are a good-sized vegetable garden, a with an eco-roof and chickens. Wheelchair accessibility: None Directions: In the Sunnyside neighborhood between Belmont and Hawthorne. Eight steps from the street to the garden.

In 2005, Lilyvilla Garden began as a Pan-Asian/Tropical garden. By 2010 light conditions had changed and horticultural experimentation had taken its aesthetic toll on the garden. It was time for ruthless editing! After removing most of the non-structual plants, I began anew with a simpler plant palette arranged in patterns that remind me of the tropical gardens I've studied. A large, wooden arbor and custom steel gate invite visitors into the garden. Crunchy gravel pathways with slabs of tumbled bluestone act to slow down the visitor. Chinese banana (Musa basjoo) create entry and separation into a gravel seating area while a trickling stone water feature leads to the main patio which features Lilyvilla-designed outdoor furniture. Wheelchair accessibility: None Directions: From downtown take Broadway Bridge to the east side of river. Turn left onto N Williams Ave. Turn right onto NE Monroe St. Destination will be on the left. Front garden under construction. Back garden accessible from driveway up concrete steps. Once in the garden, elevation remains the same.

I've never been good at moderation. I admit it. But when it comes to my garden, I'm completely out of control. Somehow there are always new plants, new ideas, new joy. A few years ago I started planting along our 750-foot driveway; it now sports over 100 trees and shrubs. In the last couple of years I've created two new conifer gardens in the pasture and this year have two more planned nearby. The collections continue to multiply -- succulents and agaves, maples, hostas, hydrangeas, species rhododendrons, conifers -- and the garden ornaments proliferate without my even trying: mossy old concrete pots, benches, finials, urns, fountains, bird baths, balls, pedestals, and statuary, iron sculptures, wrought-iron gates, a bronze goat-head urn, antique Mexican gargoyles.... what's next? It's an addiction. Wheelchair accessibility: Some, or a small part, of the garden is accessible to wheelchairs. Directions: South on I-205, take Exit 10 (Oregon City/Molalla) heading south on Hwy 213. Three miles up the hill, turn left onto Beavercreek Rd (first stoplight at top of hill). After 7.5 miles, make a soft left onto S Upper Highland Rd (do not take S Lower Highland). 19501 is 1.7 miles after you turn. There's plenty of pasture parking, the garden is partially wheelchair accessible and picnicking is welcome. We're just 35 minutes from downtown. While you're in the area, be sure to visit the beautiful Hilderbrand garden which will be open the same days. And if you find yourself in the throes of irresistible plant lust, Wild Ginger Farm is just down the road.

The "Hardiman Horticultural Haven" surrounds a Victorian duplex and a Craftsman four-plex. The garden features strong geometric lines and asymmetrical spaces that echo the scale and mass of the buildings. Mixed

53 borders in the cloistered back garden display a wide variety of plants. The sudden demise of a large tree mandated redesigning a large part of the back garden. A new structure, Victorian/Gothic/Craftsman in style, and a new terrace are part of the re-do. The wall garden was designed to be viewed by passersby on the street and sidewalk, framing the Victorian house and defining the relationship of the house to the streetscape. Mediterranean gravel gardens along the street showcase a palette of drought-tolerant plants and "flying carpet" mosaics. Wheelchair accessibility: None Directions: Travel east across the Hawthorne Bridge, following SE Hawthorne to SE 18th. Turn left (north) on SE 18th and proceed two blocks to SE Main St. The garden surrounds a Victorian home on the corner of SE 18th and SE Main.

We are particularly interested in woodland, Japanese and Mediterranean plants and have a collection of many species of hardy terrestrial orchids, erythronium, cyclamen, iris, lily, peony, trillium, epimedium, hardy aroids, and ferns. These dates should coincide with the bloom time of large swathes of five forms of Dactylorhiza orchids, other terrestrial orchids, species peony and iris. Rare plants available for sale include Trillium kurabayashii, at least six forms of terrestrial orchids, Woodwardia, Blechnum, various species peony, and assorted aroids/arisaema. We will also be selling plants such as winter aconite, broad-leaved galanthus, and small leaf gunnera. Plus, we will be selling some of our teak furniture, benches, pots and vintage garden tools. Our garden is the combined efforts of two confirmed rock addicts and plant lovers. During the past 18 years we have transformed over four acres of former sheep pasture into a variety of garden areas accessed by meandering gravel and stone pathways. Trellises, arbors and hedges add structure and help to define the spaces. Dry-stacked walls of native stone terrace the hillsides, and numerous rockeries provide niches for alpines, 63 natives, heathers and dwarf conifers. Two hillside gardens feature drought-tolerant plants. A large water feature includes three ponds connected by a meandering stream, which you can cross via Ron's stone arch bridge. We have benefited from opening our garden and enjoying fellowship with HPSO members for the past five years as they appraise and appreciate, advise and admire our endeavors. This will be my last HPSO open garden because I plan to sell my home and move to Rose Villa Senior Living soon. During my years in this house, I have enjoyed working in the garden and strived to make it a four-season garden with varying colors and textures throughout the year. Now, I'm ready to seriously listen to my physical self and give up the garden I love in order to make the transition to the next phase of my life. I will still be surrounded by beautiful gardens, but others will be making the plants happy. Most of my garden tools and books will be on sale both days of my open garden. Change is under way as two key trees no longer grace, or in one case, disgrace, the garden. As a result, I am re-working significant aspects of both the front and rear gardens and opening by appointment only. What is unchanged is the garden's mix of strong foliar structure and plenty of pretty flowers. Hardscaping and water features are simple, and gravel is used extensively. A separate vegetable garden featuring raised beds and potted fruit trees is wheelchair accessible, but the front and upper rear gardens require navigating steps. Wheelchair accessibility: Some, or a small part, of the garden is accessible to wheelchairs. Directions: Take Interstate 5 south from downtown through "The Curves" to Multnomah Blvd. Exit and proceed to the second signal, SW 35th Avenue. Turn right and continue .5 mile. For the past 45 years, I have enjoyed our half-acre garden (in a grove of mature fir/cedar trees) that surrounds our 1950 ranch house in Cedar Hills. Over the years, I have removed many trees and shrubs but added magnolias, viburnums, stewartias, cornus, clematis and hydrangeas plus numerous perennials, and grasses to the already extensive native shade plantings. There is a large black bamboo grove that has become a major feature. The front garden includes new areas under development after the loss of a large European birch to disease and the removal of a 150-foot Douglas fir after a lightning strike in April ’03. An extensive bulb planting is now where the birch had been. The back garden includes a covered potting bench and storage areas as well as a play corner for our grandchildren. Don’t forget to look for the bluebell pasture I planted across the street on state land. Directions: Take Hwy 26 approximately 5 miles west of downtown Portland to Cedar Hills Blvd exit. Turn left at the light and go south on Cedar Hills Blvd, under Hwy 26. Turn left at the stop light onto SW Butner Rd. Continue

The structure of this one-acre English-style country garden was established 50 years ago on the grounds of the historic Hurlburt School. In spring, the focus is on the shrubbery and bulb garden, in summer, on the large yew- framed perennial border. Additional sun and shade gardens surround the house. My focus is on the creation of restful spaces and plant combinations that will live and thrive in this tricky microclimate. We have a large organic kitchen garden with vegetables, asparagus, fruit trees, berries, grapes, and kiwi. Our garden shed and duck yard/house are also of interest. We are only five miles from Vista House and the Gorge waterfall area. David's art studio will also be open. Wheelchair accessibility: Most of the garden is accessible to wheelchairs. Directions: Take I-84 east to exit 22. Take the exit, turn right, follow the road uphill for 2 miles. Go right at the"Y". At the Historic Columbia River Hwy, jog slightly to the right, then turn left immediately onto Evans Rd. Follow Evans for 2 miles - we are the last driveway on the right before the flashing light. Good things come in small packages; change is good for the "soil." These are quotes I often heard from my Dad who loved to garden. And I find myself thinking of them when I think of my own garden. It is small and ever-changing, calming and relaxing, but most of all it makes me happy; it is a good thing. It is a garden we enjoy living in whether simply wandering through the garden, visiting with friends in the family room by the pond, in the more formal dining room area or having a fireside chat after dinner. There is always change as the sun and shade patterns evolve (I'm actually able to finally add some sun lovers and my husband has a raised bed veggie garden grown with his own quirky twists!), but shade lovers including hellebores, hostas and ferns predominate. When a tree fell on one of the gardening during the last storm, coupled with the difficult decision to no longer raise chickens, a whole new area opened up. While we miss the girls and their wonderful eggs, we have a new area to play with. What to do?! Hopefully, we'll decide by open garden time. Come see! Nearby and open the same day are the Clark and Borcherding gardens. Wheelchair accessibility: Most of the garden is accessible to wheelchairs.

This garden, drenched in sun, views a 200-year-old Oregon white oak on the bluff of the Overlook neighborhood. Step back into history and into the country when visiting Creekside Cottage Garden. The cottage framed by the garden was built in 1930 and, although just minutes off I-5, it is located on a large lot with a creek and beautiful large trees. With sunny, partly-sunny and shady areas, the garden is situated on 3/4 of an acre on Carter Creek. Growing in it are 50+ clematis and all their friends, including roses, hardy geraniums, irises of many types, and lots and lots of lilies. In June, the clematis, early perennials and lilies are the stars. In August, the clematis, dahlias, asters are in bloom and the annual cutting garden is full of cosmos, zinnias, annual baby's breath and nicotianas. Two raised veggie beds, peas and bean trellises and blueberries round out this garden's usefulness and charm. Wheelchair accessibility: Most of the garden is accessible to wheelchairs. Directions: Take I-5 south to Exit 291/Carman Dr. Go east to Lake Oswego on Carman Dr for 1 mile, turn left at the flashing red light onto Bonita Rd. 5665 is a "flag" lot, so park up on the street (plenty of room on both sides), then walk down the long driveway to the cottage. CHANGES ARE STILL BEING MADE!! My gardens are on a hillside overlooking Willamette Falls. There are many planting areas that are all tied together by amazing moss-covered walls that I built out of "native" rocks. All of the gardens can be reached by winding paths or unusual steps and are in filtered shade. Included are large collections of ferns, hostas, perennials, shrubs and trees. Relax on a bench, stroll along the paths or sit at one of the . Look for my own little falls and pond. My sunny garden site has now filled in and so I moved on to opening up a whole new area. Our display garden has moved! We are retiring and moving from the Yamhill farm to SE Portland. Starting in 2015, our new Portland garden will be open. We were used to shady, rocky and sloping. Now we have flat, sunny and great soil because our garden is on an island surrounded by Johnson Creek. We have been working on it for four years and though young, the garden has grown quickly. The garden space is a long rectangle and we have divided it into beds connected by paths. We have built some small berms mostly for dwarf conifers and have a central Asian-style sitting area. Shade lovers and woodland plants are snuggled under the large firs at the back while we create more shade elsewhere. Many Japanese maples are scattered through the landscape. Our nursery has also moved and is open when the garden is on display. Bring your bird-watching binoculars to view the herons and kingfishers on the creek! Wheelchair accessibility: Some, or a small part, of the garden is accessible to wheelchairs. Directions: Take one of the bridges to the east side of the river. Take Hwy 99E (SE McLoughlin Blvd) south toward Milwaukie and exit at Johnson Creek Blvd. Go over the bridge crossing 99E and the railroad tracks continuing on Johnson Creek Blvd. You will go up a rise and come to a 3- way stop sign (a traffic light is being installed). Go left to stay on Johnson Creek Blvd. You will go through several stop signs, cross the trail and come to a traffic signal. Go straight through the signal then turn left on SE 45th Ave and immediately left again on SE Harney St. Harney is a small, undeveloped dead-end street. Cross the little bridge and we are the grey house on the corner on the other side. There is parking in front of the house and on the other side of the bridge.

Study Weekend 2015 Friday, June 26 through Sunday, June 28

In addition to a roster of noted speakers, workshops and a stellar plant sale, a central feature of Study Weekend is an extensive line-up of private gardens which are open to Study Weekend attendees only. In general, these are gardens which are seldom open at any other time, so attendance at Study Weekend is the only opportunity to view these gems. This year twenty gardens in outer NW Portland, inner SE and the SW hills are featured. Included for the first time ever is the legendary Jane Platt Garden. Go to the HPSO home page at www.hardyplantsociety.org/ for more information.

Garden Conservancy/HPSO Open Garden Tour Saturday, August 29 2015 10 AM to 4 PM

One day a year the internationally renowned Garden Conservancy and HPSO team up to present six outstanding open gardens. HPSO’s own Terry Wagner scours the greater Portland area all year to find special private gardens which are usually closed to the public. This year’s Open Day is delayed until August due to the Study Weekend schedule, but that means the focus will be on gardens with late summer/early fall interest. This is a great opportunity to glean lots of ideas for perking up your garden in the dog days of summer. Special pricing for HPSO members is $25.00 for a ticket book of six tickets. Order ticket books in advance to take advantage of this special offer. Watch the weekly email blast or go to www.hardyplantsociety.org for more details.
